Where does someone go to figure out what kind of utility devices there even are in the world of magic? With the need to keep things secret it is very difficult to learn what there is to buy. I'm not looking to learn how the devices work, for that I should be funding the creators. I'm more looking to be able to go, "I want a device to help vanish small objects so ______ type devices can do that." Can someone help or possibly phrase this in a way that people can help?

Take a look at The Invisible hand holdout by Vernet. I get the impression however that you are trying to run before you can walk. You may wish to look for a magic club in your area. The public library is a good source to get you started in magic. You may find the search and subsequent purchase of devices dissappointing.
Fluent Spanish speaker, if I can help anyone, let me know.

Sleight of Hand is still your best bet for vanishing small objects ie: you are always ready to do a vanish when called upon.
With that said, the TT is still a great item to have with you, especially when you want to make water vanish or appear (pea can substitute). Too many "devices" only get in the way of things and don't always look so Magical. Just my opinion. Iven

Check out TKO 2.0 by Jeff Kaylor. I won't say anymore than that for not wanting to expose anything. Google it, check out the trailer, read reviews and if you like what you see give it a try. I don't know your budget so it may be a bit pricey but definitely one to look at.
I do agree that sleight of hand is the best "utility device" you'll ever use. Practice, Practice Practice!!! AA

Get a good book or DVD on sleight of hand.

The is a big difference between the "effect" you are trying to accomplish and the "method" for producing the illusion. A "device" or "gimmick" may or may not be appropriate -- and just acquiring a number of devices will limit the effects you can create.
You request for "utility devices" is interesting as it implies gimmicks that can be used to produce several different effects, e.g. a "vanisher" that will handle a coin, silk, piece of rope, fist-full of salt or a glass of water. (such as think exists -- ask a dealer) -- but they are rare. Instead, I suggest making list of results you wish to accomplish and then learning/practicing several ways of accomplishing this objective. Such a list might include: vanishing a small object, transporting an object for one place to another and transforming an object from one form to another. each of these can be accomplished with a "device" or a Sleight. You should be able to do either. Additionally, the handling of many devices requires Sleights -- no gimmick does the trick by itself. Often times, the moves required to hide the gimmick makes the gimmick unnecessary in that you can now do the effect without it. However, in an attempt to answer what you might be asking, check out a Pull, TT and PK Ring. -- but, do not be limited by the instructions that come with them.

Just browse the Café. All the information you need is here, and googleable. You might need a little grounding in the basics to understand some of it, for which I'd recommend "Mark Wilson's Complete Course In Magic" and "The Amateur Magician's Handbook" by Henry Hay. You can get both on Amazon for a few bucks. For recently released versions of common utility devices, read the threads in "Latest and Greatest" right here on the Café.
There are also many, many magic books in the public domain; it's easy to search on google books or http://www.archive.org for lots of material. You just need to have the motivation to plow through all the irrelevant stuff to find what you want. |

I appreciate everyone's concern that I learn sleight of hand. I have Card College 1-3, Bobo, Erdnase, RRtCM, The Amateur Magician's Handbook, and Expert Card Techniques. I have more interest in learning and using sleight of hand. My interest in utility devices/gimmicks is mostly curiosity. I'm more looking to learn about the general concepts or learn what kind of devices will do what than I am looking to actually buy anything at this point.
Question rephrased and narrowed: I am looking to vanish small objects (dice, coins, sponge balls, ping pong balls, etc.) Are there devices out there made for this sort of thing, and if there are what are they? Thank you all for the helpful replies thus far. |

You: Magic is not real. People don't do magic. People do illusions. I guess I just don't understand why you are trying to argue semantics about vanishing with a guy who is trying to learn more about the various utility devices that can help do vanishes. What does that accomplish? I get that you'd have preferred he wrote "I am looking to perform the illusion that I vanish small objects." But we all knew what he meant when he wrote "I am looking to vanish small objects." |

I meant I am looking to create the illusion of vanishing a small object. What devices could help in creating this illusion?
I apologize for my lack of clarity. I don't ever expect to truly vanish objects and, if I did, this forum seems like it would be the wrong place to start. Since I am interested in illusion this forum seems like a wonderful place to be. Thank you all for your help in answering my question. If there is any more to share on possible devices, or agreeance with those already suggested, I would love to hear them. If not, please let the post fade into the depths of the café. Thank you. |

I wouldn’t normally recommend getting a whole book just to learn one effect, but The Amateur Magician’s Handbook by Henry Hay is one of the first (in my opinion) that should be on everybody’s bookshelf.
Page numbers can change through various editions (the one I’m looking at right now is Fourth Edition, copyright 1982, “Featuring New Sections on Shows for Children and By the Amazing Randi: Coaching Yourself with Videotape”.) Whatever edition you can find will be a huge boon to your magic! Anyway, for what most are describing here, the secret word is PULL. Hay doesn’t spend a lot of time talking about these invaluable little gimmicks, but Part Three: Apparatus Magic, Chapter 15: Silks, in Section 2: Vanishes, he very briefly describes the two main types that most magicians will be familiar with, and why one may be preferable to the other. There is enough detail in the text for you to devise one for yourself, and only practice can tell you how this will work for you. I will tell you that in my experience, being able to pin something inside your jacket (and change between jackets) plus being able to remove the gimmick when you remove your coat is a HUGE blessing. (I’ve also used the other kind, and it is powerful as well.) Later on in Chapter 16: Small Gimmicks and Fakes, Hay adds a brief (two short paragraphs) mentioning the types of things that can be vanished using this device. At this point your own imagination is your best friend, as just about anything you can imagine can be put to use, from alligator clips to magnets to duct tape to rubber balls. (Sorry to be so cryptic, but this is a Google-able area.) As I said, I wouldn’t normally recommend buying a whole book for one item, but this is a very valuable book! There are MANY ways to vanish a small item, some using no gimmicks at all. This book may become your best friend! Good Luck!
...what if I could read your mind?

The Amateur Magician’s Handbook is the book I have suggested many times here at the Café. I have the second and fourth printings in hard back and I have the e-book on my Kindle. It was the first "real" Magic book I ever read.
I have Tarbell, Mark Wilson's Complete Course and many many other "classic" books but the one I go to the most is Henry Hay's Amateur Magician's Handbook. Most decent Libraries have this book and you can get it off Amazon or the e-book off of Lybrary.com Iven
