I thought the first 12 chapters were very good and more importantly, written and layed out in such a way as to be easily read and understood.
Having said that, with the price of the book then being increased by $44 dollars for shipping to the UK, I would like the chance to buy a watermarked PDF draft copy in e-book / document format. Any chance of that Jamie? (I suspect this will not eb possible!) Charlie |

I took the weekend to read through the first twelve chapters, and to actually do the exercises. This is really well written, easy, and fun to read. As I am trying to cross the bridge into becoming a working magician this is exactly what I was looking for so far. The first twelve chapters feel more like a private lesson than a book. I am really excited about the rest of the book, and I'm looking forward to it.

I also received the first 12 chapters from Jamie. They were definitely the kind of thing I was expecting.
If you've ever read/watched Jamie's excellent Magic Friday column, his various articles for magazines or that he's shared online, or seen his recent TedX talk, you know what kind of thing to expect. I found the layout and formatting to read very smoothly and quickly. It allows for great absorption of material, and doesn't get dull or monotonous. It's plain as day that Jamie is speaking about things he's learned and developed by working in the real world, not things he's simply thought about on the couch for an afternoon. I'm with others in saying that a PDF version of the book, or the worksheets in general, would be a great addition to the publication. But I'm definitely on board to pick up an early copy when I see Jamie at Magic Live in a couple of weeks, and I would encourage others who are interested in learning more about getting work, approaching marketing, interacting with people, etc to check this out. Thanks, guys!!
And I just got the actual proof of the book today, went to the post office, weighed it, and found out shipping is going to be WAAAAY cheaper! Only $11 to North America, and $19 to International!! Hurrah! (I originally thought it was going to be $20 and $44). (Actual proof) (So hot off the presses, it's not even glued yet!) http://magicfriday.blogspot.ca/2013/07/t......opy.html

Charlie, I'm afraid I could never cheat on my first love...
Books. As a writer, and a reader, I've had a love affair with books ever since I was a kid. I remember back when we used to have Encyclopedia Sets- I would turn the pages and wonder at the world that existed far beyond my Canadian wilderness. They gave me hope. The smell, the texture; I loved everything about them- the paper, the sound of the pages turning. As I got older, I would sneak a flashlight under the covers and read comics, novels, and newspapers for as long as I could stay awake. Older still, I would stumble upon Hemmingway, Conrad, and Golding. My life would continually change. Always for the better. And it was because of books and the mysteries they held. We had a used-book store in the town where I grew up- and it was my absolute favourite place to go. I loved looking through the shelves. But my favorite was when I would open a book, and find a note in the margin. Who wrote it? What were they doing at the time? What was outside their window? And that's what I want to happen with The Approach. It's the reason its written the way it is. It's not meant for the shelf. I hope it NEVER goes onto any shelf. I want it to be stuffed into back pockets, tossed into Close-Up cases, read in the middle of the night and put onto the nightstand while everyone dreams of the joy they're going to spread with everything they've learned. You just can't do that with a pdf. I know that's a bit shelfish of me but, for now, I'm sticking to my guns, lol. If I can do a little part in bringing someone back to love a book, I'll take it. My 2 cents, jamie :readingbook:

I read the first 12 chapters a few days ago and have finally found time to respond. Thank you so much Jamie for sharing this with the magic community. I think it was a brilliant idea to release the first twelve chapters so we'd get an idea of what we'd be purchasing, and I'm sure many of us will be purchasing this book.
I have to agree with what those before me have written. I love the content of the book. I'm not a huge fan of the layout, but it doesn't bother me, either. The content is the key, anyway, right? I've been looking for this type of material from different sources, and now you've got it all in one place. I look forward to reading the rest of it! Cheers, Mark |

I can only echo the good comments from the above posters.
This differentiator with this book for me is that it inspires action. It's very easy to read books and then just put them down. Jamie has a very good, engaging and (because he's been there and done it) proven approach which inspires me to actually put the book into practice. Definitely worth a purchase. Get it - be inspired. The sample I received was engagingly written and packed with useful information for its intended audience. Love the way Jamie's humour is incorporated into the page. And the exercises (if followed) are genuinely helpful and should help to uncover things about performance and character you may have otherwise not realised.

I'm over halfway to my sales goal for the Draft version! Hurrah! And I'm going to be having a contest for anyone who picks up this early copy! For every ten spelling/grammar mistakes you find, I'll give you an entry to win any of my products. You can choose! 3 days to go: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......tart=150 And, everyone, thank you SO MUCH for all your help with this project. This is, without question, a group effort and it couldn't have happened without all of you. I hope the book itself pays you back and gets you work for years to come. Your pal, jamie

I am by no means a seasoned performer but for what is worth here is my comment...
The style of writing and structure is perfect. The workbook approch works well (I was dubious as I read that in the introduction). Â The sections are short and punchy and you can feel the excitement Jamie has put into creating it coming through the pages. Some sections provoked an 'I do that' response, which was a good affirmation I am on the right track. Some sections were thought provoking from a 'hmmmm never thought of that' for some to a 'I should be doing that, why they hell arn't I' for others. In short based on the draft chapters it is going to be awesome. |

I received the first 12 chapters yesterday. I sat down last night to read them (I hate reading at night...and usually fall asleep. But the chapters are well written and formatted so reading them was easy).
I am a hobbiest. Have been for about 25 years, off and on. Having read these first chapters, I think this book could help me move into doing paid gigs. I think the chapters offer the two things I need: a realistic plan to go from hobbiest to pro/semi-pro, and confidence. One chapter (chapter 2 - Who Are You?) is something I've never considered. I think even as a hobbiest it would have saved me a lot of money at the magic shop, and helped me develop as a performer much faster than I have. Based on what I read, I'd have no problem believing this book is going to do for its readers what it says it will do. Well done on a great achievement! |

I've only got 40 copies left to sell before Monday night to meet my goal. You'll be a part of this adventure. 4) I'm doing a gig this Saturday for $1500. I've gotten here by doing everything in this book. 5) At only $55, it's only 53 CENTS per chapter. 6) When it wins the Pulitzer (HA!) you can say you have a rare DRAFT copy - Limited Edition - and helped get it made. 7) You will be sent good vibes from me, forever. 8) Math tutors charge $20 an hour, and textbooks cost hundreds. For the price of this book, you'll hopefully formulate a long career (making you multitudes of thousands) with my words to help you along the way. It's like I'm sitting beside you (inside a book).
