Hello, I was wondering if anyone else has a problem with the scotch and soda shell not sliding together very well. For me it’s a hit or miss kind of thing. Sometimes it will go together without any problems but sometimes it gets hung up sideways. Now when I separate the two coins with the black plastic circle devise there is never a problem. Now this has happened from day one of buying it. I went back to the magic shop and tried out some of the others they had in stock and I found the same thing was happening so I’m thinking I’m the problem. I just can't figure out what I’m doing wrong.

Royal magic is the make of the coins.... I'm guessing it may be the manufature?

Out of curiosity, what are you expecting the gimmick to do? A magnetic S&S will join together all by itself - no further manipulation by you is needed. That type you have though - that needs a bang ring to separate it - doesn’t just join together by itself. You need to press it together - physically.

When I physically press them together there are times it hangs up and gets stuck where one side of the coin is sticking out. I can press really hard and force the coin to go flush but when I do that there is a large crack sound. I don't want to have to force them together with brute force where there is a crack sound because I'm sure that's not good for the coins. When everything goes good the coins go together smooth and with a little force of the fingers closing over the coins.

Take your shell and place it mouth down on a flat hard surface.and push down in the center of the shell.not too hard.and see if that helps robinson.also check your insert coin out.making sure there is no burr on the outer edge that could be causing it to hang on.

Also, (it has to be said) you get what you pay for. A Johnson Scotch and soda lasted me over 15 years. Im not sure about Tango Quality but it is most likely better than Royal. then there are the heavy hitters - Lassen, Schoolcraft, Kueppers, Mogar...Top end stuff. Now with that in mind, I love my Lassens and my Mogars, but as I always say - Johnson is the working mans coin. Price + quality + durability = Johnson until you can afford (or just want) the heavy hitters

Yah I think that it may be a quality issue. I'm going to buy a S&S Johnson and see if that fixes the problem.

I'm not a big fan of Royal. I'm with Poof on this. You should be much happier with Johnson.

@robinsonm,
I had the same problem with my first S&S set. I believe I had the same set you did. I corrected the problem by locking and unlocking the set while watching tv. I think it took about 5 half hour tv shows to finally "break in" my S&S set. I purchased a Johnson set and never had a problem with it. Johnson simply makes a better set. |

I have no idea who made my S & S set. I bouht it some 30 years ago at a magic shop in Canon City, Colorodo. It came with a metal B-ring and I have never had any problem with it!

I am looking to getting a Johnson Scotch and Soda. I did see that there is a magnetic version. Slightly different, but close. Which would be the better option?

J-Mac how do you like the magnetic version? What differences if any? Any drawbacks?

My magnetic S &S dates back to the mid late '70s. Not new stuff. It is probably a Johnson product. It is well made and does not require any effort in closing the gimmick. Oh and it is very deceptive.
