I am wondering if anyone know any fun card games with just normal playing cards. As I think a fun card game is a not only provide good entertainment, but also a good way for me to bring out the playing cards, and prepare for some magic afterwards. Me and my friends often gathered and play board games, but no one really know any good playing card games. So please share if you have any games you know.
I will start from what I found: "Oh, Hell" 3-7 people, a trick-taking game. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oh_Hell "Poker" 2-10 people, gambling game, but requires poker chip "Crazy eights", like UNO, but less fun in my opinion

You could play hearts. (4 players)
My personal favorite is kemps (4 players) Spit is fun but is two players only (like speed only the cards are set up like solitaire. But with 5 piles instead of 7) |

Good question!
I`m thinking Johnny Thompson`s Do As I Do. Impromptu, regular cards & any amount of people can play. Has a magical surprise ending when you are tired of playing. Will do some research for more games. Have fun, John
Nothing is better than more.

You might consider "Go Fish", if it's not too advanced for your crowd.

Even then, if you are doing this as a way to introduce magic I would question it because do you want the focus ultimartely to be on the magic or is it incidental? If it's incidental, then why not just show your friends some new effects during your regular gaming sessions during breaks? Obviously for actual paid performances, a card game seems to make little sense, so I will guess that you mean just casual magic performances. I guess I am not understanding the correlation between games and magic in this particular instance. As for board games, friends and I would play Talisman, Runebound, Arkham Horror, and other types of games that would not be considered mainstream. So I am assuming you mean more casual board games like Monopoly and stuff like that? I do apologize but your post has me confused. Another thing to consider: if you need a reason to bring out the cards to do magic and your friends KNOW you are a magician, then why do you need justification at all? Moreover, maybe they don't WANT to see any magic on a given day. If I am misunderstanding please do correct me but except for approaching a table in a walkaround gig at a restaurant, there shouldn't be a need to find excuses or strategies to be able to perform. In my very humble opinion it damages the integrity of the art. I am also a musician and at casual affairs, if people want me to perform, I will say no. If they insist - and if they have a keyboard of some type - I will do one or two songs and that's it. So my apologies if I am misunderstanding your point, but having said that, magic should never be secondary. If people want to see it, they will ask. Or, if you want to show a new routine to test it before you perform it for strangers, friends are very accomodating - just don't overdo it. Even friends will tire of the magic. Namaste, Vlad |

Hi Vlad, sorry for the confusion. I am just wondering what I could do with friends with playing cards, such as card games, besides showing them magic.

This site may be the best fit for people who are already familiar with some basic card games, but it is a cultural treasure trove of games played with regular cards:

!@#$%^&*/Cheat (depending on who you're with) is great fun, but I'm not very good at it...
Rummy is really good, but make sure everyone knows which rules you're using. Snap/Irish Snap (I live in NI, so they call it Irish Snap and add a few rules). Tbh, unless you're doing a gambling-style effect, magic and card gamesare pretty different, and shouldn't normally be mixed. Something that is really cool, but will take a while to learn, is The Myth by Ben Train. Once you've set it up, you can play whatever games with the deck all night, and then do a cutting-to-the-aces effect with the very same deck, so no one will suspect anything. |

Cards are designed for gaming and always have been. This is their primary use, therefore it is totally logical to incorporate games (or elements of them) into our magic. This doesn't have to be restricted to gambling demos either. IMHO, many card magicians don't know enough about card games considering they carry a deck around with them most of the time! This is very odd if you stop and think about it. Anyway, I must get back on topic! Here is another useful online guide to many of the more popular card games: http://boardgames.about.com/od/cardgames/Card_Games.htm Hope this helps, Marty |

Actually. I think it might be very foolish indeed to show a gambling style affect after a card game.
Especially if you just won the card game! I suppose this would differ between friends, but when I play card games with my family I'm often accused of heating after a victory. (And my magic is usually pointed to.) |

Thank you for all your inputs. Marty, I agree with you too. I remember one time when me and some friends gather once, and we were just so bored, and middle of thye table is my deck of cards.. just wished then I know some games.. after all, it's called playing card for a reason.
I think bull **** would be a fun party game, the rule is simple, and yet I could see the game could get crazy. Will try it out next time I have no problem with gambling games also, but those requires poker chips usually. I am particularly looking for games using just a deck of cards.

I know that cards were, and are still, designed for gaming, and it is logical to talk about them together, but if you start mixing them too much, people start treating magics as a game, where the objective is to catch you out, which is less fun all round in my opinion. It also depends on who you tend to perform for; for instance, I'm a student and magic is just a hobby for me, so most of my friends/audiences tend to assosciate cards with drinking games, not poker of the like, which can be nicely incroporated with a discussion about odds.
Try Extreme Cheat/Bull S. Basically the same, but any method of disposing of your cards is allowed, such as handing them to someone walking past, hiding them in your shoes, etc. That can get strange. |

Interesting question, as I primarily (actually nearly solely) focus on gambling demonstrations I sometimes perform a quick game with two spectator so that everyone has an idea about how it is played and the general rules. I also carry around one of the bicycle hand ranking cards you sometimes get so that they have an idea of approximate odds in winning the hand.
It's also quite funny, when playing poker with my friends I use the protocol that scarne wrote about in his biography. |

At the risk of sounding like a cranky old man, back in my day everyone played cards. I'm only 49, but I remember my parents belonging to multiple bridge groups, my father played poker with his friends at least once a month, as a family we played rummy, etc. In college, I played hearts, euchre, poker, spades, and more. My wife and I play canasta, cribbage and other games with friends. I already know bridge is a dying game, but it sounds like other card games are slowly fading as well, if my hunch about Bicycle Rider's age is correct, and he is representative of the rest of his age group. I just don't think people get together and play cards all that much anymore. Bicycle Rider, don't let these rich card games die! Learn some of the games I, and others, have listed, and teach them to your friends. You won't regret it! - Bob |
