Hi all,
Jamie Doyle posted a wonderful thread asking for suggestions for effects that can be taught in a gospel magic setting. A few months ago, someone else posted a question asking how to adapt card effects to a gospel presentation. This got me thinking - which my sisters and brothers is a dangerous thing!! So here is an idea: Why don't we create a resource here that would take an effect and offer some presentational ideas? Let's face it, whether you are doing secualr magic or you are a gospel magician, original presentation ideas are always a boon to the performer. Many of the posts I do read here ask about presentation. So, why not have a source where the community can contribute and trade ideas? I should point out that I am not a gospel magician, but, I AM a Christian and so we do have commonality there. So for instance, a presentational idea for the classic You Do As I Do could be centered on how we are created in God's own Image. Or the same effect could be presented as a means of explaining how sin hurts not only others but ourselves because our sins mirror the dark in our souls that can be illuminated by our Lord. Bear in mind dudes and dudettes that I am merely brainstorming here. What I would suggest is that since we have folks here from so many "denominations" of Christianity that we try to keep church specific dogma out of it. Maybe a good starting point is to look at the tenets of the Nicene, Athanasian, or Apostle's Creed and go from there! In addition, those who subscribe to sola scriptura could obviously study the gospels for messages and those who subscribe to Holy Tradition could consult the gospels and the Fathers for guidance. Actually, the Fathers and the Gospels line up PERFECTLY. So, what say you? What have we to lose? +In Christ, Vlad |

Recently I performed John Archer's Soundbox (a seven keys to Baldpate) routine as part of a kids presentation to a church congregation. I used an adult volunteer. It had the kids gripped and the adult audience laughing hard. John Archer is a brilliant comedian. Anyway, I used this trick to lead to the following message which I think can actually flow on from any cut/torn and restored or magician in trouble type trick:
"Have you noticed with tricks that everything ends up OK, everything turns out alright in the end. Recently I came across something that the Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Rome. Romans 8:28 says "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.' It almost sounds like Paul is saying, 'Don't worry, God will make everything alright." But what does alright look like? Well, in the very next sentence Paul explains what he means. God takes all the good and bad things in our life to make us more like Jesus. (At this point I asked the kids to tell me what they thought being more like Jesus meant). If being more like Jesus meant that we looked out for each other, we cared for each other, we looked after the poor, we prayed for the sick and saw more people healed, we spent more time talking to God, and then at the end of it all we spent forever in heaven with God then it doesn't get more alright than that!" I did elaborate a little but that was the key message. John |

Vlad,
I feel compelled to reply since my name is mentioned Perhaps, for focus purposes, we could name a standard effect/trick/routine each week or month and have everyone contribute some application/message ideas. I have done this in "reverse" the past when I have been studying a specific passage that I wanted to illustrate - I posed the question here (you could probably look through old threads and see the different inquiries I've made) and got some great responses and ideas. For instance: I asked about how would one illustrate being a light in a sinful world. I got many responses and ideas for effects that use light. I like what you're saying - start with an effect and create a compendium of sorts. |

Hi Jamie,
Excellent idea! It hadn't occurred at all to me to think in more focused terms - I am one of those pesky "big picture" people. I will put the proverbial thinking cap on and I hope others will too. Two things actually prompted me to start this thread: A lot of the threads I read in this section are concerned with presentation. I wish that was the case in other sections, but, c'set la vie. Also, Hideo Kato's superb Today's Finding in Secret Sessions has been a wonderful exploration of card magic. I sort of took off with two other threads in Secret Sessions called Book Gems and Classic Periodicals. (Come say hi everyone!). Anyhow, considering that gospel magicians need rather special presentational ideas because you are conveying lessons through your magic, I thought that this thread could serve an ancillary function as well as a repository of ideas. Again, I really love the idea of picking an effect or a theme and discussing it! Thanks Jamie |

I had a thought about how an effect like McCombical deck (or one of the off-shoots like Baxts' cereal boxes etc) might be used to illustrate freewill vs. pre-destination. Or how, as a believer/follower of Christ, our path will inevitably (no matter how winding it may get, etc.) bring us to God. If anyone wants to give it a little thought, I think you will see how this could be worked out. I will get back when I have had more time to focus on the idea.

