The title says it all.
I'd put one of those sad faces up here if I knew how to do that, but I don't. |

Their standrad shipping is still very low ( they don't screw you on shipping ). 1 item is $4.95. I just threw $50 dollars of magic in the cart to see what would happen and the shipping was only $5.95. Another $20 and it ships free. lol.
Their prices are low, you can get free shipping or pay a small amount, they ship fast, etc. They're still #1 for me. |

But I was thinking about it all day long, and I caved in and put together my order. Two items- one for $24.99, and the other for $49.99 (Glance). That came out to $74.98- just 2 cents short! I am not going to buy another $10 or $15 item that I don't really want, and, sorry- I don't want to pay the $5.95 if I don't have to. I originally saw both of these items on Vanishing, Inc's website. One for an even $25, the other for an even $50. Free shipping over $40. I actually moved over to Penguin to make the purchase! If Penguin raised both prices by 1 cent, my shipping would have been free! So Vanishing, Inc gets my order tomorrow. They promise to ship within 24 hours. Now I'm $5.93 better off. The $5.95 is NOT a big deal, but I got used to the free shipping. Only 3 or 4 or 5 months ago free shipping was for $40. So two price increases in less than a half year. What can I say? |

I'm going to be honest, I bought a lot more at penguin when their free shipping was at $25 than when it was at $50, and I think I'll probably buy a little less now that it's at $75. That's not me "taking a stand" against them in any way. It's just (my) human nature. When it was at $25 I would make many more impulse purchases. If a DVD looked interesting I'd pick it up right away. But when the cost of shipping is calculated in, it tends to put the sad trombone noise on my impulse purchase.
I'm only one data point, of course, so it may end up making more economic sense for them overall. |

That's sad. I would have understood going to 50$ in this economy, the amount is going to discourage some purchases for sure. I hope they didn't raise this after reading all the positive things we said here in a different thread.

Wow, thanks for all the helpful feedback guys! I love it. We're here to serve YOU after all.
I didn't realize what a downer this was! Well, I got together with the team just now. We held 12 consecutive meetings about free shipping (all within 5 minutes) and firmly decided to keep the free shipping minimum at $50 for good LONG time. Man.. did I mention how much I love you guys? Acar |

I agree 100%, Magicsquared! The increase from $40 to $50 brought down my number of purchases- I was almost a weekly buyer! Certainly 3 times a month for a not-essential-to-survival-in-the-real-world item. This will control me even more!

Darn it, Acar- there you go again! Messing with my head!
Well, since I missed today's shipping cut off, I'll have to sleep on it overnight. I'm sure that you will hear from me tomorrow, though. |

BatsMagic performed his own magic for EVERYONE and got the free shipping lowered.
Atica, Atcia, Atica...power to the people.... Thanks Bats! Thanks Acar! You made it sound like Penguin is everyone's shop, not just the folks that own it. |

Not like you're just ranting on Twitter about the new peanut butter used in Uncrustables and how it's too grainy or something -- like you're just yelling into the void. It just feels like a very modern way of doing business, and one that I think is good for both the consumer and the company. |

Wow, I thought I'd seen it all. But look what I was just forwarded.
From: Acar@penguinmagic.com To: all-staff@penguinmagic.com Subject: Brilliant idea! Hey guys... I've got a wonderful idea. Let's raise the price-point of free shipping to $75, then when people complain we'll lower it back to $50. Then people will be like, "Oh, penguin, you're so good to us." It's good publicity and it doesn't cost us a cent. Then tomorrow, let's raise the price of a thumbtip to, like, $114. And when everyone is like "What the f---!" We'll be all, "Okay, okay, we'll lower it back to a dollar," and we'll be heroes again! Cool? Cool. Btw, we have a company softball game Tuesday night. Make sure to get there early enough to give us time to sacrifice a goat on the pitching mound. I am NOT going to let us lose this winning streak to those slobs at Daytona Magic, and we'll need all the help we can get from our beloved Lucifer, Foul-Fiend, Angel of the Bottomless Pit. Hail Satan. Acar |

I too noticed yesterday that the purchase price for free shipping went up. I added Deluxe Nest of Wallets by Nick Einhorn (which costs $55) to my cart and when I went to checkout I was surprised to see that I didn't have a free shipping option. Then I went to the Shipping Options page located here: http://www.penguinmagic.com/about/shipping and noticed that it said, "FREE Standard Shipping on ALL orders shipping to USA over $75!" Not sure when that change took place, but I was also bummed to see it. I absolutely love Penguin and have been a loyal customer of theirs for years, but I must admit that I ended up not placing the order with them because of this. Bats, thanks so much for bringing this up and Acar, thank you so much for listening to your customers and for making adjustments based on our feedback. Can't tell you how much we appreciate it!!
By the way, Acar you mentioned that the free shipping minimum was lowered back down to $50, but I thought I should let you know that the Shipping Options page hasn't been updated yet to reflect this change. |

So now that I know, whenever I buy something for $49.99, I will DEFINITELY add a catalog to my order! Or 2 catalogs when I buy two things for $24.99. What an easy solution! I can't tell you how many times I was a nickel short of free shipping, since most things end in .99 or .95, and went and bought a coin purse or something like that to get the free shipping. Who knew? I would advise all Penguin customers to pay attention to this little ordering gem! |

One more thing, Acar- I honestly appreciate what you did. I understand that it's really not easy to offer free shipping unless you reach a certain price level. Some do it (PHP at any price level; Vanishing, Inc at $40); some don't do it at all.
Since you did that for me and the others here, I am going to place an order tomorrow for at least $74.99 (I'm going to get one catalog also!), and I'm going to try and add another item that I want, which would have gotten me my free shipping anyway. The $74.98 is what I was going to get anyway, but I did say that I was going to give it to Vanishing tomorrow. Now you are getting the order. And I'm going to see what else I can add just to show my appreciation and let you know that you did a good thing. I'm going to PM you with my name and address, Acar, just so you know that I'm not full of hot air! |

I emailed Penguin and they responded the free shipping option was now at $75.00 and told me to buy more. I then noticed that the advert was changed to $75.00. That ticked me off a little. They should have at least honored my order since it was their mistake. Anyway I relented and added to my order to meet the requirements. Now they drop it back down... I DON'T FEEL THE LOVE.. just sayin!
