Good question jake. But the good thing about this thread. no matter what routine you do, if you just spend a little time on this and get the WGM video, and check some other things out, you will be adding some extra things to whatever you do. This thread, in a little over a week, has gotten me from having people really jazzed by my sponge ball magic, to doing something original and some extras, that put it in the miracle category. So my hat is off to all how put this together. I avoided sponges for way too long, being a purist. but be open to trying them out. because the reactions you get with some good techniques are absolutely wild. also, humor and good times just mesh a little better with sponge magic. what's not to like?

When I first got into magic, I went to a convention where Al Goshmn lectured. I don’t think that he was selling sponges yet, but showed the purse frame and a sponge ball routine. I was a layman and I can still remember how it excited me. I’ve been in love with them ever since.

For what it's worth, my two cents is that whatever routine you end up with, have it end with ball/ balls flying to the spectator's hand. That is all anyone remembers because it is the strongest thin you can do with SB.
Over the years, I've heard a number of people describe the effect to someone else and they never say "It was amazing..he put a ball in his pocket and it flew back to his hand!". All they say is,"A ball went from his hand to mine!" That's all they remember because that's the stunning part. Any routine should build to a climax and it's hard to imaging anything stronger than that....and following that with additional, weaker material just makes the routine, peak then get weaker and weaker. When you get a woman shrieking in surprise during a routine, that's probably the place to end... |

Didn’t Dr. Jaks end his routine with a handful of small sponges in the spectator’s hand, or were they rabbits?

I think the best and most powerful way to perform it is to do a few small sequences with the balls going from your hand or pocket to the spectator's hand, but then end it like Brian Gillis or Eugene Burger, with the spectator opening their hand to reveal a dozen (or more) balls

Good thinking here. no matter how much a magician admires his sponge ball sleights, once you do the sponge to spectators hand, it is hard to follow it.
but having a big multi sponge finale as with Dr. Jaks sounds great. |

I know Brian Gillis's routine (or at least the one he did on Johnny Carson) ended with a giant ball after the dozen(s) sponges. Does anyone have success with this or would you say it's better to just end with the many sponges?

I based my sponge ball routine on Carl Andrew's Ain't No Moe and Papa Rabbit Hits the Big Time by Daryl. Both are excellent and if you combine them you have an exceptional routine.

If you are having great success with sponge balls, you have to get Daryl's 4 dvd sponge ball set. You will learn a lot of good things that will let you take it to the next and next level. Daryl is a great teacher.

Curious if anyone has found a more elegant way to utilize sponge balls? Like black sponge cubes or something? I love sponge ball magic but they always strike me as somewhat cheesy.

Did any one ever see a magician doing really cool sponge ball magic and he uses different color spongeballs? he is amazing!!!!! its not in english!!!!

If you speak spanish, you can't beat the Xulio Merino book (esponjismagia xuliana)
there you can get the best "showings" (I don't know the proper term in english) I ever see for example, go to 2:10 mark in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8lC0Pv1Lv8 there you have A LOT OF tips about performing SB and 15 games, all done with simple material (he uses the pockets and sleeves to load) we had a conference last week with him and the things he can do with them are really fantastic + he studied the SB from the ASCANIO and other masters view, you can see that in his thinking |
