I'm currious as to how may packet tricks could be addapted from a borrowed deck?
I like to do a color monte with a joker, and two aces. But it got me thinking if anyone has compiled a list of packet tricks that can be done when presented a standard deck.

Hi Mike,
A list of individual effects would be huge, but perhaps a list of books that contain effects that meet your criteria would be a good start. Obviously including individual effects is fine. The first choice that comes to my mind is Focus by Max Maven (then known as Phil Goldstein). It's a treasure trove and most of the effects meet the criteria. But are you asking about individual marketed effects? If that's the case, then forget my initial suggestion. In one part of your question you ask about adaptation, but then you end with the notion of compiling a list of packet effects that can be done when presented with a standard deck. The Café's Paul Hallas is really the guru of packet effects and he has written two books on the subject. If you could clarify a bit more it would help. Namaste, Vlad PS: I am curious why you would use two aces in Color Monte - which by the way is not originally its name nor is Jim Temple its creator. Check out Ibidem. Anyhow, if an ace is the "money card" why not use a Joker, a Queen, and the AS? I am trying to visualize the effectiveness of contrast in your setup and it seems like using Joker, Q, A would provide a much better contrast. Oh, and as for Jim Temple, he did create the effect with the color cards, but the routine is by Marlo really; the effect is the same, just cards are different. This has been debated every once in awhile and some magicians have argued that the handling in Ibidem is actually better. |

Vlad – Thanks for your response. I guess I was a bit muddled in my post. I was perusing through the 8 pages of “the three best packet tricks” post and couldn’t help noticing that a number of them could be performed from a normal deck. This led to post.
And thanks for the lesson on the Color Monte. I didn’t know the history but now I’m compelled to check into Marlo and Ibidem. Steven – Thank you. That’s exactly what I was looking for.

Guys, I have a whole ebook of ten improptu packet tricks with totally normal cards. It's called Let's Get Small. Link is in my signature. Got a really terrific review from the notoriously hard to please Tom Fame on the Genii forum.

Cameron's stuff is great. Trost's books and Hamman's material are invaluable. The great Aldo Colimbini has several DVDs with
descriptions, instruction and ideas of setting up and performing packet tricks just as you describe. I also suggest you look into memory deck work.

My favorite packet trick with normal cards, Twister by Chris Kenner. 4 Aces, turn face up one at a time, then change to Jacks one at a time, the back to aces all at once. Borrowed deck.
