Hey guys!
My name's Andrew. I've been absolutely amazed by magic ever since I was in kindergarten, and decided to take up magic when I was in grade 6. That was 7 years ago, and I did not go very far, at all. I learned a couple of sloppy card tricks, and how to use an invisible deck before giving up the hobby. Now, I'm a first year student at the university of Waterloo, and magic fills the half of my waking day that is not spent dealing with school. Right now, I'm practicing very traditional things... Cups and Balls, Sponge balls, Linking rings. My long term goal is to become a professional stage magician, (not illusionist. Maybe illusionist, if I make enough money off of being a magician... haha... unless you guys know of any nice, inexpensive, beginner illusions... ) While I do enjoy card magic and coin magic, I feel like they aren't very ideal for performing on stage, but for any sort of table hopping or random street magic, cards are lots of fun. My favourite effects include biddle trick, chicago opener, three card monte... If I were to ever perform on stage, I might use the six card repeat and the chicago opener as card effects, maybe to open. But right now, I'm trying to polish up my cups and balls and linking rings routine, as well as create an interesting sponge ball routine. If you guys have any recommendations as to what sort of effects I should look into or ideas for my first stage performance, that would be wonderful. Also, if anyone knows of any sort of mentors on this forum, I would appreciate that very much, because I have many questions about the details of how to build a routine. Anyway, I've been lurking around this forum for a while, so I'm looking forward to finally be able to communicate with you guys! |

FIRST! GET AN EDUCATION! FINISH COLLEGE! A successful professional magician, needs to be a businessman. He also needs to be a communicator. Tricks are just the TOOLS we use to ENTERTAIN an audience.
SHOW BUSINESS is spelled $how Bu$$ine$$ --and if can't grasp that, forget about being a PROFESSIONAL. READ READ READ FUNDAMENTALS PRINGIPLES HISTORY START WITH 'TARBELL' (published in 1928. The "patter" is ARCHAIC. Never mind that! Learn fundamentals, principles, history. Check for used copies. There are 7 volumes (new about $20 per volume. When Karrell Fox died (an extremely successful professional magician) he had sold his entire vast library, EXCEPT for TARBELL, and Rice's Encyclpedia of Silks. After Tarbell, read:; Ken Weber's 'MAXIMUM ENTERTAINMENT" Ken has the "credentials". Find a mentor with experience as a successful performer, who has talent, knowledge AND the wisdom and intelligence NOT TO TEACH YOU, BUT TO H E L P Y O U L E A R N . Is that Waterloo, Iowa? Welcome!

Welcome TranMagic,
As one who never quite got the business end of The Magic Business I whole heartedly agree with Dick. Remember that some of Magic's best and brightest have/had a day job. If Magic is the love of your life it can be a lot of pressure on that relationship to have it be the bread winner and Family support. -Mary Mowder |

Tranmagic,
Welcome my friend! I can connect with your enthusiasm. 150 years ago, I was read to conquer the world with magic. I wanted to be a great stage performer. But thinking practically, what is going to be a better moneymaker: Stage or Table Hopping? If you concentrate mostly on stage, then you have to get regular gigs on stage! That involves music, lighting, booking, equipment etc... Table Hopping or Strolling magic is much more marketable for the average magician. You can be as minimal as you have the talent to back it up, and possible venues vary from passing the hat in a public park, to corporate parties, to restaurants who wants a table hopper, to private parties. Plus, if you are good at the "intimate" magic you perform, ANYTHING can be adapted to a "stage" performance, IF the opportunity presents itself. Hang in there! Not only look at what you WANT but what do paying customers want? Blessings in your journey.
WHAT IF you wake up tomorrow with ONLY the things that you THANK GOD for today?

If I'm looking for advice for improving my card magic, or suggestions for a set for table hopping, where would I go? |
