Hi! I've noticed that lots of people perform Duffie's Bedazzled, but does anybody perform the actual Dazzle by Elmsley??
I know it might be too much pain to get so many gaffs, but hey... it's still a hell of a effect. I'm thinking to put it on my performance, so I'm interested if someone performs it, what kind of patter you use?? -Jesse |

How does the effect go?

Someone had the Dazzle sets put together. The problem, for me, is I felt the Elmsley effect went on too long.
Aldo has a quicker version that comes with the cards. |

Tom, what is Aldo's version called?

If I recalled correctly, Duffie's is easier to do in terms of sleights, Dazzle has a pass somewhere in the routine. I could be wrong...
Martini sells another variation, Cervon, that is easier to perform and includes the cards |

Elmsley's method does have a half pass involved. It is certainly and interesting idea and I believe he mentioned doing it continously at conventions (or possibly even trade shows) as sort of a magic related thing/running gag.

Motown, sorry, I had the wrong reference. It's actually Roy Walton's, performed by Aldo called Restless Colors.
Back when the Elmsley books came out I had Gary Plants make me a Dazzle set, just a couple less than a full set. |

I have a question for you "pros". I am just back to doing card tricks for family and friends (I go through cycles) But I have learned a lot more in the last 6 months then the other 60 trips I have made around the sun because I am picking up and learning a lot of slights that I never understood before. One of the most important ones, it seems, is the count named for Mr Elmsley. I watch him doing his Dazzle and he does his move the way I learned it. After I learned it I read where a lot of magicians (even in the training DVDs I bought) profess you should do this from basically the mechanics grip and some even say don't learn it the other way.
My question is,,why is the mechanics grip method considered the way to go, when it is not the way the inventor does it? I can do both ways but I think Mr Elmsley's way seems less "sneaky", like you aren't doing anything but showing cards. I do like the other version someone (TomG ) mentioned by Aldo and it is in my cart as I type. Sorry to hijack this thread. |

The important thing is to do it the way feels most comfortable in your hands. If you are uncomfortable with a particular method, you will unwittingly telegraph that discomfort to your audience, which is NOT a desirable situation. Because when your audience feels ill at ease with your performance, suffice it to say they won't come away with a good feeling from having watched you.
I personally do the Elmsley at my fingertips counting from left to right. I've done it probably a million times, and am ultra comfortable with it and I can do it literally in my sleep. You'll be delighted to find the myriad of uses it has! Not only with cards, but also with bills, too. I know of at least two routines that I've used over the years where money visibly multiplies in my hands, thanks to that ingenius, super versatile count. One even uses gigantic monster size bills done from a stage where the bills are counted vertically not horizontally. Anyway, learning the count well wil be one of the most rewarding investments of your time in magic.
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

But doing it mechanics grip wise it is exactly as you describe, I look a lot more clumsy and it looks like I am up to something. I can do 1,2,3 even 4 cards doing the fingertip way but barely 1 using the mechanics grip. I like the answer, do what is more comfortable. I actually have a DVD set that the person on the DVD says you should never do it the mechanics way. I was just curious if anyone had a real reason fr that (hard to ask a DVD questions!) but your answer is what I was looking for. thanks. And I agree,,never knew how important this one sleight can be. |

I actually have a DVD set that the person on the DVD says you should never do it the mechanics way. Which DVD is this? Alex Elmsley did the count from left hand fingertip grip to right hand Dealer's/Mechanics Grip. However, he keep the packet fairly high in his receiving hand. No matter how good your fingertip to fingertip EC is, you can still be busted when doing it this way as there is less cover at the vital moment. Marty P.S. What makes Dazzle really shine is the humorous patter and Elmsley's keen delivery. |

Marty, you are right about Elmsley's patter, but my promblem is that I don't want to use same patter than he.
To this effect, however, is very hard to think new concept than the original. I'm in love the idea that you can do this as far as you want to with it. |

I will say it was an 9 DVD set on card magic I bought from Penguin in the on sale box. It was like 149 dollars and I got it for 10 or 20. I really wanted it for some of the forcing and slights tutorials as although I have plenty of reference books, I have found putting the books with the pictures in a DVD help. What I was surprised is there are a few really good tricks for my ability there too. To expand,,I learned the count using a book everyone here knows, COUNTS,CUTS,MOVES and Subtlety by Jerry Mentzer. Jerry's explanation teaches this fingertip to finger tip although at the end he mentions some prefer to do this the mechanics grip way. I got really good at it tip to tip,, really good. To the point that you can't really tell what I am doing with the packet tricks I do. Then I discovered by forums and DVDs and discussion that the mechanics grip is the way it should be done and now I am trying to relearn that way but I look sloppy. But I am trying, and isn't that what this is all about?!?! |

PS: when I re-watch Mr Elmsley doing this I see his fingertip to mechanics grip version. That is how I am going to relearn this.

FightOnRon, I think Elmsley's approach is best. But the fingertip to fingertip count does have it's uses. The following thread should help you:
