I'm working on a kid's show that uses "original" magic props from old time magicians. I'm going to present one trick as if I'm using a prop that was actually used by Houdini. Since I usually develop my own routines, I'm more interested in props, but good routines are welcome, too. The prop can't be a cutesy silk-screened picture of Houdini. I'm thinking more of an actual, old-looking prop, like a pair of handcuffs or a lock.
I know a little about some of the trick locks (gravity and otherwise), but I want one that looks old, rather than new. Since I'm in the brainstorming stage right now, any and all ideas would be appreciated. Thanks! |

What I have done in the past is utilize a card box. Place a blank card, a needle and thread in the box. The needle of course, is a relic from Houdini's original needle trick. It was all I could afford from his estate since I'm a frugal magician.
A volunteer chooses a card and returns it to the deck. When the card box is opened, the needle has "sewn" their card on the blank card. The spirit of the master yet lives! On the other hand if you want beautiful Houdini reproduction pieces you will want to check with Ian McColl. Click Here! |

Ian, there's no need to be shy. Just be yourself. I might be in the need of something too. Don,

Lloyd:
Great idea about being so frugal you could only get a needle from Houdini's estate! Maybe for younger kid shows I could do a trick with an old key that escapes from something. I second the motion to check out Ian's work at Cannongreatescapes web site. |

I don't do old looking stuff, but if I did the Squire would be in the set.
I own Ian's Gravity Cavity and they're going to have pry my cold dead fingers from it in order to get mine.... great work. I always like to end clean.

King Star-
Any chance I could fit one of my nice little guns into one of those Cavity locks? Charlton Heston. |

I don't know about that Mr Heston, better check your state and local laws first. Some lobbying may be required.
