David Straitjacket's triumphant return brings up an interesting question. What specific injuries do we have that have been caused specifically by escapes? ALso how to protect from them while still giving the audience their money's worth.
I had quite a few more injuries from my brief period as a pro-wrestling referee than I ever had as an EA. Having a cane broken over my back (it was sawed halfway through, but still hurt like hell and gave me one hell of a bruise. Getting kicked in the head several times, getting a sandwich from two charging six footer wrestlers. Getting choked with a strap etc. A referee's life is not always a happy one. As for escapes, most of my issues come from handcuffs. I do have some mild (thankfully) nerve damage from cuffs on the writs and fighting against them. I once experienced a bruised bone from a too tight handcuff. That one took a few weeks to heal up right. Also, I whole-heartedly admit that I don't do much dangerous escape work. Years ago I remember Clyde talking about nerve damage as well. Any other thoughts?

Cuts, abrasions, burns, pulled and torn muscles. Probably lost a few brain cells, too!

Cliff, I'll write something up for you as requested, give me a few days. As far as the pro wrestling stuff goes, Kayfabe!
Harley, how have you gotten off so lightly? Perhaps I need to take one of your classes, or maybe I should have thought about that a couple of years ago. Lets do one together in the UK.

That would be interesting, David! I've broken a few bones, too...just not from escapes.

"snake bite" on my wrist from the bow catching skin with handcuffs. (can I get a Skippy badge for that)
Nearly drowned in a 44 gallon drum but that didn't leave any marks for show and tell.

Ah, that makes sense Harley. I figured you'd have more than you listed! To be fair a lot of my injuries haven't come from escapes either. As for a sideshow and escapology course in the UK. It might well be worth looking at properly. There is likely to be a lot of demand for it over here. Hopefully enough to make it worth the trip.
Most have mine haven't left much to show on the outside either Ian. Probably for the best.

Shattered pelvis from drunk blank-hole making a left turn into my car while I had the green light. I did an escape, seeing how the driver door was crushed shut.... popped the passenger door open, unbuckled the seat belt, shimmed out of cuffs, took off straightjacket, all while underwater in a flaming Pinto. Just kidding, the Pinto was not in flames, although it DID have flames painted on it, so flaming Pinto it is!

If you were driving in cuffs and a straitjacket, maybe the other guy wasn't the only one at fault Nipps.

Two leather patches on my arms from the cuff escapes, friction cuts on shoulders from strait jackets, spine got a pick jabbed in it one time when I rolled over mid escape, screwed up my shoulder quite bad one time but that was doing dips in the gym whilst training for an escape, locked two vert in my neck through either escapes or weights and I knocked myself silly back in 2011 on a stage when I fell back and hit my head.
I am a lightweight next to you guys. |

Never been injured in stunts, escapes, illusions, martial arts, or carnival stunts. Worst injury was a sprained knee while sparring as a yellow belt when I started. Other than that, nothing other than bruises minor cuts and scrapes.
I consider real injuries to be something semi permanent, like broken bones, deep wounds, concussion, etc. I don't know if I've just been lucky, but I do have a head like a cement block and very thick, very strong bones. A particular wrist lock now hurts me a lot and it didn't when I was younger. I don't know if that's an injury from doing too many too hard, or if I'm just getting old. Or some combination of the two. A bone in my foot also hurts, don't know if that's from taking one too many falls or again, just getting old. I guess if you combine good luck, caution and a very durable body I've done well.

Bruises, cuts, pulled muscles/rotator cup stiffness, temporary glove sensation (from particularly-difficult handcuff challenge).
