All of the most creative imaginative juggling tricks ever thought of are on display at the IJA, or EJA annual convention's, because unlike magicians jugglers all share everything with each other for free.
The most famous story about inventing a creative imaginative juggling trick is the story of the Mills Mess a three ball trick that was invented by Steve Mills who is about my age. One day they uncovered an Egyptian tomb and the pictures on the wall were of four slave girls juggling to entertain the Pharo. Those 4,000 year old slave girls were doing the Mills Mess. There were four girls each in a different position of Steve's trick. We call the accumulated juggling knowledge standing on the shoulder of giants.

Yep, if you can get yourself to the EJC in Toulouse, France next year you'll see, meet and learn from some of the World's most creative jugglers.
If you've not done an EJC before expect between 2500 and 4500 jugglers all willing to share what they know.

Karl is a historian, and there is no comparison between reading his book, and getting down and dirty with real jugglers.
The place to learn the best juggling tricks in the world is at a juggling meeting, or juggling convention.

Herrmann Muller released a book, a few years ago, Michael Kara's biography. Filled with details pertaining to his act,.. very good. Talks about Servious Schafer's act, as well.
A real gold mine, though, still IS Roger Montadon's 'Juggler's Bulletins'. I think they're FREE, up on the net! Juggling Convention's,.. Groups,.. I tend to stray clear,... it's to easy getting sucked into the mainstream. givin' it easy, gallagher |

Mr Gallagher
After being an IJA member for over 25 years I do not agree with anything you have said. I can do about 250 three ball tricks. How many three ball tricks does this book of yours teach? The concept of learning advanced juggling from a book, is as valuable as learning to swim from a book. If a how to book is what you are looking for get "Juggling With Finesse" a great how to juggle like a pro book I read many years ago written by my friend Kit Summers. Always remember nothing comes close to hands on instructions.

Charlie Dancey's Encyclopaedia of Ball Juggling is, I think, the best "how to" book ever published on juggling with balls. Based solely on the sheer number of juggling tricks alone no other book comes close. And that's before you take into account the fact it also teaches site swap notation that opens the doors to an infinite number of pattern variations.
However, it teaches nothing with hats, gloves and other weird and wonderful object manipulations that are areas the previous mentioned books cover. I agree that hands on tuition is the best, but I also feel that there are many tricks that would've been lost forever were it not for the fact they were written down and explained. I love reading about juggling, watching juggling and practicing juggling. No one way is better. I think being open to all sources of juggling is the way forward.

When Mr. Gallagher said he needs no contact with people to advance his juggling skill I realized that he was giving the worst advise possible. Juggling is a form of entertainment, and doing it alone at home is ridiculous advise. How the hell are you going to get any applause if you are a hermit. I have been a performing juggler since 1989, and every single person who has ever asked me for a lesson got one for free because the motto of the IJA is "SHARE THE ART". Hiding in your garage to practice and never sharing your art with anyone is just wrong on so many levels.

Hey Al, I seemed to have ruffled your feathers here,..sorry 'bout that,..no intention.
I guess we just understood the original question differently,..and somehow got sidetracked. I thought we were looking for old obscure tricks here, as in "stuff already done and kind of forgot about". My mistake. Books, as a source, shouldn't be overlooked. Think about Mr. Mills. OK, it wasn't a book he 'stole' his trick from,..but pretty darn close!,..and not "learned with the boys down at the local Y". 'Juggling/Art"., be careful with this. Juggling is a mere craft; trained skill, at best. Art comes from using a skill, craft, 'form of self-discipline'; in expressing one's self. (simply put) This "self" is easily/often lost in group indevers.,..speaking from my own observations here. dangerous, dangerous, dangerous. still, give it easy,.. whatever your path may be. gallagher, "Meister"?,..let say, "Journey-man".,... |

We are all free to do our own thing, but your advise will only slow an aspiring juggler down.
At every IJA convention they have a three, and four ball open competition. At this competition prizes are awarded to those who do original tricks. That is the only place that I know of where cutting edge juggling is demonstrated, and rewarded. JUGGLING IS AN ART and if you disagree with me than you are merely a technician of the art of juggling.
