Guys,
It is time to look at an old time magic convention again that is still fun and not outrageous money to go to leaving more money for the important things....magic. This year will be the 22nd year for the Battle of Magicians in Canton, Ohio. Top flight acts and lectures and shows that rival any national convention will gather in Canton on May 2-4, 2013 This year Fielding West ( I hope you have been reading his advice in Magic Magazine) will be lecturing and performing. Joe Devlin ( one of the top cruise ship acts in the business) will return with his dynamic illusions for our big headliner show at the Palace Theater. Marty Hahne (Dazzling Magic) will be lecturing and performing with kid show and family oriented magic in mind. Closeup will have British flavor with Chris Payne and Mark Leveridge. Daryl (Mr. Fooler Dooler) will be back to lecture and entertain as only Daryl can do. Nathan Kranzo will bring some new twists and ideas to the table for you. George Saterial will perform his award winning dove act and lecture . And a big special guest, Nick Lewin will present his Billy McComb lecture that has been very rarely seen highlighting his relationship and mentoring from the much loved Billy McComb. There are six super lectures, close-up show, Friday night show, $1601 in stage and closeup contest monies, dealers, a big headliner show in a restored 1927 vaudeville house with lots of real people watching the show (not just magicians who never react or clap!), and big free after show party in the hotel for registrants with a hot buffet. Hotel for the convention is the Canton Courtyard Marriott (yes, you can earn and use your Marriott rewards points) with a shuttle to the Akron Canton Airport (check with the hotel on this one). Rooms are $95 with free (yes, free) parking. Lots of good, reasonable food in the area. Tons of stores close for the wives to go shopping while you watch magic. Registration is still only $95 ( it does go up $10 after April 15th, so mail your taxes and registration before then). Hurry as all seats are reserved for the headliner show. Here is the link for the website..http://www.battleofmagicians.com/convention.php. More details will be coming but mark your calender now for the first weekend in May!

I can't tell you how excited I am to be coming back to the International Battle of Magicians! I missed the last few years--only because I was running my own convention. But now that I am free, it will be great to be back. The Saturday headliner show at the Palace Theater is consistently one of the top magic shows of the year--easily equal or better than the best show you would see at a national convention. And the lineup this year is super strong top to bottom. Wow, Nick Lewin not only performing on the headliner show, but also doing his Billy McComb tribute and cabaret spot. And like Richard says, great stage acts, comedy acts, close up, lectures, contests with BIG prize money, the Hallway of Dealers, Saturday night party--I can't believe how much you get for only $95--the best convention deal around! Hope to see YOU there for a LOT of FUN and wonderful magic! Take a look: http://www.battleofmagicians.com/

I should clarify about the Nick Lewin presentation..He will be doing his Late Night Cabaret Show which is a tribute to Billy...Though I am sure there will be plenty of Billy stories to be heard.
I wonder if Nick knows about the time at the Battle when Billy used a spray paint can to autograph his sport coat and later sold it in an auction. Always fun and crazy times in Canton!

This sounds like a good convention to go to. I might go this year, especially if Fielding West is there!

Word just in... Tim has cleared it with the state of Ohio to relax it's border sanctions and allow Steve Bargatze to come back into Ohio and perform at the Battle this year. Who can forget Steve's memorable post intermission re entrance to the stage via the freight elevator. Sure to be a hit again.
Devlin has been working hard on new twists, turns and tricks, to add to his solid set of of good workable material that keeps him work in the top spots and cruise lines all over the world. Felding West...what can one say? His insight into magic from years as a working professional makes you think and reassess what magic is all about. From the little dives to the biggest stages in the world, Felding has done it all. Come and learn from a true expert in the field. George Saterial has one of the classiest dove acts around. He will also lecture for us. Still a few slots remaining in the closeup and stage contests and a chance to win some of the over $1600 in prize money. And the winning stage contestant will have the opportunity to perform not once but twice on the the historic Palace stage. The Palace theater is a jewel in the entertainment world. Look up the Palace theater in Canton Ohio and see what we are talking about. A restored 1926 vaudeville house that is one of 5 in the whole country that still have the moving cloud projections on the theater ceiling. And with an audience that is usually 80% laymen, it gives a great feel to what a real, live theatrical entertainment should be. The convention hotel has just added more rooms to our convention block as the allotted rooms had sold out. The Canton Marriott was just remodeled two years ago is a great hotel. They provide a shuttle to the nearby Akron Canton (CAK) airport. Free parking, indoor pools and other amenities are included in the $99 a night rate. This a great savings over the normal $179 rate leaving you more money for magic. So if you are looking more fun, more magic and less money out of pocket, check out the 22nd International Battle of Magicians (www.BattleOfMagicians.com). Or call Tim to register now at (330)494-2623. Registration is $95 (Kids under 13 is $55). Rates go up on April 15th.

While you are making out the check to the IRS, save yourself some money and send in your reservation for the Battle of Magicians before the rates go up on April 15th.

