Anyone ever use a modern cabinet to produce Santa? Thanks.

Many times. Put a light (1"x 2") framework door hinged on the front covered with gift wrapping and a bow. Santa pops through the paper for his appearance. Always a great finish. (Go to a sewing shop and buy a "pounce wheel" to score/perforate the paper to make it easier to break through.)

Thanks, guys. I just got access to a new wood shop and was thinking ahead. Yes, for next year. But my concern was that if a rolle polle guy in a big suit could make due with 9 inches?

Consider using a thin guy with an inflatable stomach. Many Halloween costume places still have inflatable costumes that blow up with a battery powered blower. But if Santa works for you (in other words, if you don't have to use someone chosen by someone else to play Santa) you might also consider a Gift Box appearance in the floating Box. The Box has just flown in from the North Pole (so the package claims) and is still floating around when it finally settles to the ground and Santa half floats out when it is opened and has to be pulled back down to the ground before he can go into his Santa business. You'll find one version in my PVC Book 4, a variation on the Okito/Fu-Manchu Hi-Strung Illusion.

Here's a link to photos of my Sleigh Illusion and my Chimney Illusion. Both were built 10+ years ago from Paul Osborne plans (Big Black Book), and have been used to magically produce Santa many times over the years.

BTW, David, great tip on breaking out of the paper for the modern cabinet!
Thanks for the ideas, everyone. I wouldn't be in a position to pick my santa so would have to go in with the consideration of a guy in a big suit who is anything but a box jumper. Donald, beautiful job on the Osborne illusions. How does the sleigh play? The chimney, I don't know about, but it looks like two screens that you put together during the presentation to form the chimney and then you put the top on? Is that right? Jim

I built the Sleigh first, and then learned that many Santas have knee problems (because they are older). For performing, they have to kneel. So, I built the chimney next. Santa sits on a small stool inside that one, so it works better for him. I've also tried a Book of Life, because all Santa had to do was stand in that one. But I didn't really have plans for the Book of Life, so I could have done a better job on it. That prop (Book of Life) was a monster. Later on I sold it.
(I hope I'm not revealing too much.) Of the 3 Santa Illusions I've built, the Chimney Illusion is my favorite. No, the pieces for the chimney are not assembled in front of the audience. The whole prop is wheeled out at the right time, and you show it empty (smaller door with brick cut out). Then you revolve it and open it again, and Santa comes out of the larger door. Pictures 1 and 4 of the chimney, show it completely assembled. I just put a photo of the different pieces to show that I built it to break down to fit inside my van (3), along with the rest of my show. And the other photo (2) shows it partly assembled, before I put the top on. It assembles fairly quickly, using pin hinges. I have my customer provide the Santa and costume. I just need a few minutes to meet with him before the show, to coach them through the trick. So, I've worked with many different Santas. - Donald P.S. In addition to the Big Black Book, the plans were first published in Genii Magazine. The plans for both of these illusions might also be in Paul Osborne's book, "Holiday Illusions." The Sleigh Illusion and Chimney Illusion have different names in Paul's Big Black Book. One of them is called "Here Comes Santa Claus" and the other might be called "Happy Holidays".

Jim,
A short funny idea. If the frame is too small for Santa to pass through you could have Santa have make a first step through, than his stomach and just after this use the inflatable mechanism to have the audience see the stomach grow through the frame... I think this could be a funny situation for the adults. Oliver. |

I've thought a little more about this, and perhaps Jim (and maybe others) thought the Chimney Illusion worked like a Arabian Tent Illusion. It doesn't. Although Christmas versions of the Arabian Tent Illusion exist (Fairchild Magic makes one, and Creative Magic used to make one), that illusion has too many angle problems for most of the situations I perform in. I wanted illusions that could be performed in all situations, such as halls, malls, party rooms, gyms, etc. That is why I built the illusions that I did.

Donald,
I've got the Osborne xmas illusion book and have seen the sleigh in that one and I think you did a great job. It looks beautiful. I was leaning toward making the two screens production or a modern cabinet. The screens have the advantage over the cabinet that it's more flexible for getting Santa in place without much of a backstage and the cabinet could be used for other shows. Jim

Mike - The plans I used were from the Big Black Book, but I know they were published in Genii first (one a month over several years). Sorry I don't have my Genii Magazine collection here, so I can't answer your question about the two specific issues for the Sleigh Illusion and the Chimney Illusion. Most likely December issues, as that was when they published Paul's Christmas Illusion Plans. Perhaps someone else can answer your question.
Jim - If you need any tips about performing Santa production illusions, working with Santa, when and where to get him into the prop, etc., send me a PM. I don't want to reveal too much on the open forum. - Donald P.S. Dal Sanders (from Texas) is the only other performer I know who has built the Sleigh Illusion. I found this out when I saw him post this video on Facebook. Although from looking at it, I can see that he built it differently than I did. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukri6h8KfL0

Mike -
Is it the Sleigh Illusion that you found in that issue of Genii, and was the illusion called "Here Comes Santa Claus"? - Donald

Don't forget Bryce's Screen - very portable, takes a big load - by decorating it as a background piece, putting it on a large dolly, it can work like a charm.
Also when we used to do Santa reveals for malls we would use our "thin actor' made up as Santa for the reveal and then switch this Santa for their Santa (going through the backdrop curtain on the stage) as he made his way off the stage. Malls typically have access to a few similar Santa suits so there was no added expense. In this regard we used everything from tip overs to stack of boxes to giant storybook to cat's cage - but never a modern cabinet. Rick |