I'm really bummed out about the smaller openings on cans of coke. I used to really love performing the quarter thru soda can effect from Wayne Houchin. I will attempt to attach or add my somewhat sketchy gospel presentation that I developed for use with (in the appropriate situations)... This is a portion of what I wrote up a few years ago...
I know I need to refine and work with it some more but I will lay out what I got so far (I performed it this way last night at a men's mission and it went over very good). So introduce the effect however you wish, you show the can, and ask someone's assistance to sign both sides of a quarter. I remark how coke is my favorite soda, which it is, then I ask the audience if they remember the slogan "It's the real thing", right?! Now for me I guess it is, since I am a fan of coke but then I say something like "Let's try something different, let's say the real thing is God and this coin is us or you (whoever signed the quarter). Now you want to get to God but you can't because there is a barrier between you and He and your completely sealed off from getting to God (poke the quarter against the can in several places) This barrier that we have is the barrier created by our sin... But thankfully God provided a way by sending His Son here for us. Jesus left heaven (this is where I get in the get ready position to slam in the quarter, then perform that action and display empty hand) then I emphasize by saying He left the right hand of the Father (now I display my empty right hand) then continue by saying He came and died, offering His life to pay for all of our sins and by doing so removed the barrier between us and God (bring quarter to top of can and produce the sound) Just as the coin has mysteriously gotten through the aluminum barrier (open can and begin pouring out the soda in a clear glass or mug until empty) we can now come to God because He has removed the barrier! I think I have one or two old cans with the original sized opening but then that's it Glen

I'm thinking about taking the packet effect "Double Back" to the stage, using two volunteers... Allow me to explain my idea and let me know what you think...
After doing the moves and "placing a five" in each of the volunteers hand (asking them to place their other hand over it securely and not peeking) explain how the number cards (or spot cards) represent our sins, etc. Show everyone that I am holding the face cards then explain how the face cards happen to be kings. Now the true King of Kings and Lord of Lords has made a way for our sins to be forgiven which invollves Him substituting Himself as payment for our sins... Do the moves, show how He has removed our spots (or sins) and sacrificed/sustituted Himself in their place. Show that I have the spot cards now and have them now look at their cards then show them to the first few rows etc I don't know for sure but I think this could work really well in a parlor or srage setting (within limits) and be a good effect to illustrate the substitutionary work of our Lord (not to mention a good strong effect being used in a new way). Thoughts/suggestions? Glen

Hi Glen,
Excellent presentation!! As a possible solution for your can difficulty, get a copy of Larry Jennings on Card and Coin Handling. Look for the Coin in Beer Can. I think you will find it a viable solution. |

Here's an idea I've been kicking around in my head lately. This would be aimed at youth/kids and encouraging them to share the gospel with their friends. Not fully worked out yet, but I've been wanting to share it with my friends here at the Café and see what you could add or if you liked the idea.
Color Changing shoelaces by David Ginn Display the yellow lace and talk about how sometimes we're afraid to share the gospel because of what others might think of us. We want others to like us and we get afraid of what they may say about us or that they won't want to be our friend. Yellow represents fear. People used to say if you were scared that you were, "yellow." But if we love God and really love other people, like our friends, we will remember that God gave us the command as His children to GO into all the world and proclaim the good news. So GO represents this green shoelace. When we obey God He gives us a sense of peace and the fear gets smaller and smaller (as the yellow shoelace goes into your hand). Now where does the fear go? Well, sometimes it doesn't really go away completely, we might still be a little scared, but having courage doesn't mean you aren't ever scared anymore- it is doing what is right even though you are afraid. And the right thing to do is obey God and GO (emphasize lace) tell others about Jesus dying on the cross for them and how His shed blood paid the price for all of our sins (pull out red shoelace). This is the most important thing you can ever tell your friends, or anyone; that faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone can save you from going to hell. Because we are all sinners and going to hell until we believe in Jesus. We trust in Him and His sacrifice on the cross and His shed blood that paid for all the sins we've ever committed. And this string represents His blood. And once we trust God through the blood of Christ we find out that we have no more reason to fear- no fear of rejection ever again because God loves us forever, no fear of what people may say or do about us or to us. The presence of His perfect love casts out all fear. Show hand empty and yellow lace is gone. Now , like I said, sometimes you might still get scared, (magically reproduce yellow lace) but we can remember what God said to Joshua, "Be strong and of a good courage for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." So if God is with us we can overcome our fear- show yellow lace. We can GO and tell them about Jesus- show green lace. And we can tell them about His sacrifice for our sins and the shedding of His precious blood on the cross- red lace.

Hi Preston, sounds good and well thought out. Have you performed it in this manner yet? Just curious.

It sounds like a winner to me! Nice presentation of the magic illustrating the message. It looks like a perfect combination of both, the magic is not overpowering the message. Mark

Thanks Mark. That's really kind of you to say.
I must say the idea just "came" to me so I'm pretty sure I can't take the credit for it if you know what I mean. I'm hoping to perform it sometime soon. I'll let you guys know how it goes. If you perform it let me know how it goes for you God is good!
