Just a caveat for those who have this. I learned the hard way. There are some words on the covers and advertisements that won't work. For example the words business, England, Country and Maldives won't work. I'm sure you can stear the spectator away from these words with proper scripting but you should know this before you start performing it.

This crowd is cantankerous. Please turn the page and think of another challenging word." It should be easy to avoid the situation, as you said, with proper scripting. Asking them to look at any paragraph helps.

Hi Jan.
"...The system of long words is used in German several times, e g. in a book test by Edward Stein... I have it, and it is fantastic... Jan" I am proud to be able to say I am one of the few Edward Stein book owners. I perform also in Germany and naturally English books are not the best there, though I have yet to meet a German who does not speak English. (France is the only place where YOU MUST have a French book. "Une Ville Méconnue & Un Impaire au Féminin" I bought at Magic Dream. Paris, are excellent). I think I did maybe not put my words correctly, I did not refer to the LONG word system but to the SHORT word BEFORE the long word system that GLANCE incorporates. The idea to have difficulty with the short word after which your contact with the spec is "established" is just incredibly clever. I have not been able to find that in any other book tests I have. Falls es das bei Edward Stein gibt ist mir das entgangen. Kaarlo von Freymann Helsinki Finnland

Kaarlo, now I got you. Yes, you are right, that was new to me too (and is it clever!). And BTW, I am not going to incorporate a French test in my show . Jan

Hi Steve,
You are correct that the words you mention do not work, but I have not yet had a problem with those as I stress, "Try to choose a really long an difficult challenging word ... and by the way in case there happens to be a very short word in front of your chosen word, memorize that also so that I can try with an easy word to start with" At least to a Finn the ones you mention do not fulfill that request so every time until now I got one of the "good" ones. Mike Ince'a advice is also very clever. Thank you, I will apply that also as an extra safeguard. Kaarlo von Freymann Helsinki Finland

Great ideas gentlemen - many thanks for sharing wisdom.
I have a question - does anyone know creator Steve Thompson personally or familiar with his work in Ireland? Just curious - this guy is quite clever indeed. Out of what seems liker the blue he creates one of the nicest magazine/book tests ever. I'm impressed. I have been honored to have received some email communication from him and I know he is extremely happy with the overwhelming response from all of you.

Quote: this would be good if country were the only word but there are a number of them in advertisements and the cover itself. I think you should stear them towards a paragraph with text. You really can't tell them to think of any word in the magazine without taking some risk. If they look at an advertisement there is a decent chance they will choose a wrong word. This already happened to me after only several trials.

Quote: Kaarlo I may have to move to Finland. I think you're asking for potential problems unless you stear them away from choosing advertisements. I haven't counted but there are at least a number of advertisements as well as cover pages with the wrong words. Check them out.

This can actually work out as an advantage as personally, I don't like asking them to flip through the book/mag to make sure that its "normal". (Just a personal preference) This way, you can ask them to flip through the mag and find an article they like then choose the word (obviously you would script it properly) This way they get a chance to check out the mag without having to ask them straight up to do so. 100% agree with Darren.
Just ask the spec to choose ANY large word - ANY article - ANY page. I've not encountered any issues with the ads - some of which do contain the targets. But I prefer the way the ads were done as they look legit and don't overuse or make obvious what should not look obvious. They struck a perfect balance. There's really no need to tiptoe around as the choice is as fair and without many constraints. I also agree witrh Darren that it makes no sense to ask the spec to make sure the magazine is normal - that should be assume. Walks like a duck... Duck.

Someone (on this thread or another one ) brought up the question whether it might be possible to persuade Vanishing Magic to sell a bunch of Glance magazines at a special price those who have bought the 2 magazine version of Glance to enable them to do the destructive "tear the page" routine which will set you back only 1 $ in TrueTest. In the instructions of Glance you are encouraged to contact http://www.vanishingincmagic.com. Bu that never works. Either my PC has a bug or we have found the first thing Glance did not do 100 %. Anything on Google - and there is a lot - inclucing Vanishing Magic leads nowhere.
Has anyone had better luck ? Kaarlo von Freymann Helsinki Finland

Kaarlo-
Do the link without that final period and it will connect you just fine.

I doubt that Vanishing will discount extra editions of these for current owners since the existing price is already pretty low.
***Hint for remembering the targets: make yourself some flash cards with the words on the back, and a single letter on the front - just like in school. I think this is is a good way to learn 'em.

Just ordered, can't wait to get.

Steven,
You will not be disappointed. I'm sure it will be your best purchase of 2013 so far (considering only one week has passed). Enjoy, Tony |

An EASTER EGG HUNT!
Someone posted on the "Latest and Greatest" thread yesterday that they found TWO words in their Glance magazines that shouldn't have been there. I searched page by page last night and could NOT find the words he claimed anywhere: CORPORATIONS INDUSTRIES My theory is the spec either forgot their word... OR... They decided to screw with the performer. I PM'd him asking for specific page #'s where he saw these words...just wondering if anyone else can confirm or refute this?

I read his post as a hint, not as revealing the words themselves....assumed he meant the ads regarding corps. and industries.

He said that the spe4c chose those words - messing things up I think.
Someone just said that those words are on the covers... Need to check that when I get home. If so then we aren't asking people to choose a cover word, but a long word from any article or ad.
