I need some assistance, there was a trick called "out of this world" and then there was a simular trick that took it one step above. At the ripe age of 65 I'll be darned if I can remember it. Can somebody please kick me in the brain cells to help me remember?
TIA (thanks in advance) Frank Thomas

Out of this Universe by Harry Lorayne maybe? There are so many variations that make this a tricky question to answer.

The spectator can shuffle to her heart's content and this alone really makes the effect all the more effective IMHO. In addition however, Mr. Lorayne adds a few convincers that really lock in the impossibility of the effect. Now to expand a bit: J.K. Hartman has a wonderful approach to OOTW called "Back to Earth" in his book titled Card Dupery. Here is the effect: The magician introduces what he calls a "special deck" of cards that is tuned to be receptive to clairvoyant tendencies in people. You show that the deck is genuinely mixed - it is BTW - and state that the spectator just might possess latent clairvoyant abilities. So, you tell that spectator that she is going to attempt to separate the colors. This gets a laugh as you are holding the pack face up. The magician states that the caveat is that the spectator must keep her eyes closed as she separates the colors. You stand away from the table and allow the spectator to start dealing. (It adds to the effect to have a second spectator help to tidy up the piles). The spectator opens her eyes and it's obvious she failed - or did she? You remind her that this is a special pack of cards and you have her turn the cards face DOWN and BAM! She has separated the colors into blue backed and red backed cards! No special cards are needed and the procedure is nicely constructed. Magicians watching this who are not familiar with the effect will think your cheese has slipped off your cracker! There have been other aproaches with OOTW in which a prediction is written before hand which might state "You have missed on three reds." There was a thread not long ago in which this was debated. I believe that such a prediction weakens the impossibility of the effect because it further hints that you had control of the cards all of the time - even if you do an impromptu version. Harry Loryane offered sound reasoning for why he does not like the prediction approach and his thinking is sound. Other approaches I have read include Out of This Galaxy by Paul Harris and Out of This Borough by David Regal. By the way, tangential somewhat to this thread, but the progenitor of OOTW is a Walter Gibson effect titled Payoff which appeared as the first effect in the very first issue of The Phoenix. It's a great effect and could play well with OOTW. I am certain there are others and I defer to the more knowledgeable among us. That said, I hope that The Fritz and I were of some help! I like Oulett's version, Netherworld. Easy set-up, less cards, less time, easy to do, completely deceiving. Find in Close Up Illusions.

I have grown very fond of out of this universe, and is the only version I do right now.

Didn't a book come out recently -- the title and author(s) escape me at the moment (I'm almost 65, also) -- which was billed as the most complete compendium ever of variations on OOTW? It was a big, hardcover book, as I remember. There are a TON of variations on this.

"Best of All Worlds" "Filled with history, stories, and, most of all, magic, Best of All Worlds pays tribute to one of the greatest card tricks of all time: Paul Curry's classic card effect Out of This World. Gene Devoe taught me Paul Curry's Out of This World when I was 8 years old.....that was in 1956!
It was the first Magic Trick I ever learned in my life and I still do it today. What's really amazing to me is that people remember that trick years after they see it. It's THAT special. When people come up to you years after they see you perform a magic trick and they tell you that "to this day I still can't figure out how you made me deal the deck out in all red and black piles of cards.....that was the most amazing thing I ever saw in my life.".... ....You know you've got a Hell of a good card trick! |

This discussion sent me back to my yellowed copy of Harry Lorayne's C-UCM. Out of This Universe is the most convincing variation (improvement?) of OOTW, the preset not withstanding, because of the multiple shuffles (IMHO). But if your're being burned and you can't do the setup, Ouellet's "Netherworld" makes a nice alternative.

I teach how do the"preset" while being "burned" in my write-up (both in C-UCM and TCC, Vol. 1). And, if you still can't do it - check out my impromptu OOTW.

Paul Harris Galaxy version is one of my favorite...though there has been some critisim of the final display of the cards being less than natural. I prefer this minor issue if it even is one to the "follow the leader" idea present in others.

I have tried it this way:
I have only two piles (not four) and when the spectator is finished, I pick up the piles and look at them myself. I say they haven't got it perfect and pause. "But it CAN be fixed" I then riffle shuffle them together and give a few false cuts. Having a b***k at the appropriate places during the riffle shuffle means that I can then spread them and they have separated into reds and blacks. I'll admit it's not as impressive as the standard OOTW premise, it's just something I did to change it up a bit, when part-way through someone said "I've seen this one before" It just shifts it from being a mental effect to a demonstration of the performer's card skills. |

I devised Out Of This Universe way back in the 1950s [b]just because the basic Out Of This Words was becoming too well known{/b}. ( fooled Paul Curry with it. HL.

That's an interesting anecdote, Harry. Now I'm just waiting for you to write that book of stories regarding your tricks, other magicians you've known, etc.
