Joe:
Thank you for your very thorough review. I did not mean to open a can of worms regarding Oz's fans and his detractors. Seems to me the same arguments were being made around this time last year with the pro-Ellusionist vs. the anti-Ellusionist camps. All I wanted was a simple review, which I now have. Thank you once again. Maybe I should start a new thread where everyone can discuss the merits/shortcomings of OZ....... |

Hey Guys,
I find it strange how a lot of people don't like the idea of hyping. This DVD is aimed at beginners and the only thing that hyping does for beginners is excite them. I think it's great that people are getting excited about magic. It means that they'll actually WANT to learn routines and become the best they can. I get excited when I find a routine in an old book that I had missed, create a new improvement on an existing sleight, and yes, even when a new release comes out that gets my attention. It is the reason that I study magic, EXCITEMENT! Those of us who already know the basic slights on this DVD will obviously not get excited by the hype. I just wish those people who aren't interested in it, would spend their effort in finding something that DOES excite them and their magic. I don't own this DVD and am not a particular fan of Oz, but I think it's unfair to judge this DVD based on originality or creativity. That is not what it is aimed at. Tyler Wilson |

I can't believe it took almost three pages of posts to finally get to a review. Thanks Joe for that review. The topic up to that point sounded like a Blaine discussion.. "I hate" I love I hate I love.. shut up.. no you shut up.
But thanks to you, it seemed to go back on course. Ahhh.. the world is right once again (grin). John |

JoeKing-THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! As a newbe to card magic with really no skills after I've hit them with my stripper deck routines I have been looking for a good visual DVD to help me learn the basic moves etc. I have the books but do not translate well from the text descriptions to the actual moves. I was excited to see this thread thinking I could get the opinions of those more experienced than me to guide the likely only DVD purchase I could afford for awhile. Only to be greatly dissapointed by lots of vitriolic opinion without any informed reviews. And then came joeKing, and thanks once again.
To anyone else who, perish the thought, has actually viewed the DVD; could you please evaluate it from the perspective of someone new to card magic who needs/wants a visual teaching aid. I would really appreciate it. To the opinion-without data folks, I would respectfully direct your attention to some interesting threads on vent.your.spleen.com. |

There are many videos in which to hone your skills.
I would go with Encyclopedia of Card Sleights myself. This is like an Ellusionist video. |

Howdy all. After reading many posts here (yep, the classic lurker), I've finally come across a topic that I feel qualified to chime in on...
I'm a card neophyte who's looking to learn the basic skills and lay a solid foundation from which to begin. Two months ago, I purchased "The Royal Road to Card Magic," followed by Richard Kauffman's DVD, "Basic Card Technique." Typically, I find that I learn things better by reading them -- but when it comes to card magic, I've realized that having visuals definitely helps. Kauffman's DVD is dry but thorough -- sort of a mini encyclopedia for the beginning card worker. It includes no tricks -- only basic card-handling skills. (Sidenote: I've no doubt that Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights is awesome, but at $200+ for the entire set, it's a bit more than I'm able to spend at this juncture, and it probably contains much more info, to the point of overload, than I need right now, too.) So. I got the Royal Road. I got the Kaufman DVD. I began working on my overhand shuffle, pinky break, double lift, riffle force, etc. I also downloaded a few tricks from Penguin, which were taught by Oz, and I found him to be a competent, easy-to-understand teacher. I know a lot of the teenage guys at Penguin really like him (yes, Penguin certainly seems to appeal to young magicians), but hey, I'm 33 and I like Oz too. As such, when "Born to Perform" was released, I went ahead and ordered it. Due to the time constraints of everyday life (a nine-to-five job, a new wife, a basement that flooded a few days ago), I've only been able to watch it once. That said, my initial impression of the DVD was positive; I think it's a good start for the beginner in card magic. For simplicity's sake, I'll divide the DVD into three main parts: 1) card handling (controls and flourishes); 2) how-to instructions for four tricks using the controls taught in the DVD; and 3) scenes of Oz performing these tricks on the streets of Vegas. Here's my brief take on each... 1) Card handling. Not as much info here as in the Kauffman DVD, but it isn't just an abbreviated version of the Kauffman DVD either. Oz explains that the material presented here isn't meant to be seen as an encyclopedia but as an arsenal -- the key skills that he uses every day. Thanks to this DVD, I've learned some new flourishes, as well as techniques like dribbling to secure a break. Oz also teaches a double lift that I was unfamiliar with and which I like better than any double lifts I'd learned previously. 2) The tricks. Oz teaches his versions of the Ultimate Transpo, Two Card Monte, Biddle Trick and Ambitious Card. All use the skills taught in the DVD, and all are entertaining. 3) Street performances. While the tricks-on-the-street angle certainly takes its cues from the David Blaine school, it's still fun to watch, and the filmed performances create (at least for me) excitement in learning these tricks and learning the necessary controls. In a nutshell, would I buy the DVD again? Absolutely. For $29.95 and free shipping from Penguin, it's a good deal for the beginner interested in learning some basic card skills and a few tricks to boot. |

Hey Photofinish, thanks for your review. I'm looking at getting the Born To Perform DVD in the near future too. It's nice to have a balanced not overhyped review of the DVD.