Tim Deremer just called with a couple of quick notes...
It's hard to believe we'll be seeing you in just two weeks! Registrations continue coming in and have surpassed last year's! Because of that, we had to ask the hotel to add a THIRD block of rooms! They graciously agreed to honor the special reduced rate for the additional rooms. When you call the Canton Courtyard Marriott to reserve your room, make sure to tell them you are registering for the International Battle of Magicians. If you are quoted a higher rate, call Tim ASAP so he can help get you taken care of! (330) 494-2623 ->> $10.00 can be YOURS if you act quickly! For the past 22 years, we've given the early birds $10.00 off when you register before April 15th. This year, we've got a bit of egg on our face... Our website guy Guido has disappeared. We think he climbed into one of Devlin's illusions and now we can't find him! Why's that matter to you? Well - he was supposed to update the website last Monday to reflect the $10.00 price increase! It'll probably take us a couple of days to find him. So while we search, you can pocket ten bucks because of his screw up! Claim your $10.00 here! http://www.battleofmagicians.com/cgi-bin/arp3/arp3-t.pl?l=5 Look forward to seeing YOU at the Battle - the FUN convention! |

A quick auction was held on the spot just to convince the girl that the jacket did in fact have some value. The girl did not sell it, even after several phone calls received later at home by folks wanting to buy it. Instead, she wore it for many years to various conventions and continued to collect autographs on it from famous magicians such as Jay Marshall, Terry Seabooke, Max Maven and many others. I know this because the little girl is my daughter, now 27, and is a balloon twister (balloonOvations.com). She will not be at the Battle this year as she will be twisting in Maryland that weekend, but I will be attending and I will bring the Jacket. |

I stand corrected again. But it really was a memorable moment in Battle history.

Hi Richard, I was impressed you remembered the event. It was 19 years ago. But it was pretty funny. The whole gag was that they were giving out awards for closeup and they had 1st & 2nd place. They gave the Golden Thumb Tip Award to 1st and were to give the Silver Thumb Tip to 2nd only they had two gold and no silver. So while Billy was stalling, Tim spray painted one of the awards silver, using Billy and his jacket as a backdrop.
Can't wait to show you what the jacket looks like now. Packing this evening, very excited to return to The Battle. Been away too long. |

I will start packing as soon as I finish mowing the lawn. Trying to bring some different stuff this year. Should be a great convention. Registrations are up though still some available. There might even be a spot or two in the contests.

Yes it was a great convention. In addition to the really fun atmosphere, I always leave with tons of great stuff from the lecturs there. They seem to really cater to the workers. Also congrats to Bill Cook for winning the stage competition.

Good ideas on the dealers booth. Loved the atmosphere there. However, MOST of the attendees of the convention DO NOT have deep understanding about magic. Performers booked were a little too old-school, and some acts are weak. Food is a scarce resource if not from local. Competition is biased, people from local magic societies voted for each other, and only their friends. Half of the acts that received an award do not deserve to win an award, but apparently in this convention, the more friends you have, the more likely to win. What is supposed to be a nice system of audience vote turns into something disastrous. Despite from disastrous results of competition and weak acts for gala show, along with ignorant attendees, there are still a few really creative and nice people who really understand what they are doing, and it is a real pleasure to meet those people.
Entertainment: 6 /10 Price-worthy: 7 /10 Booked performers:5 /10 Competition: 2 /10 Dealers booth: 9 /10 Attendees: 7 /10 Overall: 6 /10 |

I do believe this years sat night show was a little weak but the all star show at the hotel was one of the funniest I have seen. I really disagree that the attendees have no knowledge of magic. A lot of these people have been into magic more years than thought and stick to the basics. When they see something good and useable you hear it from the crowd. They love simple and effective. A lot of older 60 and up people that have been coming to the battle for most of the 23 years this has been going on. So sad to see Tim D. health going the way it has. He is such a great guy. Can't wait for next year.

Wow. I've never seen an event rated by the quality of the attendees befor. Not sure how you assess the collective knowledge of a random group of individuals. I have attended a lot of conventions, six in the last ten months, and they all have their own personality based on their strengths. The unique contest structure of this convention is just one of the things that identifies it and sets it apart. I have seen countless contests where the winners were judged on their skills by a panel of experts and I have walked away wondering what they were thinking. Many contest winners couldn't hold an audience without a rope (apologies to Wll Rogers).
Thank heavens conventions are not all the same. Sure there are flaws in an audience vote, but there are plenty of other venues where they employ a panel of judges. If everyone ran their conventions the same, there would be no reason to attend more than one. |

On 2013-05-15 19:05, bstokes wrote: So you cannot tell the difference between an amateur magician who does magic for hobby and a professional magician that really thinks about his shows and structures of the magic? Ofcourse there are very people who are really good at the art and attend the convention, but the convention as whole contains a lot of amateurs who just treats magic as a hobby, and only possess basic knowledge of magic. Contests are supposed to be kept professional. Contest winners win for a reason when judged by professionals. If you actually understand the judging process then you will understand better why they win. Take some time and actually ask around how they judge the contestants. Besides winning a contest means nothing. Does it mean you are better than the rest of the magicians? No. It just means you have one single better act than the others. One act does not reflect the overall skill of a magician. That is why they are called contests. They judge you by how you do in the contests, not others. Who said all conventions are the same? Every convention ofcourse has its own uniqueness. Are you trying to summarize the similarity and difference of conventions just by their way to choose the winners of contests? If you are, then you should really think about it again. Audience votes has its benefits, under one condition, when the members are NOT BIASED. If you already know who to vote even before the contest starts regardless of their skills and how they do in the actual contest, then how are the other people going to win? Audience voting system works on big conventions, because people come from everywhere, and they really enjoy good magic. Local conventions, no. Bring as much family members of yours as possible, and you win the contest, that is how it works. Also, I also mentioned about the strengths of this convention, do not automatically filter out the compliments I give and only question my criticisms. |
