Hi,

I bet many of you are magic hoarders... especially we bizarre types... so, as mentioned, finishing redoing my office and have the chance as I start putting things back into - to actually start cataloging it all and where everything can be located...

Can any of you recommend a good library/museum like software program you might already be using? Or how do you keep track of it all?

Kindest regards,

Swimming in tomes, artefacts and ancient mummies

Why not set up an online gallery of photos instead?

Set yourself up a page on facebook, marked private...and just snap away via your phone and upload and label them?

If you have a bit of computer know-how.. (not much needed) check out an application called FILEMAKER PRO - you can design your own database

Granted you can do this with MS Access, but Filemaker is easier and more adaptable/flexible.

I've heard great things about Bento which is a simpler version of Filemaker (from the same developers I believe), and therefore very user friendly.

I've used FilemakerPro at work. While very user friendly as far as database programs go, there is a significant initial learning curve, and if you don't keep creating databases, its easy to forget how to set a new one up.

MS Access is evil incarnate. While very powerful, it is the very opposite of user friendly (at least it was a few years ago...i haven't touched it since).

Also, Bento and FileMakerPro can be accessed via an iPhone app. Bento is probably your best and least expensive-but-most-bang-for-your-buck way to go. Please let us know how you make out with it.

Very spooky!! Just yesterday I began creating a database of my own magic hoard.

Now, please realise I'm utterly obsessive and a hopeless linux geek: I created a mySQL database.

The database I designed allows me to enter the obvious things (book vs. DVD, monkey's hand vs. haunted oil lamp, etc., mentalism vs. magic), but also dialogue, suggested patter, a list of routines or effects, photos, and where the darn thing is (most likely) physically kept (which is important for me as every bookshelf, cupboard, closet, drawer, secret passage, etc. in my house contains some magic-related item). If the entry is an ebook or downloaded video, I can give a link to it too. Being a true database, complex searches are easy. The database took some thought and is still evolving, but since we all have things that we find in the bottom of a box and ask "What is this thing?", it should help jog the memory. If I'm looking for a particular effect, I can search the database for ideas.

If you are willing to put some little effort into creating a database, you are miserly (mySQL is freeware), and willing to step up the learning curve a little, you can create you own custom database. I'm happy to share my programming ideas with anyone, just PM me.

I believe that mySQL may be installed on most OS's, even the one that casts the Evil Eye (spit-spit) in our direction.

Hey Yitzhak - I'm too lazy Smile

Bento seems cool so long as you are Apple user (I am) - then you can sync ipad/iphone/Imac together... it has been updated to let it make all sorts of things including embedding video/photos/voice memos and customized fields-plus I found a community where people make up templates for sharing. Seems they wanted to increase its power slightly so Bento is designed for very small businesses at this time...

TH1 - for sure I'll keep you updated!

If you hate typing use Dragon dictation app on your phone to dictate titles. Copy to notepad and email them to yourself. Copy to filemaker.

You will like Bento - as others mentioned, its a simplified port of Filemaker Pro. I am a Filemaker developer, so it's second nature to me. Both Bento and FMP have Apple and PC versions. Both have Iphone ability which is nice. You won't be disappointed with Bento!
