I think it's a shame that Ian got ripped off by Dixie exposing his metal straight jacket.
I think it's also a shame that so many magicians buy the secret, and only pay for things if they don't know the secret. I think that's bad policy. It's unfortunate when someone in our craft invents something original through hard work and someone else tries to ruin it. And it's unfortunate that people will look on an effect sordidly just because some idiot masked magician or other competitor exposed it. So I am offering to buy one of these from Ian to reward him for his hard work on escapes and to encourage him to buck up from all these scammers. I hope this will be taken as a peace offering and a respectful compliment of his work (I think the jacket looked awesome and had a great method.) Ian should be rewarded for his efforts.

Well, it doesn't look like Ian is responding. It was worth a shot. I will also PM him.

Why are you trying to buy from somone in an open forum. It is NONE of our business who deals with who. I am pretty sure that none of the people who sell escape, magic, illusions look on web sites waiting to see if somone in an open forum wants to buy from them! It would strike me as a strange way to spend time trying to get any custom (assuming that they wanted any).

I want everyone to know that I am publicly standing by Ian's product and that it is a good product. I want everyone to know that I'm willing to lay out my own hard cash for it. And I've contacted Ian privately.
I think that it is easy to demonize people and treat them as enemies, much harder to forgive and be nice and be friends. I want to see if by doing a genuinely kind gesture, he will reciprocate. I want to bury the hatchet. And many times customers of Ians have publicly said they have bought things from him and that they were a good buy. I agree with giving someone good publicity for a good product.

I am not suggesting Ian can be "bought" ken.
I'm just trying to take a positive step towards a more positive relationship. If you were a barber and I had an argument with you, said I wanted to make peace and came to your barbershop for a haircut, that would be a peace offering. That's why it's called a peace offering. It's an offering. It's an effort. I'm willing to part with my hard earned cash to support Ian's work and to try to right a wrong which was done to him. It's not done to "make up" for anything, just an attempt at a fresh start. That's a little different than 30 pieces of silver, paid to put an innocent man to death! But as usual on this board, you compare a nice act done to someone with bribe money paid to have a man tortured and killed. Perfectly fair, of course, perfectly balanced. Not hyperbolic or exaggerated or overly emotional at all. I try to do something nice and you call me a Judas. Okay Ken. Whatever.

Is it your normal practice to tell everyone what you are offering to buy? It seems, to me, a very strange thing to do. |

Yes, I know Ian's products are very good. I have two of them in my show right now. I bought them through Cannon's.
I don't understand what you don't get about this. I am publicly stating that Ian's products are good, and that I am willing to part with a good chunk of change in order to get an expensive one. I'm also extending trust to him by asking him to make something, sending him the money, and trusting him to make it and send it to me. It's a public display of affection for his work and an act of kindness where he was wronged by Dixie. The reason I'm doing it publicly is to try and publicly put a good face on things and publicly end a feud with him and all his friends. What exactly don't you get about this?

Listen to this.
You're in a market. You get into a disagreement with someone selling oranges. You two fight about it in the public market. Everyone sees. Then you say "You know what? Let's call it even. Let's be friends. Give me a dozen of your oranges. HEY EVERYONE, I'm buying oranges from this guy. These oranges taste great! Everyone should buy Oranges from this guy." Then I extend my hand for him to shake it. That's what's going on here. Get it?

Ill go back and look but not reply (this will be my last post on this thread about this subject) To answer your question directly..... "what's it to you what McCauley would like to do, here" .... None of my business and in a way that's my point! ..... But the its none of yours either, or Ken, or Curtis, or Cliff, or James ....... And on and on. But as it was clearly aired here on a public forum for the world to see I feel like we have all been invited to the table. ...... If am wrong there let me now I will take it on board ...... Me I would have used a PM...... But as it is public I will give my final thoughts then I am off to Tosys-R-Us I just find it a bit strange. Obviously I am the only one on here who finds it strange. But to be honest, it feels to me like McCauley wants to get Ian to not sell him something so that he can then get all upset about it and join, as a fully paid member, the IDAMTWAT club (Ian Discriminates Against Me Through Withholding Amazing Tools) . Ok I am basing this feeling on recent actions, maybe I am a touch sceptical - I look forward to being proved wrong over time. Maybe you think I should just drop it and I will after I have clicked post at the bottom of the page. in the meantime, however, I want to say this...... I don't think your actions are very HUMBLE. To try and make up with someone in a way that you tell the whole world what an amazing act of reconciliation you are about to go through and how you are willing to try, takes some of the personal nature of an apology out of the equation. It all seems very egotistical to me AND seems like it is designed to put pressure on the other person, or score points (or even both). I don't think that forcing someone to apologise is right. If they are truly sorry then fine, let them apologise, then accept and move on (or don't forgive no body said that an apology has to be automatically accepted acceptance of an apology can be as hard as the act of apologising). In fact I believe reconciliation needs an apology and forgiveness). McCauley can you just confirm for me - have you seen / tried / used on of Ian's Steel SJs? I accept that he makes great kit. I too own some of his kit and really like using it. But I personally wouldn't say that something is great before I had seen it. Sure you can assume that something is going to be good based on previous experiences of kit made by the same person. But shouldn't you hold your review until you have actually used it? Surely reviewing something or making comments about something before you have seen it for real could land to in the stuck. If you say how good it is, then when you get it and it is not as good as you were expecting what to do? Do you retract your comments? Wouldn't that make you look foolish? I just don't see what it accomplishes - I guess that's the pesemist in me. Now I am prepared to accept that there is a possibility that you want to stop the feud, however my personal opinion is that you should do it in a humble way, out of the public eye (if reconciliations is something you both want). That is of course up to you and I look forward to being proven wrong in the long term. I very much feel that actions will speak louder than words in the long term so lets see what happens....... So if everyone is happy for me to leave it at that I will push the po..... Oh it says submit not post! How wrong was I? I do apologise. |

No, I don't feel that way. I'd really like a metal escape jacket, but if Ian won't sell it to me, I'll buy it elsewhere or make it myself. I've become pretty adept at building props now, gimmicking things and so forth. I can't do everything Ian can do obviously, but that doesn't prevent me from being a great escape artist, using my own ingenuity or ideas. I'm not the guy at the magic shop always buying the latest thing and complaining if it's out of stock. You must have me confused with someone else! To be honest I don't like buying things, I like creating my own illusions, escapes and so forth. It's more rewarding and much cheaper. I splurge every know and again, but if Ian says no, I'm not going to cry in my soup or anything. If he says no, then he refuses my peace offering. Fine, but you can't say that on my part I didn't try to make amends.

I understand that Dave, but the feud was in public so I think it's proper that the peace offering be in public. I didn't ask Ian to apologize or admit he was wrong about anything, not one thing. I didn't ask him to recant his positions, nor did I offer to recant mine. I don't think either of us ever will, and I think it's wise to admit that. I can admit when someone is good at their craft without condoning their behavior outside of it. It's not going to change the universe, I'm sure, but it's an offering meant to tip the scales in favor of truce. That's all it is. You say, let's call it a truce and I'll buy you a beer in front of the whole bar. I'm not sorry for anything I've said, and I'm sure Ian's not sorry for what he said. So you clap them on the back and offer them a beer. You have a truce like gentlemen. You stop the insults and attacks and you respect a difference of opinion, along with a gesture of goodwill. That's all. Maybe this is too brash and forward, but I'm a loud American Yank with loud ideas and loud opinions. Sorry for that, but the sentiment is still sincere.
