When you are performing you are entertaining and that is the key. Magic is the mode you use to entertain with but the focus is on entertaining. Whether you do knuckle busting card moves or simple self working tricks it really doesn't matter to the audience. Frankly I get the best reactions to the simplest card tricks which is a good thing because I'm not very good at sleight of hand. From my experience comedy is the key. If you are funny your tricks will come off that much stronger and the audience will love you.

Many of my questions of late relate to a project I am pursuing; Performing magic, one on one, for the Blind !
I have in mind a few tricks that work in their hands, but I have been struggling with the 'ta-da' factor. In researching this issue I came across this: "Psychologists say that a person's impact depends 7 percent on what is said, 38 percent on how it is said and 55 percent on body language." (Shalleck-Klein 1998) Posture and stance, facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, proximity, and appearance all communicate over half of our meaning nonverbally. So it seems many of you understand this. Question- Do spend as much time & plan/script your non-verbal material , as you do the trick and verbal patter? |
