What are your views on using the card catcher to produce cards on stage or parlour setting?

Is this another name for the card/deck dropper? Jeff McBride told me to just work off the pack and not bother with those things.. although I'll probably use it to keep a back up deck ready. If the card catcher is a way to avoid learning techniques, I say just bite the bullet and learn the techniques. I find the Cardini single production to be the most valuable move.

I hate a card catcher you can't produce much more than 10 cards and when you start running low the cards fall out stick to pure sleight of hand.

P.S. this is what part of the alphabet would look like if "Q" and "R" were eleminated

I have no problem at all with gimmicks, especially if they improve the effect. To be honest though, there is just so much more you can do without a card catcher. They are fun to play with and Marvey has obviously come up with a way to do some wonderful things with one (though his is not on the market to the best of my knowledge). In the end you'll probably find that you have a lot more versatility with sleight of hand, but never ignore any good possibilities. Perhaps you'll come up with a new way of using one.

Hello guys,
Thanks for the frank and useful comments. Yes, I will spend more time working on the sleights.

I toyed once with the idea of doing a Backstage type of routine (you know, where the magician supposedly shows the audience how the trick works and then pulls the rug out from under them) and "tipping" a fake card catcher--after which I would (unbeknownst to the audience] produce cards the traditional BP way. I think I even tossed around the idea of showing a fake holdout that would supposedly shoot cards out of my sleeve into my hand As I've probably mentioned before, when I first saw Carlo Tornedo do cards and billiard balls on TV, I was convinced (by my younger brother) that everything was up his sleeve and a device like lazy tongs or something delivered them into his hands. Never really developed the "manipulation backstage" routine, though. I guess because I was afraid the audience would really believe that was how it was done.
I remember being really shocked when I found the BP explained in Hay's _Amateur Magician's Handbook_. But I was also relieved because I figured I could learn to do that but never be able to afford a holdout. I figured they were way beyond my financial means. Apropros holdouts--Harry Anderson "demonstrated" a holdout once on the Mike Douglas show and it was hilarious seeing the set up and how a string attached to his knees operated the device by alternately spreading his knees apart and then bringing them back together. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

With a card catcher it will be easier, but not as magical for the audience.

Excuse my ignorance but I have not heard of a "card catcher" before? So this is how marvey does his open-fingered acquittals and productions? I'm off to google it... using a gimmick in my mind is great if its properly used and adds to the mystery...

As Jeb mentioned - Peter Marvey does not use your normal card-catcher.
I played with one once, and it is a diabolical piece of equipment - for me. If you find that is the way to go, great. Dave

I tried the card catcher, did not work well. So I have devoted 2 years of time learning the card manipulation techniques, and it's finally paying off after all the practice sessions, it's more magical if you are willing spent the time to learn.

I have a friend who uses the card catcher all the time in his opening routine and it looks great to the audience. You cannot tell when he steals the gimmick and when he ditches it. He has done it so much it is flawless. I on the other hand chose to do all the learning and practice to do it without the gimmick. What ever you choose to do the card production is up to you. It is the end result is what matters to the audience.
