Hello Friends!
I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of Virginia Beach's regulations on busking, particularly on the boardwalk. I know they have laws against swearing, so I would't be surprized if busking isn't allowed. Thanks for any tips! ~Shane |

Hey Shane,
Va Beach has been taken over by Beach Street, Beach Street hires performers during the summer, then tells them what street they can perform on for so many hours, so busking has pretty much been killed down here. There are other cities like Norfolk or Chesapeake or Newport News & Hampton that are wide open, there is also Suffolk which is an up and booming city, used to be farmland but not any more...In these cities you can set up a table and busk to your hearts content, I've never had any problems in any of those cities, especially Norfolk, Newport News, Hampton or Suffolk.. I have occasionally done it myself (though, come to think of it, not since I switched over to solo ukulele). the problems are the hours (you're out pretty late), the other denizens of the late night streets (been threatened with a knife on two occasions) and, of course, the fact that you're going to be dealing with crowds who have had their inhibitions obliterated by their booze intake. I suspect it's a bit easier for a musician than for a magician on these pitches. musicians can deal with the trickle shows a lot better than magicians. |

Virginia Beach is a busker friendly city. True enough Beach Street hires performers. But busking is legal.

Let me shed some light on this being I just did a bunch of research and called like 12 different numbers the other day.
Busking in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and the 757 is LEGAL. However, it becomes illegal in Virginia Beach to ask for tips/hat lines. The most you can do is put a hat/box with a sign. Also, in Virginia Beach depending on where you busk (such as Virginia Beach Town Center), you may find resistance from business owners arguing that you're on their property and obstructing traffic. Hopefully this post helps any other Virginians in this area like me. |
