Hi there,
I haven't posted here, but have been a member for a long time now. And I just wanted to ask you working magicians for any advice on the best place to start magic and actually get paid for it! - I'm here in the UK if that makes a difference! The type of magic I'm into is not with your traditional stuff, but more the Derren brown / Luke Jeremy type stuff. Stopping your pulse, or using ESP cards; stuff with little or no visible compromise - That kind of stuff. So where would you guys think would be the best place to get employed? I have an interview tommorow with one of Marvin's Magic's branches... but he won't be able to garantee me work, and also, the pay isn't great! One more thing... I'm also a student right now, so this is more of a hobby then a professional thing. Any advice would be appreciated greatly. Thanks. |

I would suggest any type of family restaurant if you were performing the typical type of magic. bu your stuff seems a bit spooky so I am not sure. sorry man.

Saboteur,
I am in the military stationed out here in the UK (near Cambridge). I have spent a little bit of time looking and talking with magicians about restraunt work without much luck. I am not trying to bash the UK (even the local British magicians have validated this) but it seems that the Brits are not as used to tipping as the US or other Industrial European countries. The restraunts are not always willing to pay for entertainment and would prefer you work for tips and/or a meal or two. Most of the Magicians out here have said renting a theater and promoting your own one man type show is the most profitable. Also, childrens shows are seeming to be more and more popular. As far as a venue for the type of magic you are into performing, I am not sure there is much out here (paying that is) unless you focus on the Halloween time frame which is becoming quite celebrated in the UK. Working for Marvins Magic won't allow you to perform the type of magic you want to. They are pretty strict on what you can and can't perform. They want you to only perform what they sell. The good thing about working in that type of environment is you will get the best practice you could possibly ever ask for. Like I said you won't get to practice what you want but the face time will be invaluable. I spent 4 months working at one of those little cart type booths in a mall in Tucson, Arizona before the Holidays and when I finished I was out-performing my peers by leaps and bounds. My performance nature, patter, crowd control, etc. was so much better. I don't think you can ask for more than that from a job. Hope this helps (I tend to ramble) jcigam
