I've been having a lot of fun with this effect. If you haven't heard about it its a very quick word divination of any word found on the back description of the card box. There's no fishing, no pumping, and its easy to do.
There's a video demo floating around on the net of the effect in action. It's one of those simple effects that I originally thought was just something to fill between two main effects when doing a strolling set. I didn't realize how strong of a reaction it would get in the right context. I'm curious what other think might be going on here. This gets as strong of reaction as having someone think of any word off that top of their head and writing it down. |

The effect is called Description. I'm not sure I'm aloud to post a video as it is a newly marketed effect.
Though I am interested in thoughts to the above. |

Quote: If the promo points are 100% true, then I haven't a clue about what's going on. Two points, though: Unless one is using a dry-erase marker, using this for strolling might not work too well (having to use a new pack or new cello each time). And, I'm wondering why the $10.00 price tag on such a strong effect, with all the advantages mentioned in the promo. I promised myself that I was only buying one new effecty in 2013 - which I already have. If this is as good as it sounds, I might be tempted to break my promise. Anybody have a review for thos one?On 2013-03-02 13:08, Patrick Redford wrote: I'm curious what other think might be going on here. |

Yeah, I have this. I wached the video download and my first impression was that it was a clever and original piece of thinking. I have played with it for a few days now, and my thoughts haven't really changed. You will need to work with the handling a little bit.
It is difficult to be specific, as I don't want to reveal anything, but I will say that trim and junctions can sometimes be a problem, so you need to be sure which way you should be going (I think that is sufficiently vague). But don't be put off by any of that - it is all manageable. You will want to note that you may have problems performing this with an older (or indeed future) version of the Bicycle deck boxes, so you may want to stock up on them if you like what you can do. This is, in my opinion, a great method of introducing a deck of cards into a set in a natural way and without raising any red flags in the minds of your audience. Let me also state that I am completely objective here and that Patrick and I are not friends (he has repeatedly been very clear to me about that point ). Honestly, this is worth the ten dollars and if you use cards or want to find a way to introduce them in your set in a way that emphasizes that you are a mind reader, this is for you - but it will take some practice. You can do this with one deck and repeat it pretty quick. You don't need dry erase. You won't need a new deck for each performance. It's worth the 10 clams.

I'm confused why this was moved as I didn't start this thread to be a review thread but rather a discussion (see first posting).

When you say "what might be going on here" would you be referring to why the reactions are so good or how we think the effect could be accomplished?
I'm taking it to be the former the reactions ... or is the latter. Perhaps the cleanness of it, no writing down, no overt fishing. I guess also there is a nice kind of visualness and off-handed approach to it rather then a procedural approach. Fewer commands and instructions carried ... write XXXX, fold it back up, ok hand it.... Just look, think ... in the same way an SW is to the point. But I haven't got it try it, so just assuming...

Patrick,
Perhaps it's the incidental feel of the effect. Within the context of strolling, one would expect a deck of cards to be around. And also that the cards are used in such a way that's not expected ("...pick a card..."), I think adds to its charm. It's also very simple and direct I suppose. Am very tempted to pick this up! ~ Nique

I have this. Very clever, Mr Redford.... and at $10, I'm not sure how anyone can be 'on the fence' about it.
I have paid 3 times the amount for one effect... that I don't like nearly half as much as I do this one. Nice work. |

Hi, I'm interested in the bonus ideas. Do these also require a deck?
Thanks, Ray |

No, one deck should last you a very long time. And, yes, the bonus ideas require a box (not a deck) but they can be used with the same box as you normally use.
The whole thing is really fairly clever and subtle. As far as Patrick's question regarding response, I personally feel that the reaction that you get is down to the juxtaposition created between a person's expectations when you introduce a deck of cards and what you actually perform using the deck. When you put the marker down and the prediction visibly cannot be altered, you have a strong element of implied control over your subject that is hard to top. I am using this more and more in a casual setting, and follow with 'The Crusade' (A Mind Reader's ACAAN) and the effect is positively electric. As I said earlier, this is an excellent method of introducing cards in a natural way that places emphasis on the fact that you are a mind reader, and not a sleight of hand artist. Best, Atlas |

Just thought I'd chime back in with a answers to the few of the questions. First thanks to Atlas for coming in an answering questions before I could come back and do so.
While it's possible to use a dry erase marker for this effect quite effectively, it's unnecessary. This is a very easy effect to do walk around. As for Dixon's Extra! Extra! These are very different effects in both method and application. Dixon's effect uses the guarantee card and brilliantly uses it in an incidental manor rather than making it seem like a planned effect. For the 50/50 predictions I would highly recommend using a dry erase marker as then the effect may be repeatable more easily. And yes it does use the card box as a writing surface. |
