I've tried searching Youtube etc... Only came up with "colour changing knives"...
Anyone know of such an Act?

Jay Scott Berry produced swords and knives. These of course were not real, they were of his own special design and he sold them at his displays and lectures at magic conventions. This was after he returned from Europe after many years abroad.

I never heard or read of such an act. Of course I have not traveled the entire world or watched every FISM convention.
The way I see it, it would be very hard to make it surprising to an audience. It is an inanimate object, thus it does nothing to create action and excitement. In most cases, magic productions are with objects that move. That is why, Doves, parasols, oriental hand fans, and the like are produced. The movement of the object helps to create mystery and wonder of the effect, where did that come from type of magic effect. The hardest part would be to make the productions mystifying to the onlookers. In other words, there can not be any rational way that the knives could have been produced from. i.e. a silk can easily hide a knife, so that would be not a good production. Sleight of hand would be out, as if you do any hand movements, then of course the can just say you took out of your coat, pants, pocket, etc. Down through time there as been Knife Throwers at Circuses and Carnivals, not magic, but used knives. Throwing knives at a young lady standing against a board. Abbott's Magic makes the illusionette called, "Knifer", which is a knife through girl illusion. Finally, real knives are band from most public places these days, so it would be hard to travel and perform such an act if you can overcome some of the problems I have mentioned. Many states band knives with a blade over 3 inches long. And they would not be allowed on any public plane, train, or bus. Of course if Pakar Ilusi, is from a distant land, then of course the rules may be a little different where he lives. |

Hi,
In my teens I built an act using daggers and throwing knives. It had a series of productions, vanishes, transformations, etc. In the routine there were things like a knife split, a color changing knife, a knife to rose, a floating knife, a production of 5 knives in a fan, a dove production on knife, a knife to ribbons (which is still in my current dove act), as well as a few other little things. I made special knives that lie flat against each other while stacked, this allowed for multiple productions, vanishes, etc while being able to hold them as, 2 as 1, etc. I hope this doesn't give too much away, as I thought this might be of interest. I hope this helps.

The german magician duo "Junge Junge" are using knifes in their act "Englishman in New York", producing different effects and using them finally in the dagger head chest, but I wouldn't call it a knife act.
Here's their act : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmxAz7X1i5U Oliver. |

I have used a knife as a wand to great advantage -- on a belt sheath in front. This allows for many ditches and steals as well as misdirection.
There is something about a flashing blade that commands attention! Primordial fear" Hope you will cut yourself? Also, C&R can be done with a knife instead of scissors
