I need some direction regarding where to look for a cylinder & cork as well as suggested sources to review for the effect.
Thanks, Mark |

For the Cylinder you can start here http://www.theambitiouscard.com/category......ylinders
I have somewhere a huge list for resources, I just can't find it at the moment. Off the top of my head I would start with Ramsay's, John Carney has a version, Mike Gallo, Curtis Kam, Roth, Doug Brewer, Dan Watkins, just to name a few. Hope this helps, Joe

There are 5 versions in the New York Coin Magic Seminar DVD series - by Giacomo Bertini (volume 5), Mike Gallo (2 versions, in volume 7 and 8, Marc DeSouza (volume 6), and Jean Emmanuel Francis (volume 16). There are very nice commercial products available. Joe Porper, Thomas Wayne, Todd Lassen, all have put on the market nice versions for sale. Bertini sells one with casino chips, that is very reasonable.

The Farelli book on the trick is okay and it's updated by some notes from his student, Andrew Galloway, in a recent issue of Genii magazine. The back issue should still be available at the geniimagazine site. The guy who got folks talking about the trick painted a cardboard tube bottle and lid silver and used a sliver of a wine cork. He also used well worn coins that could have been found in his cash register. You can find well crafted fine looking cylinders and markers and some gaffs to help with the coinwork in the places listed in the post above.

An absolutely beautiful version of this routine is in DVD "The Magic Of John Ramsay" by Andrew Galloway. Andrew was the only student of Ramsay and teaches the Cylinder and Coins exactly as it was taught to him by Ramsay.

Just posted on a thread asking what we are working on:
"Working on a new cylinder and 6 coins, more casual and showing the first few coins under the "cork" in the cylinder half way through, adding noise each time a coin vanishes and is heard to arrive into the cylinder. The new diabolical stack has been perfectly made by Xavier Belmont as per my requirements. I'm working now on the scripting for the routine to make it casual, keeping the story interesting and the effect remaining a killer (it starts with a paper napkin in a solid sterling silver napking ring)... " Now Tom Stone hasn't been quoted amongst the reliable and valuable sources already indicated and you shouldn't pass him by. Chris Kenner also has some very smart solutions that he didn't publish but you may ask him. Mike Gallo also had a smart version in Siamese Coins. ... and the trick was already in Hocus Pocus Jr with a spring as stack, in Hoffman, in Pinchbeck...!!! Let's keep on working at perfecting it further and giving it meaning.

I love that trick.
Another version to find would be Tim Conover's from his performance at Mullica's. It's a fast-paced and well-executed routine on a hard-to-find video. Unfortunately, Tim is no longer with us to discuss the evolution of his work on the piece. A sad sad and great loss to us all. Bob Kohler does an expert version as well. A fantastic presentation. Doug Brewer has a version on one of his DVDs as well.

Frank, although Tim is no longer around, Eric Mead has learned Tim's routine and it will be one of many written up by Eric in his book of Tom's magic so we will eventually be the real work on Tim's version of the effect,

I look forward to the book on Tim's work. I've seen him about 3 times over the years and his routines are very memorable. He taught some of them at the TAOM once. great thinking.

I learned Tim's approach thru emails with him but a book on his work would be fabulous. I'm so glad Eric is taking that on.
Currently, I think the best media for this routine is written up in Carney's book "Carneycopia" (starting on page 50, I believe). It really gets into the thinking behind the trick and how important misdirection is, and how to use it. Surpasses his DVD, as well. Learning the trick, the way he does it, is essential before you start going to the dark side with ]s and the like. Otherwise, IMO, you kinda miss the whole point that the trick is famous for: A graduate course in misdirection. From what I can tell by watching the new gun slingers at the conventions is.. They rely on their gaffs and speed instead of misdirection and timing, and as a result, they flash ..... A LOT. They're fast and flashy flashers, but flashing nonetheless. In contrast, if you see Carney at a lecture, he does nothing. Stuff just disappears.

I love watching Carney perform it. Your right, he holds up the coins and they vanish.

I love every seconds of John Carney's performance and agree totally on the nice comments made about him and his magic.
I also agree that C&C should be considered as way towards masterpiece at misdirection (even if there is a stack in most versions of the effect) Loved the comment about the flashy flashers....

Just a note here that Todd Lassen has revitalized this effect with a new set of coins and cylinders which have exceptional subtle and valuable action. Available from Todd in half and full Morgan dollars. I have both and they are works of art!
