Was wondering -- with the exception of playing cards -- if there are any card alternatives to Tarot? Anything just as arcane and mystic? And not a modern day creation.

You might want to consider a Lenormand or Etteilla deck.

Deck of Shadows, though modern, look old and are a wonderful oracle.
Psycards have been around since the 1980, so maybe too modern, but, of all the decks I've used, I find this one the one that really speaks to me. http://www.psycards.com/ |

It is not my intension to flood all of the threads but I cannot hold back on this one.
If you look at the thread below on the Hedge Tarote, you will see that this is exactly my motivation behind this project. The Hedge Tarote looks at a possible origin of the tarot. Although used for performance purposes, is this explanation is actually closer to the truth than most explanations. It is radically different to the tarot in some fundamental ways, so if you are stuck with the Waite imagery, this will be of no use. However, if you want something that you can present as being authentic then you would do well to check it out....

I want to thank every one so far for their suggestions.
As I mentioned to my fellow Texan, RCP, in a private message last night - I'm looking for something that could have been used during the Dark Ages or the Renaissance, and probably heavily text based with minimal, suggestive, imagery. As I'm currently a international student in Scotland, I simply can't afford any of the beautiful products produced by Alchemy Moon or Outlaw. I may very well be on my way to creating something of my own. Please keep up with the suggestions, however. Very informative to know what's out there.

That is quite a good idea, there are ways to age things anyway.
Let you creative juices flow and create your own reading system even things like pebbles and coasters can be used just think outside the box. Regards Dr Rob |

She customized the back of a tarot deck for me to include the name of a fictional character I used in my performance, adding bit of history to the deck. Of course most performers would want to customize their deck with their own name. https://www.etsy.com/shop/tarotbyseven?ref=pr_shop_more http://www.tarotbyseven.com

You could go with a set of things designed for cleromancy/sortition/sortes ("drawing lots"), a form of divination. Some had text on them (names, poetry, etc.). The practice was mentioned in the Bible a few times, so Dark Ages magicians could probably justify their use of them by referring to those passages. Since some of them were on tablets (as opposed to bones, flat sticks, etc.), it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to put them on cards.

For more information on Roman sortes (cleromancy)
http://sortesastrampsychi.voila.net/ An ancient Greek oracle, similar to runes http://web.eecs.utk.edu/~mclennan/OM/BA/GAO.html Another route to go would be representing the cards as pages of a small unbound book upon which bibliomancy/stichomancy could be practiced. In ancient times, random lines written by Homer or Virgil were consulted, as was (eventually) the Bible. There is also rhapsodomancy, which involves poems written upon individual items, or in books. The specific use of cards for divination appears to have grown out of the introduction of playing cards, so historically they are closely tied together. |
