I'm looking to get back into clowning, as I used to do it when I was younger. Now that I'm older and I have a goatee, I don't want to get rid of it, I'm looking to do a white face. How could I work around such a thing? How do you get it out?

You could:
-Shave (probably not your first choice) -Cover it with mehron clown white (appearance wouldn't be top notch) -Incorporate your facial hair into your clown character. (This would be my suggestion) -go with a tramp or Auguste character which could incorporate the facial hair more easily. Hope this helps.

I clown, and have had a mustache nearly the entire time I've been clowning. While I think the covering idea works well for me, (much smaller area to cover) I don't think that it would look good for covering the goatee. Given the limitations on what you can do with your mouth, when it is surrounded by hair, I am not sure how any whiteface design would look. These limitations will also effect how much expression will show through vis a vis the mouth, since you can't accentuate the lips as much as a bare-faced clown can. (For me, I just do my character's mouth starting at mine, and work down. You don't have as much of an option there.)
An intermediate step might be taken which would possibly make the designing process simpler for you... disconnect the mustache and the goatee, and leave bare skin for the mouth area to be made up, and leave just a (more goat like) patch of hair on the chin. (A la Dan Rice) Use some spray hair color on it to taste, and voila! If you don't like the tramp idea, you might wish to create a character clown, which gives you a lot of flexibility in what you choose in your make-up scheme. Of course, we could be all wet, and you can come up with a fine design incorporating the full fur look, but I think that it will be a challenge. As for getting the makeup out/off, there are many ways, but is the same as taking it off of your face. There are commercial 'clown' makeup removers, baby oil, and numerous other methods to take make up off. I accidently discovered that Lever 2000 (liquid) works on 'clown parts', too. This saves you from using a cleaner, and then a soap to clean off the cleaner. JM, aka Spazzo The Clown

Remember Cesar Romero as The Joker in the Batman TV show? Clown white (or something like it) over a mustache...

I agree with Rob, the European make up, Auguste or tramp/hobo character type clown work best with facial hair, my son is clowning his way through college with his goatee. He uses the European look, it works very well with his character.

I am an “Auguste” clown and I have a mustache! When I wear my makeup I exaggerate and darken the mustache (basically paint it black). It is part of my character. My clown character evolved over a few decades but has always been Auguste and always had a mustache. I have worn a mustache for over 40 years with only a few days break in there!
The grease paint comes off very easily with a product called “ProFace-Makeup Remover” made by Fantasy Factory, Ltd. and distributed through “ProKnose”. It is a gentle makeup remover and skin lotion all in one. In fact many models have discovered the product and use it after a photo shoot. Leon, a professional clown, (and the manufacturer) told me that while he invented the product for clowns that he was selling as much or more to models.

I should add that with his Euro look he does not put makeup in his goatee. I don't know how to post a photo sorry....
The European auguste uses less make up. but is undeniably a clown!

"MERRY CHRISTMAS"
Hope everyone is having a good Christmas, I know my family and I have been blessed, and are enjoying the season and what it really represents, and I hope all you are also. Haven't been here in a while, but this post really interests me, because I have a mustache that I have really grown attached to. I kill myself. Uh hmm Anyway, I had an idea for using a product that comes out every halloween called "scar stuff". "Scar stuff" is a plasticine type material that could be worked into any facial hair and give your face a smooth (although slightly exagerated)look. Now, whether clown makeup could be applied and stick is where, I believe, my theory may be a bit weak. If I can find some "scar stuff" I'll try it and let you all know the results. If I can't find any, maybe someone else has tried this and could share their findings. Otherwise we wait till halloween, and then check. Godspeed Steve Ps getting the "scar stuff" out of facial hair may add a whole new dimension to cleanup afterwards. Ha ha ha |

The reason I quoted you Justin, is we use ProFace and ProKnows all the time. We tried the make up remover until a friend from CO told us to try something different. Our make up comes off in less than 5 minutes now. What is it? simple, we apply cooking oil (we use canola oil cuz its cheap) and then wash with baby wash (or baby shampoo.) The baby wash is just cuz of the "no tears" effect. This combination of first canola oil then wash with baby wash and warm water just takes the make up right off. Peter "Paddy The Clown" Lansing |

I have had some experience in make-up and have a beard. I (as said above) put it into my character. It adds a bit of uniquness if you ask me.

Another way around the facial hair with the goat would be to just make a chin prosthesis. With it you could add to the shape of your face, and enhance your character.
I know it's not mainstream, but trust me, it works and it isn't that hard to do. MM

I was at my local costume shop today and I posed the question of clowning and facial hair. The lady there suggested using a water soluble glue stick to "plaster" the hairs together and then proceed with make-up. Anyone here ever hear of such? If not, has anyone here "mistakenly" gotten glue from a glue stick in the hair and can tell me their adventure in removing it? Thanks for any help.

The "old timers" would use Bees wax in their eyebrows to make smooth out the above eye area .
other than that, Don't use any glues. just incorporate you facial hair into your look. JustLarry |

Eyebrows and such use to be downed with a bar of slightly damp soap. It works very well and comes off clean...no pun intended.
