So, I have wound a DVD where Richard Ross explains his 3 ring routine and I would want to know does he use normal key ring or locking key ring? I don't want to get DVD that has a routine that uses gimmick that costs ALOT! Thanks.

I am not certain which DVD you are referring to but Richard Ross never used a locking key in his six ring routine which incorporated the three ring sequences.

I learned Richard Ross's moves from his "Greater Magic Video Library" DVD from Steven's Magic Emporium. The routine did not require a locking ring.
I've heard that he did use a locking ring at one time, but none of his signature moves require it. I've been doing a routine based largely on his work for years, no locking ring, and I feel his work is definitely worth studying. Have fun!

RJH,
This is the manufacture of Richard Ross's Linking Rings. Very - Very Expensive. He does make a locking 11" ring apon inquiry and request. One Ring cost $46.00 per ring, Key Ring costs $131.00 per key ring, Locking Key price apon inquiry, but considerably more expensive. $223.00 plus postage for 2 rings and 1 key ring. |

Richard Ross had the most beautiful Linking Ring act I have ever seen...pure elegance...and he moved very, very, very s l o w l y.......THAT SOLD the illusion of the rings "melting" through each other.
When I met Dai Vernon and stayed up all night with him two nights in a row talking Magic During The Faucett Ross Magic Fest in St. Joseph, Missouri, I asked The Professor who he believed did the best Linking Rings he had ever seen, and he replied..."Without a doubt...Richard Ross". I also asked The Professor about using a locking Key Ring VS. an Open Key Ring and he told me that he thought the idea itself of a locking key ring was, in his words..."Clever but stupid." Vernon told me that when the Linking Rings are performed correctly, no one in the audience would even suspect, let alone "see" an Open Key Ring. Regarding using a locking key ring for linking rings: I'm not so sure it's a good idea, personally...in my experience an "open" key ring makes for a much better, smoother presentation. Having said that, if I needed one...I would definitely go with Joe Porper's... Joe makes THE BEST stuff...not the cheapest, mind you, but THE BEST. |

Bill, are you talking about Owen magic for the rings ?
Richard Ross USED a locking ring when we performed his 6 ring routine for steven magic. He also used it for his FISM act. You can see the entire act here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrNewlK_W68 However you don't need it to perform the routine. It's just used at 2 moments to show the rings freely. By the way he don't talk about it on the dvd. He just explain a 3 ring routine. If you want to learn more about the rings and about Ross' fism act Levent's dvd are the best. |

The rings Ross used were not from Van Dokkum but from another company. I don't remember the brand but I'm certain that it was not Van Dokkum.
Unfortunately one ring from him costs €50 ->$65 and $130 for a locking key. However I think the Owen's rings are better for some reasons. But they are even more expensive... |

To the best of my knowledge, Mr. Ross used four 10" inch rings in his act: 2 singles, 1 Key and one Locking Key made by Merv Taylor.

Auke van Dokkum states on his site, Richard Ross used 11" rings, I have not check my Richard Ross book to see what he said he was using, I do remember him commenting on it in his book.
Good luck at getting anything made by Owen's, seems they are out of the magic business. Everything I have asked about, they just tell me they have no plans on making. I would imagine Les Smith is rolling over in his grave at this poor attitude of treating magic customers. |

I didn't know about Owen's business. It's sad because I heard nothing but good things about their stuffs.

Levent, yes, I did not think of that, but I heard that Auke made a lot of the props for winners of those FISM competitions. I don't know anything about him, I just figured he was like a 100 years old. LOL
As far as Owen Magic, no one on the Café has commented buying an Owen set of rings in the last 10 years I have been on The Magic Café, they all get second hand rings. There is a lot of discussion to buy only Owen rings, but I have not read about one person that actually purchased a set from the hounding recommendations. |

Auke is a great craftsman. He did some custom work for me a few years back.

The six ring routine that Richard Ross taught on the Stevens Video did not mention a locking key as best I can recall. If he used it in performance, he certainly didn't in the explanation section. I do a six ring routine with a standard key which is taught in my book and performed and explained on the companion DVD.

Indeed he used it in performance but not a word in the explanations. The 6 rings routine is explained in his book but not a word about a locking key.

So does anybody know any details of the locking key Ross used? I've heard that it had a unique method of opening and closing, but haven't been able to find anyone who could give any actual details about this unique locking key.

I do not know which locking ring Richard Ross used, but bought one from Auke and it was excellent. I had previously used a locking key from a company called Mid-America Magic and was looking for a locking ring like their's that could be done with one hand. Auke's is very secure and can be done with one hand.
The only negative I can say about Auke van Dokkum's rings is the sound they make when you have two rings linked and want to drop one onto to the other. They don't ring like the Owen Rings do. Everything else about them is terrific - in fact, I sold my Owen rings to buy the Auke van Dokkum rings. Ron |
