I also remember when the time didn’t show up on TV. I suspected that they didn’t want people to realize how long they were spending in front of the TV.

Same reason why there are no clocks in Vegas casinos.

As a kid, I also seem to recall a number you could dial, then hang up, and seconds later —presto! — your phone would RING!

Haha, I remember that now! I wonder why the phone system was set up to do this. Perhaps so you could test your phone's function?

A number just popped into my head. Was the callback number 440-441?

Really testing my memory, here, haha! I seem to remember there being a 4-digit number, like 4011 or 4411...or maybe 1411. Actually, this list seems most familiar to me.

EDIT: just tried 1411 and got "Welcome to directory assistance..." !!! I remember years (decades!) ago calling, "Yes, do you have a number for XYZ Business?"
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Google will get you your local number.
While you're doing that that, look in the lower right corner to get internet time to set your watch.
One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.

Are you just now finding that out? Smile

In 1978 there was no such thing as three-way calling. Except there was a way to fake it. My friends and I loved to do that... Call two people at random (sometimes we knew them other times not) and let them argue about who called who and what do they want. ( give me a break I was 16) Today I occasionally see DJs on the radio do that one to people.

When I moved back to Rhode Island in... '67, I think. Channel 6 (ABC) had a time/temperature service in the station identification screen.

In the 80's in high school we found out that if you called from a payphone and hung up within 10 seconds of it being answered, you got your money back. That led to a lot of "HeymomI'mdonewithpracticecomepickmeup" calls
