I've been reading about good books for beginners and I'm stuck between Corinda's 13 Steps To Mentalism and Practical Mental Effects by Theo Anneman. I'd buy both but I can only get them online and they seem to be pretty expensive (I don't like reading off a computer screen which is why I'm not downloading a PDF).
Which would be best to start with? Is there anything else I should be reading, or any DVD's that might be helpful? Thanks! |

I am no expert since I am more in card magic, but have (and enjoyed watching):
Max Maven - VideoMind - Close-Up Mentalism Max Maven - VideoMind - Parlour Mentalism Max Maven - VideoMind - Stage Mentalism (all DVD's) Some Richard Osterlind'd DVDs Easy, basci stuff with a good variety of effects, props and methods. I believ Derren Brown products should be good also And don't forget that, with an appropariate presentation, even some classic card magic could be used in a mentalism act. mlippo |

Annemann: The Life And Times Of A Legend
You can get this on a CD and print it out or buy the book. Besides his effects books, I would think this is essential reading for anyone interested in mentalism.

Get all the DVDs by Richard Osterlind, magic and mentalism is not inexpensive to pursue. If you don't think you cannot afford to learn mentalism then don't start, but if you do, you will make more doing mentalism then that computer you are in front of that was over priced and will not have any potential to make you additional income. |

If the choice is between 13 Steps and Practical Mental Effects (Practical Mental Magic depending on the publication year), Go with 13 Steps. PME/PMM can be purchased at most local bookstores. 13 Steps will get you a solid foundation that you can then apply to the effects in PME/PMM.

First off you will get more advice in the right forum, Penny, start with the sticky and Bob's 39 steps. What do you consider expensive because both books combined are appr. 30$ for essential reading.

Maybe this is moot. dwaefsgrdnf has not returned...but, I'll put my thoughts in anyway...
Myself, I've done magic since the 70's. Never done Mentalism that I know of. Then I discovered Outlaw Effects. Not knowing a thing about Mentalism, I just jumped right in and bought one of their spooky b00k tests. I still know very little about Mentalism in general. However, this gave me a good start and got my feet wet! I'd say, go here, find something you like and go with it! A very unique site: http://www.outlaw-effects.com/store/ Doug |

AS I am more of a visual learner, even though I always have a book in my hand, I enjoy Richard Osterlinds "13 Steps" DVD set. Richard took many of the really good routines from the book and performed them for a pseudo-real (read L&L) audience. Many of the effects looked really good and without Richard spotlighting some of the effects in the book I might have missed reading them.
Its a 6 disk set and it's been out for awhile so the price should be reasonable. S. Patrick |

Hmmm. Thank you Daff'! I think I'll spring for those. I am curious how far I'll go with this. I know one thing...the effect L*n@ made a reputation for me. My whole family is worried. I scared the beJEEPERS out of my sisters. My property managers as well. They really think I'm PSYCHIC! Cripes.
Yeah...I'll check out the Osterlind stuff! Thanks agsin! The "Other" Doug |
