Teddy Roosevelt addressed the Rough Riders at discharge in New York . Told them that even the 3 companies that did not make it to Cuba, were just as dedicated as those that did. That NDM Makes you a Vietnam Vet Bob. Not all that served did it "in country". Luck of the draw.
There are some on this forum that "hid out", while 68,000+ of those that served, never got their chance to be a work in progress. Long story, but I did 3 years at Andrews AFB(yep as a sailor). A great stocked base lake, trout and catfish. You Zoomies really know how to build a base.

Peter, we're you on the Kitty Hawk in 85 when it went over that Russian sub off Korea during Team Spirit?
I was manning the command post at Osan at the time. |

I enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17 in 1963. My military service number was 770-49-66. I spent three years in the Navy, and reached the rank of ETR3 (E-4). I spent a year on the USS Forestal CVA-59 (before the big fire), and I took an around the world 9 month cruise on the USS Manley DD 940, with three months of off shore bombardment off the coast of Vietnam. I kissed pretty girls in about 10 different countries, never got VD, and I received an honorable discharge.
Bob Cassidy I'm very jealous of you I wish I had been a CT, because they got such choice duty.

Tony, nope, in '85 I was at NAS Fallon NV VFA-125 Det. I can imagine the scramble thought. Kitty Hawk always seemed to be running over something.
Middle of the Pacific in May '75, GQ was called and flying squad away after she ran over what was said to be a log. Flooded one compartment. Really? Must have been a heck of a log! We were always playing tag with the Russian trawlers and subs at that time. Rumor had it a sub came up under us and got to close. They liked to play as much as we did. Osan must have been nice. I got to Busan/Pusan for Coral Sea's '83 World Cruise. Best thing about them cruises were all the food I got to try. Spoiled me though, the American versions never came close afterwards.

Ah, the Forestal fire. Big E had one. Midway. I was on Nimitz in '81 the night the EA6B crashed. Lost two from our squadron VF-84. 14 all tolled. One good thing, all burn casualties that made it to the Texas Burn Center lived. Thank goodness for fire fighting training. When it happened, it was all automatic for me. No 911 at sea. At least there did not use to be.
At the risk of being confrontational, the black shoes ran a good ship. But Naval Aviation is the way to fly. ;D

Black shoes, deck ape eh, I love it. An airdale stupidity, can only be surpassed by an oil covered snipe.

That's the stakeholders of the US military: US taxpayers. The goal of the military is to save the taxpayers money and this is achieved by preventing the costs of war while on the same token keeping the nation safe, secure and safeguarding American interests. Part of a strategy of prevention of the costs of war involves deterrence; which deterrence requires some investment by the US taxpayer in the military. However, military power has to be used wisely as well, otherwise, the unwise use of military power can become very very costly to the taxpayer. One of the things I have noticed with politicians though was on many occasions they have ignored good military advice from their military generals serving underneath (this is not always the case though). I know I watched a documentary where Johnson ignored the advice from the military not to get involved in Vietnam because it would turn into a costly protracted conflict which he ignored that advice and deployed troops anyway (he probably felt it was important to deploy troops to Nam at the time because of treaty obligations and no I am not trying to start a hot button topic, just point out that on many occasions politicians seemed to have ignored advice from the military when on some occasions they probably should not have). I also read about several cases where the military advised politicians against spending money on some military programs or new weapons systems because those programs were not needed and wasted taxpayer money, yet, the politicians ignored this advice and spent taxpayer money on such programs anyway. I reckon some of the lobbyists had a hand in getting politicians to ignore good military advice and spend money on those programs so that the defense companies that they lobbied on behalf of could make money.

On the other hand, it's a good thing that Kennedy didn't follow the advice of his military commanders during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
