In the "Stopping Watches" thread, a comment was made about why should a perfomer stop a watch.
Which got me thinking... it might be interesting to create a routine where the mentalist is a "PSI-jinx", totally unable to get anything to work properly, even though the odds are clearly in his favor. Stopping watches and causing electronic equipment to stop working would be just one effect. Which others could be performed and still be somewhat mysterious? Perhaps a reverse "Bank Night" effect where the performer tries to find the envelope containing the money, but it turns out that all the other envelopes have money (which is given away to the volunteers) and the mentalist is left with nothing. Or an "Acid Test" effect where the mentalist finds the acid right off the bat... What other routines and ideas might work for such a character?

It's funny that you bring up this idea. It reminds me of when I was channel surfing and came across Uri Geller on, I believe, the Home network here in the US. Geller was showing his house around and point to the silverware on the table. All of the handles were made out of wood because he kept ruining the silverware, very funny.

Greetings,
I may be cruel, but I envision where you do a living and dead test where one person writes the name of famous dead person, and everyone else writes their name. You use a pendulum with a skull to find the wrong slip. That person has a heart attack. You thank everyone else and embarassedly have your stage assistants haul off the corpse. Sam Haine

Reminds me of the old Steven Wright line:
"I stayed up all night playing poker with tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died."

Steven Wright is my favorite comedian. Not that anyone asked, but he is. I think you have a funny act idea going but how would one incorporate it? You couldn't make a persona out of that could you? Not something to make a living on.

Sam your idea is not only cruel but brilliant. I will keep it in the list of things to do this Halloween. But ditch the skull, to much of a cliché.
