Today I bought some white glue, but just wondering, do you just give it a tiny dip and let it dry on newspaper or something??? Or do you soak it all night?
Thanks |

Dip - shape with fingers - hang over the back of a kitchen chair to dry.

For a more permanent "whipping" for "magic" rope (called "kernmantel" in the rope trade--German word to describe rope with a core of strands and a woven "sheath")here is a method that the late Roy Kissell showed me about 25 years ago. He got it from June Horowitz (first lady pres. of IBM) June got it from a young magician at a convention--she couldn't recall whom. I put it in my lecture for awhile, and it was well received. I use the Nightmare, (bought it from Gene Gordon for $1.00 in 1959) and as part of the routine, the kids are allowed to hold the ropes. I've used the SAME ROPE SET for many seasons (wash them weekly).
I hope I can make this clear--it's really VERY SIMPLE. First, trim end of rope neatly. Next, pull out about 1" if the core and cut it off. Now, "milk" the sheath back so that there is a "hollow" 1". Now with a nail file, or similar tool (I've even used a small screw driver)tuck the sheath back inside the "hollow". Start with just a few strands of sheath, and go "round and round" (PATIENCE!!!)when all the sheath is tucked inside, roll the end of the rope between your fingers to "set" the tucked in ends. You may have to occasionally tuck in a stray strand or two, but it's basically a "permanent" whipping. The ends of the whipped rope will be slightly larger in diameter, but not particularly noticeable. I like this because some glues tend to turn yellow. If you have a problem, PM me and I'll try to help. Yr's, 'til the thread breaks!

Dick I've read people using this method too, but adding some safety by dropping a little bit of glue inside the hole. Even if it yellowed a bit you won't see it as it is inside, but the glue is just here to make sure that it won't get untucked.

If you do just as Dick suggested and then sew through the ends just a couple of times with a matching thread color and the ends will never peek out. A few more times through and you'll see that if you work around the end evenly and with a little tension you reduce the appearance of the bulge.
This makes the ropes washable and a sleight weight at the end of the ropes (which is a natural outgrowth of this method) is very beneficial for a number of effects (such as "The Mosquito" or "Toss a Knot"). Never wash a cotton rope directly before a show as they shrink and stiffen somewhat and need to be "broken in" after a wash. -Mary Mowder |

I've had excellent results with your basic, good ol' Elmer's glue over the years. I simply take the frayed end, squirt a dab of Elmer's on it, roll it around between thumb and index finger till psmooth and even to the eye, then drape it over something and let it dry over-night. Presto! Perfect results that hold for countless performances.

In fact, you can't unravel them even if you try.

If you don't roll the half dry Elmer's glue ends between your thumb and for finger it will dry lumpy and catch on both your clothes and itself.
