My comment was sarcastic.

I think the real weakness in this effect compared to other Premonitions is that the spectator has to name the card and the performer deals.
Especially when it is possible do an effect where you put a card on the table, have the spectator think of a card, keeping its identity secret, allow them to deal through and count only 51 cards. Their thought of card is the one on the table. Much stronger,in my opinion. |

This effect is vary similar to "vanished and gone", as I mentioned earlier, even though "V&G" has 2 possible outcomes. I noticed on the Wizard Product Review performance when he takes the deck out of the box, he turns the first card over before he starts the count, it looked like the card was face down on top and then he flips it face up (and the rest of the deck is already face up). Is this a way of subliminally making the spectator think that all of the cards have normal backs? "V&G" does have normal backs, even though there is something written on on some of the backs, and the deck can "somewhat" be spread to show the backs are normal, (there are many effects that have that method of showing some backs normal by spreading a certain amount of cards and that gives the impression that ALL the backs are normal)...I wonder if this can be done with "Angel"? I was also wondering if- as in "V&G"- there is an alternate ending in which the spectator stops the dealer and says, lets say the 12th card, is the card I was thinking of and the effect seems a little messed up (because that means that in the patter on the WPR you will be "dead" in 12 years), but then the magician turns the thought of card over to reveal it is the only card in the deck that has "Angel Wings" or something like that which means "everlasting life". Nothing was mentioned on the Café about an alternate ending so I guess not. But when I first saw the ad for
"Angel", I thought it had something to do with "Angel Wings" on the back of a card. I was at Fantasma Magic in Manhattan today they did not carry it, I am still interested in buying as this may have a different set-up than "V&G" with maybe some d/f's and other things in play, and come to think of it if the d/f's are in play here then that may explain the first card on the top being turned over. |

Nattefrost,
I think you may be close to the truth! There would actually be a nice alternative way to present this without the spec revealing the name of the card. I'm sure it has probably occurred to most people. |

I watched Craig Petty's performance several times and it looks like a solid trick ( nice work, Craig ). With the right presentation, this "could" be very good.
BUT.....I don't think it comes close to Jon Allen's Rule Of Three. Once Craig said don't name the ace of spades or a red queen, it reminded me of Rule Of Three, but without the same high impact: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CytuXsCb......be&t=17s |

I picked this up because I "collect" Premonition (thank you Eddie Joseph) type effects. Yes of course there are many ways to accomplish the effect. Why I like this is that it is another way to solve the selection process of a Steve Shufton and Ben Harris effect released a couple of years ago.
This isn't an effect I would do in a "show" but, if I knew I was going somewhere that the conditions were just right, you can bet that I would take this one trick pony with me. Do it as a one off and then after, just change the subject. Sometimes it's fun to leave the spectator just a little bit uncomfortable. |

Hi Vlad,
As a collector of "Premonition" style effects, what are your favourites? And have you read William H.McCaffrey's "The Prize Winner" which Ted Lesley cited as the progenitor of all "Premonition" effects? Regards, Martin |

Triple Impact is one of my fave. Only one deck required with 3 reveal cards, can't get any better than that!

Hi Martin,
The Prize Winner is a GREAT effect. In fact William McCaffrey seems to be somewhat overlooked and he had published many fine effects. Sal Piacente's 4-5-6 Trick is soundly based on a McCaffrey effect in Greater Magic. To all: I was thinking more about the unlikelihood of a spectator spotting a dupe. It is not impossible but it is probable that it could happen. But there is an easy psychological ruse that works. I talk about fate, and that I have a unique collection (this is important) of cards that can perhaps determine a person's fate. I actually have the cards in a black velvet bag. Now some may argue that I am basically calling attention to a suspect pack of cards. But, the reverse is true. I stress that what I am going to do is not a card "trick" and that I want to try an experiment with a special collection of cards that are inside the black bag. Give it some thought . |

Hi Vlad,
Thanks for your thoughts on Mr McCaffrey. He must have been an extremely clever gentleman. However, the less said about the 4,5,6 trick the better! |

Anyway, back to the topic, is there any other ideas on how to present this effect aside from the one shown in the demo?

I like the version by Ted Lesley.
I was never in trouble and the audience had no clue, when I bring the deck into play. But the Angel Deck has already somthing... |

Thanks for all the feedback so far. I have to say that I performed it hundreds of times at conventions and usually fooled all magicians with it. So what if a duplicate shows up? Well, just imagine that - if you would have named THAT card - you would have died in ten years and if not there, then at least twenty years later?! If you feel uncomfortable, the spectator will smell that. I never was caught so far. I change the counting rythm from time to time, square up the pack etc. I would NEVER stop or slow down on a card of the same value of the named card.
What you don't see in Craig's performance is a nice subtlety that you would see when squaring up the dealt pile from time to time. You would proof that you are using a regular deck of cards. It catches all magicians, they just forget about the second at the beginning when I turned the top card. Just watch the performance of me a year ago. Btw, it was my first convention where I performed it (I am not the inventor) and she took the most difficult card to choose from (like with an ID) that is why I had to stare a second at the card case. Now it is flawless. I would not hand out the deck to a spectator to let him deal. But why should I? Do I need to let them deal? Does it make it any better? Seemingly another creator announces his deck to be freely handled by the spectator. A statement that gives me an uncomfortable feeling, as I don't want to "lie to my customers", as the old magic dealers always did. Emphasize certain points that would not hold against reality, and you would be disappointed once you receive the deck. For the others who suggest a different method to achieve the same effect: certainly there are always several possibilities to achieve a certain effect. How good is your double deal? Would you manage to do it flawlessly so that your spectator does not recognize the change in the rhythm? I don't want to sweat my pants when dealing a deck of cards, trying to hide a certain card when I can achieve the same with a trick deck. How many of you DO a memorized deck? You could even carry around 2 decks with you and take the one out that you need AFTER they named the card. Bad for pocket management and weakening the effect. So having this deck with you that works foolproof and where you can completely rely on your presentation, that is what makes a Card-Shark product a Card-Shark product.

Good effect, but am I the only one thinks this is a terrible, terrible presentation for a trick?
"When we find your card this will tell us how long you have left to live". Really?!? Perform this for the wrong person and this could effect them in a bad way.
