I'm trying to come up with some good effects to use to add interest to when my rock band plays out (we're reasonably talented amateurs playing mostly classic rock covers, and play out infrequently). Obviously in this setting things need to be fairly visual, and I'd like things mostly that just "look magical" rather than trotting out some linking rings or some classic effects - I want magical things to happen but not have it be "oh, now the band is doing magic tricks". I've already asked something similar in the illusions section, but now realizing we don't really want new stuff to cart around and as I said, not wanting it to be really a "magic show". I'm considering working up a guitar levitation, and might use Pure Smoke to do something similar to what Ace Frehley of KISS used to do with the "smoking guitar" thing. Any other suggestions?

So you're not really looking for a Close-Up effect.
I think you should ask in another forum as well. Somewhere more Stand-Up or maybe FX. You could pull a Silk out of the Bass Player's ear. LOL -Mary Mowder |

Any time I've been to a concert and seen magic used, it's been in the context of a very theatrical show. Alice Cooper for instance. If you going to add magic, you need to make sure it makes sense and has a purpose. Otherwise it'll just look out of place.

When Rob Zabrecky had his band, he would ask for someone in the crowd to throw him a condom. Then he'd open the package, and vanish the condom using a TT. Crowd loved it! Perfect trick for a drunken concert crowd.
Good luck!

Those fire from hand gimmicks.
How about a Devil's nail Routine, where you have somone mix up the cups, and as you play the song you smash the cups, and with every smash the music speeds up. Razor blade swallowing Rope thru neck with a Giant Chain, have band members pull the ends. Floating table during a softer, slower song. If you have a camera and a projection screen You could always sync up a nice card routine, (aces in, aces out, Mc Donalds aces, Color chaning deck, Blank deck, new deck order, etc) to some music as a nice inturlde piece. Anyway that is just off the top of my head. But as the others said, make sure the effect fits the song and how you perform, otherwise it will just look stupid.

Be careful of fire effects. There was just a deadly club fire in Brazil in the news. I would suggest airborne glass or vanishing bottle to help push bar sales.

If you're interested in some close-up stuff (some that could be done on a platform situation) Bob Kohler put out two DVDs called Cultural Exchange and Cultural Exchange 2 in which all the tricks have the loud club environment in mind. It's stars Apollo and Shoot Ogawa.

Good point about the club fire. Oh, I meant "Illusioncraft" not "Illusionist".