Good point photofinish-- Plus at Penguin after you purchase once, you get 10% off ALL orders after that! So, the Born to Perform for me was like $26.95 plus free shipping! The DVD is definitely worth every penny-

I just received this today. It is very well produced. I have the Daryl series and I can tell you, you'd only need Oz's. Oz did a great job here.
This is one of the best DVD's I've bought.

Daryl's is a very complete set and, should be owned by any serious card man. But, it contains so much you won't use.
Oz had identified the esetial sleights a beginer needs to do $90 of the card magic out there. Combine Oz'd DVD and Ammar's Easy To Master Series and you have enough to enjoy card magic, without being confussed or scared. Oz really simplified some essential sleights. He's a great teacher!!!

Though I've been doing coin and thread magic for quite a bit, I've only recently started getting into card magic, and I think I'll buy this video. I own the first 2 volumes of Ammar's series, but honestly, Ammar isn't the most exciting teacher around, although his material is good. Oz has always seemed to keep my attention, which to me is a huge plus in being a good teacher. I agree, Oz is basically the penguin magic equivalent of Carson Daly and starburst(cough massive tool cough), but I do think he is a good teacher and I see no reason to give such negative posts about him, it's not really helpful or constructive

I too am new to cards. I was attracted by the BTP demos. Thus, I read every single post on this thread very carefully. Thanks Joeking and Photofinish for helping me to find what I believe wil be the "right" DVD for what I want to learn at this point in my magic development. Yet further proof of why this is such a great website.

What is wrong with some of you! I swear! Just because people like me and you are more advanced as far as card magic goes doesn't mean that there is a beginner out there looking to learn stuff that he will ACTUALLY USE. Many of you are speaking BAD of this dvd without even having watched it! Oz puts things in simple terms and has pretty good methods for accomplishing these VERY PRACTICAL TRICKS. Just because material is not new doesn't mean that it is useless. And if you believe that, then why are you preforming one if not all of these effects taught on the dvd!
JUST SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT FOR THOSE FIRST FEW POSTERS WHOSE MESSAGES I READ. |

Okay, I'll put in my two cents.
I just got the DVD a few days ago, knowing nothing of this thread. I'm a beginner, *again*. I toyed around with magic quite a bit about 12 years ago, learned a lot of secrets, some fundamentals, but never got good, never understood how important doing the sleights extremely well is, never understood how important presentation is, etc, and then I bought a house, got married, and promptly forgot all about magic for years. (I found computers though Anyway, I'm back into it now, and looking to start with a solid foundation - yes, even how to hold a deck properly. Sometimes I think I tend to be obssesive-compulsive about these kind of things. So, on to the DVD - I haven't watched the entire thing yet, only the first hour or so, the card sleights section, which followed the excerpts of Oz out in the streets. That first part is where people may be getting the impression that this is a bad ellusionist type video, but there's much more to it. When Oz goes into teaching the techniques, he does so very well. He's very careful to do it at speed, to do it slow, do it several times, do it from different angles, and explain what not to do as well as what is correct to do. For me, this is exactly what I'm looking for. I might very well also get the Kaufman's Basic Card Technique video as well because there is more out there, obviously, than what Born to Perform teaches. I haven't seen anything at all on the overhand shuffle, jogging, false OH shuffles, and all that good stuff, which kind of surprised me. But all in all, this is a very good DVD for beginners, or people looking for a return to basics, perhaps to correct a bad habit that arose out of learning an improper technique or something. I have yet to see the tricks and routines explained in their entirety, or the flourishes and more advanced stuff, but the basic sleights and handling were the primary reasons I bought this. Oh, and should anyone feel I am cheating myself by getting a video instead of a book, let me assure I have the books: a hardback edition of RRTCM from 1975 that I got a while back, and I also just bought Card College Vol 1. I also have a slew of other great books by Fulves, Bobo, Henry Hay, but having a video is just having another great tool - I equate it this way: If you have a magician friend who can help, and I stress "help", teach you moves, great, you can see how the moves are done in person, as a smooth and complete sequence. If you don't have a friend or tutor, the video helps to fill that void. Either way though, you're going to have books to study from if you're at all serious.
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.
