A little help please.
May I ask? Could you recommend a good joke book or two? Preferably no "very blue" material, suggestive okay. And preferably "one-liners" or quick step up and pay offs. Also a book divided by subject (men, golfers, chefs, cars, etc.) The books (jokes) do not have to be about magic or magicians. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks! |

I would just google it. Most standard lines are easily found on the internet. For example, I typed "Suggestive golf one liners" into a google search and it came up with a number of websites like this one.

I have been performing a comedy magic act fo 30 years and find most joke books, to be useless. They tend to be terribly old fashioned because comedy is constantly changing, and you have to stay topical. Somebody bought me a book of 5000 one liners when I was in Hospital. I read it cover to cover and got 3 or 4 one liners that I could actually use.
Watch the top comedy performers and you will see they are topical.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=44 There is also two volumes of the Milton Berle files available on Amazon, real cheap. Also the Orben books are still available with material that can be rewritten. I bought my first one in the forties and still have it. Read the Tommy Cooper bio and how he came up with material, he also has gag book, mostly Orben stuff. In the early days, Billboard and Variety magazines had classifieds for comedy writers and material that could be had for a song.
Et tu, Spartacus?

Magic's own Michael Close put out one of my favorite joke books ever--well worth it: http://www.michaelclose.com/joke-book

Robert Orben, yes I know his stuff is old but for today's audience it's new. I would use his stuff and any joke book sparingly, let your personality shine. Also learn to listen, your audience will give you great material, record your shows when you can.

I have a magic database program with almost 700 jokes. Most are one liners some are short jokes. The database can be sorted by subject, or even just by any key word. For example you can look for all joes that have the word waitress and it will find them. It uses the free program "evernote". With evernote you can have all types of information stored. My database invitation is $15.00 for life. I occasionally add new jokes. When I started it had around 400. Many of the jokes I have either heard or known. Some are groonerswhile others are gems. All the jokes are basically public domain ones.
