This month in Empire magazine, Derren Brown is quoted as being "the closest person we have to a Jedi Master." In this article Derren talks about how Jedi mind tricks are possible and gives some rational answers to some out of this world phenomena!
Worth a read. |

Derren Brown is awesome man! Although I totally like both of them, I think Derren is ten times better than David Blaine.

Can you really compare these two? They have their own style and go different ways. The only thing, I see, they have in common is: Both are great and did more than most magicians to promote our art!!!

Sorry about this but what the heck is a 'Jedi Master'...is he a close up or stage worker?

Big article on Derren in the Mail on Sunday magazine. Talks very openly about magic and the 'trick' side of what he does. Mostly about him as a person, no yarn-spinning from him or talking about his 'techniques'. Yet you absolutely buy that he's real. Very good.

Derren Brown is great, his mental tricks work on psychology, no gimmicks.
NOT GIMMICKS.

card shark,
I am sorry, but you are wrong... Yes, Derren is great. I have met his producer more than once and chatted with him. Derren does use gimmicks quite a lot and stooges. Like the one he does with a coin where he can correctly guess which hand it is in 100%. I will not tip the method but it ain't 'muscle reading,' etc. Yes, he does use mental techniques and suggestion BUT with gimmicks thrown in. |

Derren Brown has the stage personality to really carry his type of work. I often marvel at the way he puts it together.

Derren is highly skilled at sleight of hand but his real skill is that of presentation. Most people seem to accept his (sometimes bizarre) explanations without question.

Just saw Return of the Jedi again last night! Man, Alec Guinness with his theatrical skills and quiet charisma, would have made a fantastic magician. Makes me think of Derren in 30 years time!
Point being, Derren has created a wonderful persona that he plays to the hilt. He clearly realizes the importance of acting for the magician. |

Wallace- the term "Jedi Master" refers to the trilogy of "Star Wars." It was a trilogy about a young hero named Luke Skywalker, who meets an old Jedi named "Obi-Wan-Kenobe" (I know I misspelled that) who teaches him the ways of the "force." Using the "force," Luke has the ability to move objects with his mind and defeat the Evil Empire threatening to destroy the forces of good. It was directed by George Lucas. You may have seen the new movies that came out, set before Luke was born.

All good card magicians are Jedi 'cause they all use... (you know it's coming!) THE FORCE!
I couldn't resist. I just couldn't. It was screaming to be done!

Starwars is a futuristic swashbuckler. It
has little green men, and armies of guys wearing plastic "armor" which are slaughtered wholesale in more seens than I can count. Little garbage cans on wheels called "droids" occasionally have to save the day for their foolish human owners who haphazardly dash across the universe committing crime after crime and even (inadvertently) cause the death of billions of people. (the main character's sister does this) The leading character, Luke, is guilty of blatant disregaurd of his guardian's authority, which leads to their deaths, near incest(he makes out with his sister) and fights his father (sword fighting) until he can stand over his father as he breathes his last, then he sets his father's body on fire. At some points luke uses his "powers" to commune with the dead to divine advice. And is even guilty of minor crimes such as hacking government computers via his "droid". His friend, Han is a contraband smuggler by trade, who consorts with other underworld figures, dragging Luke into it. There is a bit of a love triangle between Luke, his sister and Han, but in the end they are all fine with it. Another disgusting thing he does, Luke passes out and his "friend" cuts open and guts a Tauntaun (SW universe equivilant of a horse) and shoves Luke inside the stomache. Maybe someof those Harry Potter haters should look into this because it is 1000 times worse.

Another thing about that series, It is full
of brainwashing sequences. They are very subtle, but they have influenced me to do such things as wait for hours for the premieres, build my own replicas of the props, display the numerous action figures still inside their mint condition backs on my wall, and collect many other forms of geekness. I hate those movies, they are bad for you.

As an American I know that a lot of people in this country overdose on what is bad for them. You could say we're a bit excessive, and there are also several Americans who avoid what is bad for them. As to who Derren is, check out Empire magazine. It's worth a read!

hmmm... I was trying to be extremely
sarcastic. I guess it didn't go over too well. (I don't think there is anything wrong with Starwars, and in fact I think it is some of the best story telling there is) Now I look (and feel) like a jerk.
