Although I mainly do Close-Up, I want to use a topit as they are good for ditching etc. Can anyone suggest a good one or know of any plans around? Preferably electronic. I know some online stores sell PDF versions but I haven't been able to find any.

I have one for my vest.
Here in Florida, it's hot most of the time, and a jacket is out of the question. My vest, however, has a small topit I had made by a seamstress and installed in my cheesy, navy-blue pinstripe vest I got from a 3-piece suit at the Salvation Army. I've got extra pockets and a few extra "special" things done to it. It cost me a total of $10 for the lady to "doctor" it up for me. I paid $5 for the vest, so $15 ain't a bad in"vest"ment... (ahem) The topit is a quirky thing. Ya gotta be careful how you use it. Make sure the side pocket of your vest or jacket "communicates" with the topit, so you can recover (or steal) the item "pitched and ditched." Michael Ammar has the best routines (IMO) using the topit. It's been around a long time, but that appearing Champagne bottle, man...what a killer effect... Anyone else? Doug |

The Mike Ammar topit design is really one of the best I have seen.

I use Ammar's "Standard" design, which is linked to the left outside jacket pocket, and also Michael Weber's, which "chutes" to the bottom right hand hem of the jacket. Very clever placement that makes going to the pocket, to retrieve items, a non-issue.
Cheers!

I've seen Jay Scott Berry offer a topit and have seen him use it very well. I have not tried it myself but the design is supposed to be superb.

I agree. The Jay Scott Berry design is superior, in my opinion, to every other topit out there.

Jay Scott Berry's topit is excellent. I've seen him work it, and it’s about as close as you can get to pure magic.
As soon as my new jacket is made, it’s going straight in there... He has a site... http://www.jayscottberry.com/index1.html Not sure if he sells online though... -malini. |

I will have to pop along then. I should go more often really. Although I really should apply first. I've been put off as I know quite a few members who have said there's alot of politics at the moment.

Yes, I agree!
Oli makes a good point. I won't be a member of a "club" for that very reason. Doug |

Oli,
There's always been a huge amount of politics, and I think there always will be. That's not to say there should be, but that's just the way it is. |

I think you can find more uses of the Topit in a close-up situation than in a stage performance. I’m using Ammar’s Topit pattern, and over the years it has worked for me so well that I really don’t have any complaints. I have Cloutier’s pattern too, which is bigger than Ammar’s, but I have not gotten around to having it sewn and attached to my jacket. Sylvester the Jester has a jacketless Topit called Suspended Dimension, which you may want to check, if wearing a jacket is a concern. Well, Suspended Dimension also raises sartorial concerns among magicians, because it uses a fashion accessory that may not be suited to your taste. Anyway it’s worth checking it out, if you are serious about Topit work. I don’t use it, because of that fashion accessory issue, but I’ve seen the video and an actual live performance of it. It’s great for producing large objects, such as wine bottles, but using it to vanish everyday objects, say, a cell phone, is not a smooth as tossing them into a jacket Topit. Yesterday, with Jay Scott Berry, he gave me the scoop on his topit. I don't think you can find a better setup. It sure beats anything else I have seen, and I have seen and used many.
In addition to the coat topit, Norm Nielsen http://www.nnmagic.com sells Bob Dreibeek's great Necktie Topit (as used by Fred Kaps).

Michael Ammar’s two-volume videos on the topit are a comprehensive resource that discusses exhaustively its construction, uses (vanishes, switches, ditches, retrievals, etc.), moves, psychology and, of course, the tricks and routines that can be accomplished by this utility device.
My favorite in the video is the full-deck switch and Ammar’s Coin Matrix. Footage of the performance of these tricks on the Johnny Carson Show is included in the video to emphasize the usefulness (and dependability) of the topit in so-called under-fire conditions. In Michael Ammar Live at the Magic Castle video, Ammar discusses and teaches his topit, among other things. He teaches how to produce and vanish a wine bottle via the topit, and how to ditch the gaffed coin for the pencil-thru-quarter trick. I can’t remember now which video I learned Ammar’s “Silk to Egg”. In Ammar’s method, he uses the topit to switch the plastic egg with a real egg. Up to the last moment, the audience sees the red silk not yet completely tucked inside the plastic egg. And yet, an instant later, the “plastic” egg is broken on an empty glass to prove that it’s a real egg. Beautiful magic that is made easy to perform with the topit’s help. I have been practicing with a topit for five years now. I started with one, an Ammar, in my magic jacket. As far as using a topit you will need to practice a great deal. Design is very important to the flow of your routines. Check out all the designs you will be able to adapt different design to fill YOUR needs. There is magic possible with a topit that is phenomenal, if you put in the work (time, money, etc.).
I started with a deck vanish. I worked on it for six months, day and night. I could do the " trick" after a day but I couldn't present it to an audience for at least three months. I spent a lot more time on it due to the nature of a deck of cards. The only other advice I can pass on is roll up your sleeves. Joe |

I have not used one for a while. I loved it when I used it. I used to do a routine where balls visually changed colors and it required the topit. Once I had it, I started using it for many other things.

Oli Dude! Topits are very useful to close-up performers. Jay Scotts is the cats meow. It is also reasonably priced. I had the pleasure of seeing his lecture at McBride's master class. The possibilities are endless.
Never used one of Ammar's. A friend of mine uses topits in his coat, as well as a small vest topit. It consists of one center button removed and permanently attached to the button hole side. The pocket extends inside the vest, almost the length of three button holes. The opening runs the same line as the vest opening. You can't ditch a bottle of wine but you can flip off extra coins, false tips and other small items and finish clean. Personally, I like to start clean and finish clean, being able to let a close-up audience examine anything I use. Dynamike, Patrick Page of England has a tape on topit use. It is available through International Magicians Society. Personally, I would not build an entire act around a topit, just as one would not build an entire routine around a false tip. However, it has a place in the routine and is very deceptive. I like using different methods constantly. Combine topit and some sleeving and have some fun. Jay Scott Berry has a video on topit I believe. Man, this guy uses the topit to its best potential. Hope you are having fun! FD |
