A good friend of mine and I went to a Sushi and Hibachi restaurant last night to talk to the owners about performing for their guests. We call got talking to the head chef, waitress and hostess. Initially they asked me to perform for some guests to see how they would respond, I said I would love too but seeing it was a slow night and only about 5 tables were seated and every table was already eating I explained I don’t like to bother guests while they are eating.

So my friend and I were taking turns doing a few effects for the staff. Everyone was laughing and having a great magical time when one of the tables, and a guy from a completely different table stood up and walked over to our group. As they walked up to us a woman started to say “You have already disrupted my dinner” for this split second I thought she was going to complain we had the staff too occupied. But then she continued “Now I want to see what all this commotion is about” These guests seriously got out of their seats during their meal to come over and see some magic. However they came at the perfect time, I had just done a deck switch and was about to perform Jon Bannon’s Strangers gallery with a rainbow deck finish. As always the trick killed, and the guests were floored, they all sat back down to finish their meal.
Long Story short (too late) My friend and I booked the gig on Saturday nights, we will be taking turns working it depending on our schedules.

I thought this was rather unique; in the past I have had guests ask for me to come to their table while they were still eating, but this is the first time they actually left their table halfway into their meal to come and experience some magic.

First of all congratulations!! YES, people are as different as the stars in the sky.
Some are enthusiastic while others are indifferent and downright rude. Some need coddled while others jump right in. etc. etc.
You were at the "right place at the right time with the right guests"
Perfect timing. Thanks for sharing!!

You created excitement and they wanted to be a part of it.

Andy,

I'm happy to hear about your story. Good timing. Isn't it awesome having a wingman you can rely on? This is exactly the reason our SLM team has so much continued success is because we offer the support system. I keep trying to tell magicians that there is definitely power in numbers. Can you imagine if you had a group of professional and courteous magicians in a city that pulled together and wanted to elevate the art of magic and how it's perceived? Unfortunately too many times ego plays the villain and you have guys undercutting other guys instead of raising the bar. I weep for those who underestimate the power of teamwork.

Best of luck bro.

Lucky for me I have a good amount of magician friends in the area, most guys around here do magic as a hobby. There are a few "pro's" and we help each other out often by passing along gigs and giving tips, its kind of like the magic Café, just in person. I have been lucky enough to work with guys like David Seebach and Brett Daniels(when he is in town) But its the smaller guys that really stick together. I was able to busk inside of summerfest because a fellow magician hooked me up with the gig, and in return I gave him a really nice corporate gig next weekend that I could not fit into my schedule. (He told me the gig is paying for all of his holiday shopping, and he has 3 kids) The funny thing is that corporate gig was initially given to me by a different magician who couldn’t do it. Milwaukee is a pretty small market especially being so close to Chicago, but it’s full of great guys. Brett Daniels once told me something like “I don’t like it when a magician says I don’t care what other magicians think of me, I don’t perform for other magicians I perform for a lay audience. You should care what other magicians think about you, some of my biggest breaks in magic came from referrals from other magicians, that is how I was able to work Atlantic city, that is how I worked a gig in Florida, and in Florida I was able to meet (I forgot the guys name) Who now produces and markets our touring show The Illusionist that sold out the Sydney Opera house.”

I worked as a Business Specialist at a bank for the last two years in Kenosha, and I just recently transferred to Racine to be closer to home, seeing I live in the Milwaukee Suburbs. Still working my way to do this magic thing "Full Time" I am always eager to meet fellow magicians and "nerd it out" for a few hours.

Congrats. Next time I get back to Wisconsin hopefully will be able to check you out

If I remember correctly weren't you also working at a new magic shop? How's that going? Very intriguing to hear of a brick and mortar magic shop opening up these days.

Yes I am still at Big Guy’s Magic Its going pretty well the shop has been open for almost 2 years now, I have the shop to thank for a lot of the shows I do and for introducing me to a lot of other magicians. Like Chad Long, Howard Hamburg, Jeff McBride, Brett Daniels, and many others. The cool thing about big guys is there is a huge library of books in the back room, all the books are part of the owner’s personal collection, and there are tons of great books back there. The entire apocalypse collection, Card College, royal road, BOBO’s, and Tarbell, just to name a few. Since the books are back there any magician can go back there and read them, you can’t check them out, or leave the room with them, but it’s great for references or to look something up. If you like the book enough Big Guy will order it for you.
Anyway the shop is a great central location for area magicians.

Great story and good to hear. It is important to network with others out there in your area. You never know where it will lead.
On the other subject of worrying about what maicians think of me, well I understand what you are saying, but I am only concerned about a very small group and what they think. The rest......I couldn't care less because I find that ego and jealousy/envy doesn't allow them to share their real thoughts about my work anyway.

I know exactly what you mean. If you were to sit in a room and perform a basic ACR routine for ten other magicians, it would probably go something like this.

3- Will say you did a good job, and may offer some help, tips, or advice

2- Will have no idea what happened, because ACR is not self working

3- Won’t comment on your routine, but will have no problem bragging about

their variations, that no one has ever, or will ever see.

2- Will tell you it’s an over done effect, and to be original, as they secretly write down your patter.
