I have been looking at so many types of bowls, and but can never seem to find the right one. Are there special bowls made specifically for the routine? Thanks in advance!

There are, but why? Try resale shops (Salvation Army, etc.)
Use a box, or a hat. Just find a container you can lift while inverted, with one hand. Give your routine meaning, and see where the patter leads the container. If you feel like spending money: http://www.rnt2.com/tricks/bowls/benson-bowls/

Get Pete Biro's book -- "Bowling With the Stars."
Pete uses a toilet plunger for a bowl. I guarantee you that I can walk into a Dollar Store or any place that sells bowls and find a bowl that will work for the routine.

I found a nice Tibetan Singing Bowl on Amazon for about $30 which is just about perfect.

I first did this with a silver plate bowl bought from a department store. Later, I found a brass bowl at a thrift store and paid maybe a buck for it. Now, I use a beat up old fedora that would otherwise be in the trash.
Do you see a pattern?

I picked up a great little turned Top Hat at this years IBM convention that was made by Evanna Evans. She has many interesting and well made chop cups and Benson bowls on her site http://knottygirlwood.com/knotty-girl-ma......ble.html

I also recommend Pete Biro' book. The Rezvani vanish alone is worth the price of the book.

I picked a plastic, Oriental-looking rice bowl for less than $5.00.

Some of the new silicon kitchen bowls are great to handle -- including a colander with tiny holes for the balls to sneak through

Pete's book is great.
Be sure to check out the RNT2 benson bowls they are very nice. One thing I like is a rice bowl with a red interior -- this can help cover the sponge ball. For me the bowl has to be heavy enough to mush down any loads or misbehaving sponge balls. I think there needs to be a foot on the bowl for pickup. |

When people ask me if I can a trick with my bowler hat I wear I do a little hat juggling or Benson bowl. I think if you want something a bit special your best looking on Ebay and op shops. But why you do this buy a few different bowls from the dollar stores. I had a friend do this and he wanted something with wegith so it needed to be old and metal. But as he used lots of over cheap bowls his critia grew. Things like no flat bottom in the bowl. a little pedalstool base on it he could pick it up buy with forked fingers. After about 3 years he saw one on Ebay he liked so he bided for it. That weekend we found tow in a second hand shop. So he ended up with 3 bowls only costing him 17 English pounds.
I don't know how this helps but I enjoyed sharing it. Take care good luck.

The bowl I use is wood. I had to buy a set of 6 for $3.00 at the thrift store. like the person mentioned above, I wanted more weight. So melted some lead, filled the indentation on the bottom, and painted it to match.

I suppose a large earthenware soup mug would work. It would have the weight to keep the balls from lifting it. Your thumb could nudge the handle, until your fingers could get under it, when lifting from the inverted position.

As part of my routines in "Camp Out" a larger enameled metal bowl could serve for a Benson type effect -- plus, a mag**t can be added anywhere to the outside of the bowl "on the fly" to add a Chopping ability. I use marshmallows instead of balls and some exciting moves are possible beyond the traditional Benson ones. For example, a gaffed ball can secretly slide form one side of the inverted bowl to the other to put both hands in play.
