It's an old beginners trick, you may find in your nearest novelty shop. However someone did put a manuscript out a few years back with updated uses, just cannot remember the title.
You can find out what it is in the Dover publication Self Working Paper Magic by Karl Fulves which any book shop can order for you, it is a low priced publication (approx. $6) but you will find some good tricks in it!!! The book is also gaffed for a book test. You will also find a good routine for it called Nailed in "Tricks of The Imagination" by Robert E. Neale. Paul Hallas. |

If my memory is correct, I believe that Brother Shadow ( Carl Herron) wrote a book of bizarre effects using the Buddha papers. It's probably still available from him.

John,
You are correct about Bro. Shadow's book, the title of which is "The Papers of Gautama Siddhartha" and is available from him. His email is broshad@aol.com. There are four routines: The Fountain of Youth The Elf's Gift (for kids) The Man Who Could See Your Soul A Mystery Solved The best set of Buddah papers I've seen are available from Mary Tomich at Thaumysta Magick. Best regards, Tony Razzano

I'm sorry for my ignorance, but what are buddha papers?

Anthony you simply wrap something up in a series of papers and when unwrapped the object has vanished or changed. My post above tells you a good source for that effect plus lots of others with paper!
Why did you need to know? Paul Hallas |

I close my children's act with Buddha papers. I use them to magically produce a birthday card for the child of honor.
My first set was from a series of tricks marketed by Milton Bradley (i think) in the mid-seventies -they used high end packaging and real magic tricks, I also got my first thumb tip from this series. Their Buddha papers were called "The Phantom Folder". I have made several of my own set's since then. Just recently I made a very up-scale looking set out of fancy natural looking paper. I haven't seen them anywhere else. I'm very interested now in the other references listed here. Thanks! |

Brother Shadow`s routine "The Fountain of Youth" is one of the best "bizarre" tricks I have seen in the past ten years. Our friend Shadow has a specially made up set of buddha papers for it. The trick is simple beautiful and beautifully SIMPLE! With the right presentation, it is a winner!. To make the papers you will learn from the manuscript Brother shadow sells.
Any questions? Feel free to ask! TED LESLEY

I have also found a good explanation for making up Buddha papers in "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Magic" by Tom Ogden. I found this book at the local library. It is available from Amazon.com.
A somewhat clumsy description is also in Tarbell volume 7. To me it seems that both of the above references intend the folded packet to be perfectly square. The sets I make are rectangular, with the inner most paper folded to accomodate a poker sized playing card. At the end of my birthday party routine, I tell the birthday child that I intended to get them a card but didn't have time, then ask if they would like to see how a magician makes a birthday card. I unfold the papers and have the child sprinkle confetti into the inner paper. When unfolded it has transformed into a personalized birthday card. For older children I often will then give them the Buddha papers and a little private magic lesson on how to use them. |

The birthday card idea is a great one! Thanks for the tip. Now I can use my Buddha papers again, which I dismissed a long time ago.

Budda papers can be made out of almost any paper material depending on the type of effect you want to produce.

If you subscribe to The Linking Ring do an online search in it for "Buddha Envelopes" (March 1991, I think).

I am searching for a way to see/read/purchase the Brother Shadow Buddha papers routine. He has passed away, and there seems to be no way to access these routines. Please send me a message if you have a copy. I have studied papermaking, parchment making and book binding, and am going to be making some custom Buddha papers very soon. I already have two versions of the effect, but want a really good storytelling routine to go with it.
Best wishes, John Green
