Hi everybody,
I know this topic has been somewhat discussed previously, but I couldn't find the answer I am looking for. Within a few months I will be visiting Tokyo once again. I know that you can find Tenyo in Tokyu Hands and in Yodobashi, but are there any (smaller) shops that sell maybe used Tenyo or collectables for a good price? Since I'm a beginner in collecting Tenyo: does there exist some kind of price-list so that I can see if an item is sold too expensive? I noticed that some auctions and some magicshops ask a lot of money for a particular item, and that same item is sold on another website for a normal price. Therefore some kind of priceguide would be extremely helpful for a beginner. Any help with this is appreciated! |

I have been to Japan many many (many!) times and have never found that out-of-the-way place you're looking for that has old Tenyo stock.
First, most magic shops in Japan don't carry Tenyo tricks. They are considered toys, not magic, and there are enough Tenyo counters in department stores that laymen buy them there. Second, space is a premium in Japan: everything, including the shops, are smaller than stores in the US, so they don't have room for old stock. You can find a good selection of Tenyo at Hakuhinkan, a toy shop (five floors!) in the Ginza. Easy to find and get to. Also, the Magic Shop at Tokyo Disneyland is run by Tenyo and has a LOT of stock. |

I think if you send an email to Tenyo via the Official website inquiry form ( at the bottom of the page ), maybe they give you lot of good adress of Tenyo corner shop :

Thanks Stereo and Richard for the good info on this one....I found a lot of shops now, just waiting until we can go to there!
I'm thinking about leaving my clothes in Japan so I can fill my luggage with Tenyo-stuff. I wonder what the customs would say though about all those gifts ... |

My advice: take two suitcases. Put half your clothes in each suitcase. On the way back, put all your clothes in one suitcase and all of your Tenyo in the other.

My advice: take only one suitcase. For your clothes. Ship the rest from Japan by Flying Carpet.

I wouldn't do that: what an American would consider a medium-sized box costs over $150 to ship from Tokyo back to the States! Cheaper to take a second suitcase ... and flying carpets sometimes fall.

I have been to Japan for many many times. And I had done what you want to do too.
It just so sad to tell the truth , don't expect you can find any rare tenyo items on the tenyo magic store in japan. The real is just exactly what Richard Kaufman told you above. If you are just beginner of collecting tenyo, you may feel satisfied with collecting those in-stock items in a quite fair prices. To be honest,If you want to obtain those discontinued items, you better seek from Hitomi rather than magic store in japan. I go to Japan every summer holiday , and I do what you want to do later, but I never found any rare items. By the way, I highly recommend you to go to the tenyo store at Isetan (9/F) located in Shinjuku. This one seems the biggest ,except Tokyo Disneyland one. The saleman there is Billy (the second pic You can refer from Stereo) He is the creator of Animation Frame. The most important is that he can speak quite fluent English compare with all the others. You will find this very important later. HAHA Good luck |

Thank you all for the informations. I've been searching a lot by myself this week and indeed, it seems I cannot find such places right away. Even my wife who is native Japanese couldn't find any. Or they don't exist (which seems quite possible since Japanese people don't seem to like used or second-hand things), or they are very well hidden and maybe I would have to sell my soul first....
I'll try to visit some of the stores listed above, and see what I can find over there. Since I'm a beginner in collecting, I think I can still find some good things. If I do find some shop that sells them, I'll sure let you know about it... Thanks again! |
