Body Magic was written by someone named Fisher or Fischer.
It covers many of the Georgia Magnet stunts including light-heavy body (where someone can't be lifted by an obviously stronger person), the broom tests, pushing a group of people who have pinned you to the wall by your shoulders away without effort and the like. It also covers things like Aikido's Unbendable Arm stunt, full body catalepsy and other "stiff as a board" stunts. It is currently out of print, but some libraries have copies. Look around for it. It's an overlooked classic, IMPO. Lee Darrow, C.Ht.

Ok So what's the story here? If waking hypnosis works so well without doing an induction and the subject is not aware of the state, why would you ever need to do regular hypnosis?

Because the public EXPECTS it, King.
No joke, but the public buys the act more readily, as do the volunteers, if there's a formal induction process, as opposed to jumping off and doing silly and strange stuff. An induction adds credibility to the show and the visual of someone literally collapsing (safely) in their chair on stage is a very powerful image that people will carry with them for decades. Hope this helps! No flame or snideness intended. Lee Darrow, C.Ht.

Hmmmm.
Im not sure waking hypnosis can create the same effect as a show using inductions and conditioning. Sure you may get some "compliant" people going along with the programme but its not the same as a proper show. Of course I could be wrong but it isn't just about getting people to do certain stunts this is where a lot of hypnotists fall down in my opinion. Its about setting situations up and letting the develop into somethng unique to the people on the stage. Negative, positive hallucinations and complete amnesia are all part of a show. I'm not sure this can be done with waking hypnosis. I never really looked into it so I can't say for certain but I am pretty skeptical. |

Lee is right. A formal induction is not a structural requirement for obtaining hypnotic behavior, but it is very useful theatrically. At minimum it gives the volunteers an opportunity to blame their outrageous behaviors on the process of hypnosis, which is the primary tool a hypnotist has.
I have worked both ways, and both can achieve identical results in the volunteers. When working without an induction, you are still progressively increasing the demands on the spectator, you are still conditioning them, and you definitely have to change your opening lecture so that you can "explain" what is happening to the volunteers in such a way that they will comply--you're just dispensing with the "sleepy-sleepy" part of it. Having done it both ways, I find that I prefer the "sleepy-sleepy." It's just more fun! --Chris |

OK yeah I see what your saying. It would look like a giant confusing mess to the specs.

Unfortunately I don't get much opportunities these days to do hypno shows I would like to play around with this.
What it seems like to me is that there will be an induction of some kind but much more subtle than the formal theatrical sort. And you don't have key word re-induction during the presentation? Or post hypnotic suggestions? I can see how Chris thinks the usual ways is more fun... |

According to McGill in the original Encyclopedia (1947), amnesia was possible in waking hypnosis. Its covered on pages 33-34 under the inability to speak. I have not yet tried it myself as I am not yet confident enough in the script. It is something that I feel has no room for error when giving the instructions and commands as is the case with normal trance work. I tend to have your same skepticism Shrink when it comes to this, but I won't know till I try it. McGill seemed to believe it would work.
Maybe if your are Ormond McGill it does.

I, too, am interested in this DVD, but can't find it on ebay or on Bill's website. You can find his eBay auctions by searching for "hypnosis_secrets_inc" as seller.
On his website, there's an intriguing 2 hour video called C.O.V.E.R.T. Hypnosis, which sounds similar to the Waking Hypnosis DVD. http://hypnosissecrets.com/_wsn/page3.html I'll email him and ask for a clarification & report back here with any news. Teejay, here's what I heard back (in an email) about the Waking Hypnosis DVD (which isn't currently listed on eBay or at O'Connell's website, as far as I could tell). Quote:
The Amazing Power of Waking Hypnosis is now available on DVD, and you may purchase it by sending a paypal payment for $55 (including P&H) to: hypnosissecrets@aol.com. I just noticed that you're in the UK, so I'd suggest you email them first for a shipping quote. In detailing how to obtain the Waking Hypnosis DVD, I hope I haven't broken any of the rules against advertising on these forums. If so, please delete the previous post. (I was just trying to help TJ out.) |
