Have just purchased a dye tube. It comes with very limited help with its handling. Can anyone recommend a useful resource for work with this prop?

Tarbell course has dye tube handling info. Actually, any good basic text will. You should be able to get a fairly cheap little booklet from a big dealer: Tannen, Hank Lee, Magic Inc, H and R books, called Thru the Dye Tube. It has handling and many ideas.

There are many types of dye tubes, so I don't know what type you purchased. However, you might want to take a look at my Dad's (Harold Rice)monograph, Thru the Dye Tube. For a description look at the Silk King Studios website at www,silkkingmagic.com and click publications. If you have his Encyclopedias of Silk Magic there is quite a bit of information in them as well. Feel free to email me at info@silkkingmagic.com if I may be of further help. I will also send you some instructions if you want the classic Al Baker routine free of charge.

Hi!
I have to laugh, as this thread had made a MESS of my nice condo...why? Digging thru all my stuff to find my dye tubes and booklet By Rice/Van Zandt..."Thru The Dye Tube"... I have all the tubes listed on pg 4 (1974, 4th printing), including Rice's Palmo (new style). The Al Baker one is VERY old, and still works flawlessly... Besides Palmo (the best IMO), the best ones are the Simplex, and the two Johnson tubes (3/4" x 2 1/2", and 1 inch x 2 1/2")... "Thru The Dye Tube" is probably the most valuable book on the subject, and for the price, a MUST-have. Do not pass this by, if you are serious about dye tubes...I could NEVER have done without it. Do not pass "go"...go DIRECTLY to SKS, and buy this book! Keep us posted, Mark! Doug |

One I.B.M. gold cups winner once remarked that anything you hold in your hands that you don't want the audience to see should be painted flat black. Does anyone do this with their dye tubes or does everyone just leave them flesh colored?

All of my dye tubes and Palmo are flesh-colored. They came that way.
I think painting them black might be ok for practicing in front of a mirror (to make sure you can't see it), but I'd NEVER paint my Rice's Palmo (collector's item). Not one flake of paint has chipped off in all these years; looks like brand new. Thesame with Rice's Simplex. SKS has Al Baker tubes in several sizes as well. Also try a hank ball or Stillwell (sp?) Ball. I can't remember the name of the one with the catgut loop. That's REAL pretty in the right hands. Long live Silk Magic! Doug |

Several months ago I purchased a pair of the Camirand dye tubes and I am very happy with them. The diameter is larger in the middle of the tube, and the ends are rolled. They take an 18" silk very well with no concern of it popping out.
I prefer to use the Vernon method of holding the tube and these tubes fit my hands better for that method. I haven't seen the Al Baker tubes, so can't comment on them. Dwight |

Billy McComb has published some information on dye tubes... check out his half dyed silk routine. Also Michael Weber has information in his book "life savers" about dye tubes. But not the standard variety. You can make a dye tube out of anything that's tube shaped and fits your hand, as it's never seen. Cheers.

Hank Lee has produced the Rice Encylopedia of Silk Magic. Just check this 4 Volume set out. Great reference for all silk magic.

I am rather confused about the size of dye tubes. I have been reading over the description of the Baker routine in "The Secret Ways Of Al Baker", previous to this I had thought that the Dye tube was tiny, and could only really hold 2 9" silks. It sounds to me as though there are different sized ones (from what is said above). I am wanting to perform a routine similar to the baker one, and am looking for a tube to use which will hold 3 16" silks, is there a special name for these tubes, and where are they avaiable. The only ones I can find advertised are ones which fit in the hand...

Man dye tubes come in all shapes and sizes. They are easy to custom make from simple cardboard.
But if you want an Al Baker style available in several sizes try Silk King Studio’s. Check them our here: http://www.silkkingmagic.com/Rice's%20D......ubes.htm

Some of the best dye tubes I ever saw to use were made from copper water pipe. Worked great for silkblowing and allowed a much larger silk.

I saw a great dye tube routine at the castle a month or two ago. Can't think of his name, but he was a terrific performer. It ended with a silk dyed half one color and half the other. It was a sucker effect. I'm gonna check my Tarbell for such a routine. Any other suggested routines that sound like that? Thanks.

Tarbell has one where the silk is red and yellow mislabeled on the silks. I printed the special silks up for a chap a few months ago.
The Half dyed hank best known by Billy McComb. There is a Stevens tape and a tape by Tony Hassini that explain it. It is also sold by Abbott's and can be found in the OOP book by Supreme..McComb's Magic. I would go for the book if you can find it. There is a lot of good material. I can make the silks up but you really should have the tape or book to get the fool routine. There are other people that also did version of the half dyed hank...Roger Klause to name one..but I think in Magic it is most associated with the world's biggest leprecan.

Hey Richard. I'm glad to see your website is up and running now. I enjoyed checking it out. The formatting of categories took me by surprise at first. It was like a silk fountain of words, or a font fountain! You have cool stuff. I hope to buy stuff from you when I get some $$!

Camirand Magic Academy has the best dye tube for 18" silks. It was designed by Gary Oulett.
