I too was shocked and greatly saddened. I was one of those who began my day reading Clinton's blog as well. If the world were filled with people like him we would have a wonderful world indeed. He helped me much through the Maher course and answering questions etc. I was so looking forward to seeing him be honored at ConVENTion this year. He has left us all a wonderful legacy and Yes a Clinton coin should be minted this year.

I got to meet Clinton and Adelia at my first Venthaven Convention in 2007, but we had written and emailed for years.
He will truly be missed.

Clinton was like a second Dad to me...I was shocked when the fmaily contacted me yesterday about what happened. I did talk with both Joy (one of Clinton's daughters) and Adelia today. They are being very brave and doing the best they can. I will greatly miss our talks..sharing ideas..and just having fun!

My first contact with Clinton and Maher was about the same time as Keith's, around '82 - wow, it's been a loooong time. His daughter posted on the blog about his passing and that the blog will not continue, but I hope they leave it up, maybe just remove the contact info, there's still a lot of good stuff to look at when we are thinking about him and for new people to discover and learn from. While it would be a shocker any time, I think it is more than a shocker, because there was no hint that there was anything that would cause him to pass so suddenly, at least not that most of us were aware of if there was. While he was an inspiration while alive, even his passing is an "inspiration" of sorts for me. It's a reminder that you never know when you're time is going to come, and be totally without warning, could be years from now, or days from now, so being so suddenly reminded of that makes me think I need to "get on the stick" about some things; For a couple years now, I've been wanting to donate Hannibal (my Rick price figure) to the museum. I keep putting it off because I really didn't want to ship him, I wanted to attend the convention and deliver him personally. For some reason or another, I can't seem to get there, and I will admit to a bit of flip-flopping on whether or not I was ready to part with him. I don't want something to happen to me and have Hannibal fall into anyone else's hands, especially the wrong hands (like someone deciding to modify him....aaarrgghh!....), so I'm going to make it a priority to contact Vent Haven and make arrangements to ship him to them soon. Another thing it's got me thinking about is getting things made, completing ideas that have been on a growing list. When I make stuff, if I sell it, I don't get a lot for them usually, but I don't care because I'm just glad to have stuff I make "out there" - my little bit of immortality I guess. I need to start spending as much time in my shop as Clinton did in his. Just some ramblings.... RIP Clinton.

We lost a HUGE friend to all of us, but no one was more "ready to go" than he was!
His family posted some final words on his blog... http://ventdj.blogspot.com/ It is with heavy hearts we inform you that Clinton Detweiler passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on January 22, 2013. His love for ventriloquism and the many ways it allowed him to not just create objects but to connect with people was evident in all that he did. Thank-you for being a part of his life...he enjoyed posting on the blog and trying to help those that had questions. We are so sad that this blog will no longer continue. Please know that if you have an order outstanding with him, we are doing our best to fill those in a timely manner. Please be patient with us. As far as the contest of Darl Bennett's figure, we are closing the contest and returning the figure. We are unable to fulfill this wish. We loved this man, husband, father, grandfather, friend.

Though I never met him, Clinton enriched my life like no other person. I treasure all the correspondance I had with him while taking the School of Ventriloquism course. He is one of the four major influences I had as a teen that helped to shape me as the person I am today. He was an incredible blessing to me. His generousity and kindness are reflected in all of his creations. Thank you, Clinton.

People have been asking me, "What about the ConVENTion and it's theme now that Clinton has passed?". My answer ...nothing changes. We are STILL going to honor the Detweilers and Maher Studios..and we are going to celebrate their lives in an upbeat way, remembering all the good things about them and honor them for their vast contributions to ventriloquism.
I'd love to have Adelia attend but her health won't permit it, and I truly understand that. We will definitely work out something and I will keep you all posted. So PLEASE continue to send in those registrations (they are coming in nicely right now!) so we can have the biggest and best ConVENTion ever. What a great way to honor the Detweilers by having YOU attend!! venthavenconvention.com Mark markwade@kidshowvent.com |

Mark,
It would be super if we could have Adelia linked in on Skype for some of the proceedings. Maybe even have his daughters and his son give a brief testimonial to their Dad. That would make faces leak salt water. Steve |

I took Maher Course, before the millennium edition. Mr. Detweiler one day told me that as far as he knows, I'm the only Indonesian who took Maher Course.
When I went to USA in 2001 and stop by in Boulder, Colorado, I tried to meet Mr Detweiler. But I couldn't meet him, because our schedule didn't allow us. He went to VH ConVENTion, but I only went to Vegas Festival & I-Fest. When I went to USA again in 2011, and went to VH ConVENTion, I hope that I could meet him, but he didn't go to the ConVENTion. Even I couldn't meet him personally, we have several corespondent by email. And before his blog active, I always waited his Newsy Vent by snail mail. Rest in peace Mr. Detweiler! And may God give strength to all family member! |

I just returned from Clinton Detweiler's Memorial service in Denver and I was very pleased and elated at the entire event. Although it was a sad day to say goodbye to our good friend Clinton, it was heartwarming to watch and listen to family and friends stand and give funny yet meaningful accounts of their relationship with him.
I was honored by the family to come forward and say a few words about Clinton and to represent the ventriloquist community. I felt our part went well, as well as all the others who participated. My good vent friends Dale Brown, Jim Barber, Dale and Liz VonSeggen, David Pendleton, Ed and daughter Meghan Casey and other local vents were in attendance and helped me represent all of you. Clinton was loved by thousands and it certainly showed by the standing room only crowd who gathered at their community church. He definitely was "Mr. Ventriloquism", as I pointed out in my talk and we can only hope to emulate what he did and what he meant to all of us in (and out) of ventriloquism!! It's still hard to accept.
Those of you who use firefox know that it has a bookmarks toolbar - his blog was one of the sites I have in that toolbar, and still can't bring myself to delete it.
