As John Wayne once said.... You can bring your kids and your grandma to one of my movies and nobody's going to be embarrased by anything.
You can define family values any way you like. DInney likes people to think that kids will not pick up what society considers to be bad habbits (smoking), bad manners (swearing), or bad judgement (stealing, taking drugs, etc.) from watching thier shows. Instead you will see families working together to solve their problems. This is meant to give the message that families ought to stay together and work together. Disney breaking that is not new, but it has become far more baltent in recent years. Now you will find such things as flatulance jokes on disney shows. Oddly, back in the 1970's, I have forgotten what country is was, I think it was a scandinavian country... Refused to show Disney live action movies as parents were often protrayed as the "villians" of the piece.
Magic is like Science,
Both are fun if you do it right! |

As far as I know, John Wayne was a racist and homophobic. I like the idea that 'embarrassment' is bad but shooting and punching people, injuring horses (in stunts) is fine.
I think it's all just smoke screens, it's certainly not real life. I think they worst family values are far more subtle and evil. Mind control or installation of myth based beliefs to make children the same as their parents, generation after generation of the same types and thinking. It inhibits a wider knowledge of everything and set paths for control by guilt and fear. No wonder kids have a hard time of it and have problems as adults. I still cannot get my head around the bad manners and poor attitude of swearing. It seem right to have the keep the poor attitude which makes you swear but fine to change the words so to pretend that one is better than another. When I hear people substitute words eg shoot, freaking, friggin and ass. All I see is another person who is hypocritical and insulting me that I cannot see thru their pretending.

What a load of sloblocks Ian! bear with me....
As you mentioned ass and homophobia in that post I felt a retort using Stephen Fry's word from the Countdown sketch worthy of use. By the way how did you get @ss through the filter? I thought one had to sneak around to get @ss past the filter on here (although some posts smell like they are fresh from one . But actually I agree with you. Curse words are pretty obvious what ever the language and changing them to other words (older and some how 'less offensive' or even another language ) doesn't change how one is using them. Eg on Farscape (a Sci-Fi TV show) they used the word "frell" almost from the start. It was 100% obvious what it meant but as it wasn't the word fcuk so they 'got away with using it'! Interestingly enough this was the only alien word used (other than species names). They had "translator microbes" that managed , pretty much, to translate every other alien word to Emglish but not "frell" to fcuk that it kept as "frell". But I guess the censors were not looking for the 'word' "frell" and didn't realise what it meant? Having agreed with you that it does insult ones intelligence when people substitute other words, I would go so far as saying that a curse work can be useful and they are a good way to convey meaning quickly you ******* ****! Lol see what I did there! I would never truly call you a fumping nely. |

Swear words are the way its taken,,,,remember the Sex Pistols Court case re- mind the slobolocks,,,they won as Olocks was a revered priest in some crazy religion so not an insult to some even if it was to many.

I am not a fan of Disney. Their movies start out by asserting that everyone is wonderful and special and culminate in the idea of murdering the "bad guy" out of revenge by the end of the movie. You see this repeated ad nauseum in every movie. Snow white and the seven dwarves, etc. It's a very entitled worldview and reminds me a lot of US foreign policy.
You're BAD! Now we get to ram you with a ship to murder you. (Little Mermaid), Trample you with a horde (Lion King), thrown onto a cluster of spikes (Beauty and the Beast), Incinerated in flames (hunchback of notre dame). Another fun fact is that usually the protaganist stops short of murdering them, and then shows them mercy. The "bad guy" then takes advantage of the situation, and we are left to feel that showing mercy is stupid, then the protagonist proceeds with murder anyway. Perhaps others enjoy the lesson here: "Some people are just bad and deserve to be murdered by good people." But I would rather have children watching a different form of entertainment.
