Is there any DVDs about cane manipulation (Appearing and disapearing)?

Not manipulation as such, but move and trick one can do with the canes. Nothing on DVD, except Fantasio's Cane and Candle Lectures.
Books Fantasio Cane and Candle book from Fantasio. Walsh Cane Routines from Rice Silk King Studio. There as another one also, can't remember the name of it. |

Other than Fantasio's DVDs that Bill mentioned, there is nothing in the way of a DVD that I can think of devoted solely to vanishing and appearing canes. You can see Fantasio performing his one-hand cane to silk at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH_GuO8p8MQ However, if you'd like to learn a really _great_ one-hand vanishing cane, IIRC Richard Ross's Greater Magic DVD has a very nice explanation of a cane to silk with one hand plus some variations (cane to large silver ball; cane to miniature cane) http://dennymagic.com/store/greater-magi......950.html N.B. The Ross one-hand vanish has to be an opening effect. But to me that's not a real drawback, because the logical place to do a cane vanish/transformation is the first few seconds of an act. You enter a place holding a cane and you pick up a cane to leave a place. It never quite made sense to me to pick up a cane in the middle of an act and do something with it--unless maybe you use the cane as a magic wand? There's a lot of good material on the Ross DVD that would make its acquisition a good decision--not the least of which is his award-winning linking ring routine. Is there a reason why you won't consider a book like Fantasio's _My Canes and Candles_? http://dennymagic.com/store/my-canes-and......886.html ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Since both Sonny and Bill have already mentioned Fantasio DVD lectures here are other DVDs that cover cane routines:
Mahka Tendo special lecture - Canes Fabien Solaz - La Magie des Cannes ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0SbvafO-EQ ) King Coffee - Manipulation of Stage Magic Sugaya - Magi Pala lecture ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpG16swdG......index=21 ) Jei Min - 3 Color canes ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tg-zrkUE6ac ) Scott Cervine- Award winning lecture (there is a part with canes) George Honda`s cane lecture regards, Bojan |

One more good book source for appearing cane tips is John Moehring's _A Texan Trixter_ where John explains some of the outstanding appearing cane ideas that were a feature of his act on the Ed Sullivan Show. The book is out of print but worth a search among the used magic dealers. The appearing cane was a running gag in John's act, and the first time I saw it on the Sullivan show back in the 60's I thought to myself:
"That's $12.50 x 4 !!!" (I just checked the US Inflation Calculator website, and $12.50 back in 1963 would be over $90.00 today, just for the cane running gag--probably more since you would likely have to pay collector prices for either Walsh or Harrakhan canes!) Among the other routines in his book, you'll find John's "Long Pour Salt Routine." Ed was very impressed with John's routine and as John walked offstage, Ed shook his hand and jokingly(?) said to him: "You'll have to teach me how to do that!" ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

I know Fantasio had a VHS of his lecture notes because I was in it. It was taped about 25 years ago at the Magic Castle and I could be heard asking questions as I used his products a lot. I don't know if it was converted to DVD or not. There was some good tips in that lecture.

I have just been notified it will be delivered within the next 2 weeks, I will try to review it after viewing. I like some of his moves and handlings with his props, so it should be fun to learn some new ideas.

JOHN MOEHRING!!! If my memory bank is functioning, John was the youngest magician to appear on Ed Sullivan. I believe he was 18 or 19!

Received the King Coffee DVD today, not bad service for coming all the way from China, only 7 days.
My 1st impression is that this is a DVD everyone that does manipulation should own and watch several time. The DVD is totally in Chinese language, with Chinese subtitles only at certain points. Some English words are on screen for the chapter identification. Why should everyone own this? The most important thing a person will get is different ideas on how to handle props. Body movement and hand and arm gestures are total different then anyone has ever used on stage. Even though it is totally in Chinese, you can understand every part of each explanation of each move described. The DVD is professionally done in a studio, and is well assembled and edited to explain everything. There is split screen and picture in picture effects that get up close for finger position and visual description of each effect. The material is kind of like demonstration of the props China manufactures and sells. Almost all the props can be purchased from the eBay China dealers. I like the ingenuity of this young mans thinking, as he makes all his gimmicks/holders out of paper clips, magnets, and safety pins. With just a few bends and some tape they are made. If you wanted you could make then better, but to get going, these will work fine. Now there is not any Cane routines, but there is a triple cane production and silks and the color changing streamer to canes. There is even a short rose routine. The only thing I did not care for, was the exposure of 3 tricks by El Duco Magic in Sweden. There is reel magic as well, with silks and a glove transformation to a silk. The reels are just like the name tag reels. The only negative I seen was lack of knowledge or not doing enough research on the material. An example would be, the dissolving knot in silk. The does not twirl the silk 1st thus the knot does not look correct, see Jeff McBide's explanation on this trick. He performed a silk through neck I invented myself 40 years ago. I had purchased several shoe lace thru tricks, one by U.F. Grant. It was easy to see the gimmicked shoe lace was not necessary. Thus did away with it and the effect is the same. The thing this young man did was use his neck, great idea. As all other examples were an arm of a chair, or a spectators arm. The Billiard Ball tricks are great, and will enhance anyone's current Billiard Ball routine. His 2 ball to 4 is good, but finding his silicone balls with a hard shell would be difficult and expensive having to find them, because one would have to ball all on the market in hopes to find the proper set. This should also convenience all these people that believe only the finest and most expensive Billiard Balls will work. Close up shows his balls with a big seam sticking out on each one. Yet, from a short distance away, they are not visible. His Flip Sticks routine is okay, as he goes through the moves so fast, that it does not look like magic at all. Actually, when he shows the explanation, it looks more magical as he slows down and stops at points so one can realize what they have just seen. He uses a lot of striped and colored canes in his acts. I don't care for them, but when he slows down during the explanation I see what he was trying to do. Turn a stripped silk into a stripped cane, and turn a multi-colored streamer into a multi-colored cane. Using the Color Changing black streamer to multi-colored streamer. Everyone should have this standard streamer in their magic cases, and now you can use it with a cane. Most use it with the kids coloring book trick, now it can serve another purpose. The bloopers and outtakes section will show you some of the pitfalls of prop manipulation magic. Like forgetting to fill your candle, or it is not always easy to catch 3 canes for a finale. This has so much material in it, everyone should find something they will use in their acts. None of it is what I would call hard. The hardest material, in my opinion is the Billiard moves. Everything else uses standard magic props sold on the market today. My real opinion of King Coffee's magic act, if this is his act as it, is that is a lot of small effects better suited to large or longer routines. To do jumbled material like this makes little sense. Many will enjoy and learn his transition of Billiard Ball to Rose, then his Rose vanish and re-appearance sequence is nice. Highly Recommended for all to see and do magic a little different way, then the classic handlings for these props. All of this material is workable and will suit anyone interested in show some real magic effects. Oh, this is all stage type magic, I would say it will also work in a parlour situation, if you watch your angles as you should with any type of magic. It should be just fine in a living room as well for that birthday party show. |
