I'm listening to the Infinite Monkey Cage Christmas special. One of the panellists has just said that in studies in which people can complete (and cheat at) a task in one of two rooms, and one room is denoted randomly as haunted before the test begins, people cheat less in the supposedly haunted room. Does anyone have a ref? I can't find anything online.

Jon - I thought I recalled reading an article about this from a handful of years back. I found this...think it may be what you're looking for...let me know...

This was the subject of one of Derren's more poncey shows not so long ago.
Science dressed as " I'm so superior in the ways of psychology" does not a good entertainment piece make!

Think it was the religion one - having a supernatural watcher makes you behave better. Hence the 'need' for gods

That certainly seem to be the general hypothesis. If I were a Freudian I'd probably be going on about the super ego now.

That alligator puppet show (page three) sounds more than a little disturbing to me...
Only mildly related, but I recall a study that showed people were more likely to behave if there were an image of an eye "watching" them. It makes sense, I suppose. I've had friends refuse to come into my home because they felt like the paintings were watching them. (Sure enough, there were over 30 pairs of eyes in the living room alone.) |

That sounds quite nice actually.

I found it cozy! (And, at worst, I never had to worry about anyone outstaying their welcome.)
